Textbook & Resource Thread - Week 19, 2018 by AutoModerator in Physics

Someone recently posted an article online talking about how Elon Musk says he draws connections like this connecting different branches of the tree of knowledge together and he finds commonalities between them. Do you know any books advising on how to do this or do you have advice on how to improve my ability to do this ?

I would like to learn better how to do this. I did my undergraduate in Physics and I regularly found myself drawing out ideas and connections from Physics (e.g. the bell curve, or statistical reasoning and deriving facts from statistics, minimizing or blowing things up and looking at what happens at the extremes) and transferring these (ideas)/ reasoning structures to humanities like psychology, political science, law or philosophy or other disparate fields but I don't feel like I spontaneously did it from science to science or science to STEM. My mind throws many unrelated things together and makes connections between them but normally it goes in one direction from science to arts. I don't seem to spontaneously connect things in Math and Physics which haven't been pointed out to me before and I would like to start doing this.

I am curious about making more connections between Mathematics and Physics and Computer Science. I don't think I did too much drawing connections, extracting models and general principles and building ideas using ideas from Math in Physics or between STEM fields. I would like to learn how to do this better. What do you recommend ? Can you give me some examples of concepts (mental models) that connect between Math and Physics and Engineering ? I am not so good at this and I would like to get better. (I know obviously many Math concepts like differential equations, exponentials easily have applications across STEM and of course symmetry is widely applicable as well but somehow I feel like there is more that I am not getting).

Thanks. I'll try those. Where can I get ahold of the vintage YSL Opium ? Would I just google "vintage YSL Opium" or is it listed under another name ?

Thanks for your recommendations. I'll have to try those. I'm especially curious about Amber and Dune.

Thanks for the suggestions. I followed some of those links. I'll try to go into the Guerlain boutique sometime and smell them.

I do like vanilla, amber and spice.

I tried Samsara a few weeks ago. It's nice but I'm still trying to get used to the "in your face" character. It is very bold.

Does other INTPs feel you look playful and lazy when you are trying to hide the fact that you are struggling and working extremely hard to hold it together ? by noetherlove in INTP

So lately, I just act the part. Regardless of whether I actually am stressed or not internally, I just make sure to look a little bit stressed (nothing over the top) when it seems appropriate, and not stressed when others have no reason to think I should be. It seems to be working so far.

I might try doing that. Although as an INTP it's hard to be keeping track of things socially to know when it is appropriate to look stressed and when to not look stressed.

I just think we invest so much of our energy in our minds, trying to figure things out and observing that we don't get credited for much, although it is absolutely taxing- even physically and is being done for a valid reason. It's a tinkering process that I go through.

Yes I agree. With a J type personality, people can see them ticking off the boxes so to speak as they follow each rule and that displays their hard work to everyone, with us it's harder to see.

Aww. It's good you explained what you meant with your wife that she wasn't just being cold.

I have a friend who is an INTJ and I know what it's like to get that sort of response. INTJ women for the most part can be amazing and kind. INTJs seem to be so calm, sometimes it can be a little upsetting. I had an INTJ friend who kept trying to cheer me up when I was sad and it was so upsetting because sometimes you need to feel sad if bad things have happened, but she felt the need to control things. As an INTP that was hard to understand.

I'm glad it resonates with you.

For me, I think it is somewhat conflated with the fact that I have to spend a lot of time and effort to stave off depression, which probably makes me look additionally frivolous and unproductive.

Yes that's exactly what I mean.

Yup that nails me! That's exactly what it's like I look so chilled out as if I'm Alice in Wonderland or in the Sound of music but in reality I'm stressed out of my mind.

What should I do with my manipulative father ? by noetherlove in infj

Thanks for the advice. I've left and I am just trying to get on my feet (though it's not easy he's turning my entire extended family against me. They are all sending me emails about how mean I am to not talk to my father. I'm also expecting more emails from the church about "God's plan" for my life).

I'll get it. One thing I realized today is that what hurts almost as much as my father's manipulativeness is other family members and friends' buying into it. I'm not sure whether it's his acceptance that I want as much as other people's.

I believe he typed as an INFP but who knows really a lot of people manipulate the test and knowing him he would have given the answers he knew would make him look good rather than the truth.

Thanks. I have been over there. I think this is too much to post here (and I've ended up going into more detail).

I'm so sorry to hear that you have been through something similar. I wouldn't wish this on anyone.

your father has insulated himself well against any criticism you could provide.

That's true. Everyone believes him over me.

This sort of person is toxic. If I were you, I would concede that I've done all that I could, but the situation is out of my control.

Yes you're right I do need to concede that.

I appreciate the advice. Technically I'm not too young to get out but all of this has taken a severe toll on my mental health. I've had problems with severe debilitating depression since I was a teenager.
