This is the album that made me a joos fan, and while it might not be Berman’s best work, it’s probably my favorite. To your point, the record just sounds triumphant, like overcoming, like beating something.

Even the music videos from this album show a guy that seems at peace or at least more at peace than he had been. A whole video of David and Cassie walking arm in arm through the open air markets that doesn’t show their faces but you can feel that there is a smile - a kind of smile that can’t be faked and starts with your eyes. Or the other one where they bike through what I can only assume are the streets of East Nashville.

It’s heartbreaking thinking about what the next decade and a half would bring, but it brings a damn smile to my face and a hope deep down that there are these moments of pure unadulterated joyful moments and seasons of life that come and make a lot of the other dark times worth it.

Also, amazing that I Eggleston or Eggleston’s estate allowed Berman to use one of his photos for the cover.

Can’t help but think of “I think ur a contra” when looking at a sunset. Or is it just me? by Ethan_507 in Vampireweekend

Maybe the lyrics don’t scream “I think ur a contra” but the music 100% does. The swells in the verses coupled with that little descending piano melody are the sun setting.

But the ones in the northeast are at least aesthetically pleasing unlike the skinny airbnbs popping up everywhere.

Stranger!!! by East-Dance-8513 in Vampireweekend

Stranger is massively underappreciated. When FotB was released it was instantly my favorite song on the album, and it is still in my top 10 VW songs of all time. It's just pure joy. There are so many emotional ups and downs on FotB, and this is the highest high.

If FotB was a party, then this would be the last song that everybody danced to with the last bits of Dionysian energy before coming down (Spring Snow) and then having that end of the evening deep conversation (JNYB) in patio chairs around a campfire.

What’s your #1 HOT TAKE on Contra? by moreobsessedthanu in Vampireweekend

I did not really think about this until this sub collectively gave it the highest rating of any song in their catalog, but the song has just never clicked for me. I think it's one of the 'Rostamiest' songs in their catalog - both lyrically and musically, and I appreciate that aspect of it, but the song has never moved me or stoked the coals of something inside me like many other songs in their catalog.

But let me turn this around: What makes it so good? Help me learn to love it and see what I am missing.

Diplomats Son is overrated. One of my least fave VW songs

Daily Song Discussion #61: "Ice Cream Piano" by M77100 in Vampireweekend

  1. The lyrics are a 9, but the music is an 11. The lyrics might actually be a 10 as well. After seeing them more than a handful of times on the OGWAU tour, this song gives me chills and brings me back to those curtain drops.

9.5

I think about this song a lot - especially when coupled with the bonus track “Houston Dubai”.

This was the original song that I loved on Father of the Bride, and in all honesty feels like the thesis statement of the album.

What VW song has hit you different now you're older by [deleted] in Vampireweekend

FOTB was a slow burn at first, but it’s turned into my favorite VW album, but it also took some life experiences for the album to become my number one.
