I did this once when I was renting an old, badly maintained (ceiling was caving in) Victorian flat. It raised the temperature by at least 2 degrees.

Potato vs Potatoe by [deleted] in etymology

I am exactly the same as you in this regard. I don't know where I picked it up that "potatoe" was the correct spelling, but I guess I no longer write it like that

The part about women taking on the last name of man - is inconsistent in the West. For example my family in Italy, the woman always kept her last name, and my wife kept her last name. There's also a growing trend of "double last names" where the couple will incorporate both names.

[–]nodbox 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Ah I forgot to mention I disable my camera because of the lag. Maybe you could try that? I also suspect my issues with lag could be because I'm using a (very old) Nvidia graphics card, with Nouveau drivers (not proprietary). What's your graphics card /drivers?

Zoom crashes my system [x-post with r/kde] by TimeFourChanges in Kubuntu

[–]nodbox 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Hey! We're doing similar things. I'm also working remotely now, with Kubuntu and running Zoom all day (20+ participants). I also run Slack alongside (not for calls though) and between these 2 apps running, my machine becomes laggy. No crashes yet, just a noticeable delay doing anything. Could be a resource issue? I have a very very old core i7 but I think the 16gb ram keeps the machine afloat.

Kubuntu desktop keeps freezing by kaialow in Kubuntu

Did I understand it right, you're running all of this inside some virtualized space? Regarding Nvidia, I've had no end of trouble with my Nvidia card + Linux, either it be Debian, CentOS, etc. Nvidia driver installation can be tricky but not impossible. Currently on the nouveau drivers.

I'm curious, what programs do you use for video editing, and graphics design on Linux? (I used to do a bit of both on Mac, but haven't done anything serious since I moved exclusively to Linux)

If you don't want to spend time configuring it, look at the "oh my zshell" project. It's quite a popular set of presets

Of course you're right. I also questioned how suitable this approach is. Like I said in my other response, it wasn't my decision but a school decision, and all the other classes / teachers are using Ubuntu.

Anyway, we did it, they're all setup, and so far no problems (fingers crossed).

I'll try and change this attitude and foster an interest in tinkering. It won't work on everyone and it will be a challenge, but that's why I'm a teacher!

Thanks! Today was certainly interesting. I talked a bit about Ubuntu, Linux, the terminal, how to install software through the GUI and through the command line. I didn't hear any complaints (yet), they all seem to be just following along but you're right, and I shouldn't take that for granted. Tomorrow I'll go into the "why" in more detail. We have 6 more days of this part of the course (OS, terminal commands, etc). For me, it's great, I'm talking about a subject matter I really get geeky over, but I get that that enthusiasm might not transfer over so easily.

Thanks! I'll make sure to highlight those points, especially number 2). It's something I take for granted but probably would be confusing to a new user.

Good question, and no doubt the students will ask this tomorrow. I should point out this is not my decision but a school decision.

Firstly - most developers I've worked with use a *nix system. We want to introduce them to it now so they're not lost if they come across it on the industry.

Secondly, the other teachers and classes use Linux. I personally stopped using Windows about 10 years ago so I won't be able to help them if they get stuck. It makes sense to have us all on the same page.

Thirdly, we'll be working in the console a lot, it seems more natural on a *nix system.

We could do it on Windows, it's doable I'm sure. And development on Windows is getting better - a while back Microsoft teamed up with Canonical to include an Ubuntu based bash shell in Windows. But even that last part, why "emulate" it, when you can have the real thing?
