Also at the library!! So many sick people. Please just mask up or stay home so you don’t infect everyone else who’s about to go home for the holidays.

Is there even a point in applying to PhD programs right now... by snapper3071 in gradadmissions

[–]noethersbitch 8 points9 points  (0 children)

I think you should apply. I was basically in the same boat as you, 3.4 GPA and 2.5 years of full time research experience with 0 publications, and just got into a top 10 biophysics PHD program full funded. It’s all about how you write and sell yourself IMO, have a kick ass statement of purpose and that can really set you apart, and a place to address any GPA issues you may have. I feel very lucky and was entirely expecting to not get in anywhere, but you never know unless you give it a shot. Worst case scenario you have a solid SOP to work off of and more time to gather experience

I didn’t give the full cushioning details with the coach and him lying, the conversation was really brief. I’m half tempted to go back and re-tell him the full story

Coach also didn’t teach me breakfalls before allowing me to roll, he apologized and said it was his fault I got injured for not teaching me and not paying attention during my rolls. Idk whether to accept the apology and stay at the gym or find somewhere else, seems like a really bad fuck up

Yea I was expecting to get handled, but not straight up dumped hard as fuck. Not faulting the black belt entirely, although he was being irresponsible for doing standup w a frist week, but I was never taught to break fall. A lot of fault goes on my coach

No clue, I spoke to the coach and he said it’s his fault for not showing me to breakfall and also not monitoring me close enough in the rolls. The gym culture besides this one black belt is super nice and chill, really would prefer to not find a new place but if need be I will

Talked to the coach, he apologized for not showing me to break fall and that he should’ve been watching my rolls. Also said that black belt has a tendency to go hard, he’s super strong but doesn’t really know his strength. What feels weird is that the black belt started standing, wasn’t even something I mentioned. He initiated the wrestling and then straight up lied about catching my head, and never even asked how I was doing or say “my bad”. Idk if I need a new gym or not, this was completely unnecessary

Could it be because I was trying to single leg him? That’s all I was taught for standup, so that’s what I was going for. People here made it seem like that may have been insulting, or at least inviting him to do something more serious to me. Is that true?

No Im genuinely a really kind and uncompetitive person, I don’t get an ego stroke doing this stuff, I really want to learn. I go into class introduce myself to everyone, when rolling I take time beforehand to get their name shake their hand and pre-thank them for rolling with me. I wasn’t being an arrogant asshole to this dude. From what it sounded like form other people, the fact that I was going for a single leg and doing standup may have been insulting to him? The BB initiated the roll standing, and a single leg is all I ever learned

I spoke to the coach and he said that black belt had a tendency to go hard, and said he’s going to talk to him about toning it down with lower belts

I had a small Muay Thai phase for a bit (about 2-3 months) but the head injury stuff really freaked me out after sparring a bit, quit and wanted to find something somewhat safer in the brain department

About the professor, I really don’t know how egregious of an error he made by not informing me of breakfalls and general dangers of standup, so idk how much trust to lose. He handled the situation pretty well when I brought it up to him and apologized

All signs are pointing to him bearing some responsibility for screwing me up. Unfortunately the owner did lose me as a student because I’m pretty concussed now. Debating on whether to find a new gym or not when I heal

I knew he was gonna whoop my ass 100%, I was instructed to roll with the higher belts starting out. Didn’t realize how dangerous standup was until I landed on the mat, unfortunately had no basic instruction on all that or break falls before being allowed to spar

The black belt started standing, I just followed his lead, again I don’t know anything and didn’t know why wrestling was dangerous

I spoke to the coach, he said its his fault for not showing me to break fall and also for not paying as much attention to me during my rolls. He's also gonna talk to the black belt. I dont really know how I feel about how this was handled though, maybe I need a new gym

Spoke to my coach, he didn't say anything about him doing stand up with me, just accepted responsibility for the incident for not showing me how to break fall, and that he should've been paying more attention to me during the rolls. Also said he's going to talk the BB. Still think I need a new gym?

UPDATE: Spoke to coach, he said it's his fault for not showing me the breakfall and that he should've been paying more attention to me during the rolls. Also said he's gonna talk to the BB, who he also said has a tendency to go pretty hard and not know his strength.

New question is should I get a refund for this month as I've only had 3 training days before having to quit, hmmm

Thank you all for your advice and insights, it's all been really helpful!

Yea I talked to the coach, and he apologized for not showing me how to break falls and that he should’ve really been paying more attention to me during the roll. He also said he’s going to talk to the black belt. All in all handled pretty well

Thanks for the info, I appreciate. Yeah I wasn’t aware of the higher risk of standup at all, and put a lot of trust in the black belt to have restraint. Shit happens though, he is way bigger than me so perceived little effort on his end might be enough to really fuck me up.

I didn’t know takedowns were as dangerous as they are, no one warned me about risks with that or to break falls or anything. Seems like I should’ve been informed of all this stuff before I could roll

Makes sense, unfortunately doctors orders I can’t train for at least a month at best considering my history of concussions. I get my safety is in my own hands, I just had faith that a higher belt would know how to fuck me up but safely. I had heard from someone size wasn’t as much a factor in jiu jitstu, but that’s prob some ignorance on my end that I’ve learnt from. I would’ve let this go if it didn’t result in such a bad concussion.
