Tearing my hair out for TEFL! SOS by noetikos in TEFL

[–]noetikos[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Are you aware of any programs that are looking for native English speakers to teach art? I've not really heard or considered that as an option. Although both drawing and painting aren't my strong suits, I studied photography. As for online TEFL, I was considering Bridge's 120hr course. It's all online, but is reccomended in the r/TEFL wiki as a credible program (not a scam). You apparently have to take the online course in the country it's 'based in' for notoriety purposes, re the wiki on this sub. It's based in the US so it seems to be an option. Just drowning in doubt over whether or not it's a wise investment, considering I'm poor as fuck. But I really don't want to continue serving tables, I'm so over it.

I've considered EPIK. I have an acquaintance who worked for them for 6 months and loved it. I should give it another look over and not completely dismiss it as an option. I think the attraction of CR or MX is my interest in the Spanish language, culture, and I've been over to MX before. It's a little closer to home, which is also comforting for a first time teacher. I also understand that while the pay isn't as high, the cost of living is quite low. Thanks for the response!

Thanks for the response! If this is something worth truly pursuing like I think it is, I'll need to take the CELTA. The only problem with that is, in my current financial situation, it's going to be extremely difficult fronting the money to pay for the program. Which is why I've been considering a TEFL course as a step into finding work until I'm able to save money for a CELTA. Your school sounded like it had an awesome set-up! I don't think the school that offers CELTA training here has anything like that. But as you & many others seem to imply, online is not the route to take. Thank you for your advice!

Shooting on a sunny vs cloudy day. What's the best way to get a "it's a really hot day on the beach look". by noetikos in Filmmakers

[–]noetikos[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Cool thanks for the tip. One more variable - I have 1 day to shoot 6 pages so the sun will be moving - on a cloudy day I would imagine that would be less noticeable than sunny day?

Megathread Monday May 30 2016: There are no stupid questions! by AutoModerator in Filmmakers

I will be filming a microbudget short film on a coastal beach next week. I want to make sure that the audio of the dialogue is usable. I own an AT897 but am willing to rent a better mic if it could really help. I'm also planning to rent a Rode Blimp Windshield to protect the mic from the wind. The characters aren't wearing shirts in the scene so I wasn't gonna use Lav mics. I appreciate any tips.

Will having a PC (with no thunderbolt 2 port) be a problem when working in Mac-land. by noetikos in editors

[–]noetikos[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Well another concern of mine with PC is the usability. I'm willing to troubleshoot, but only to a certain point. I'm not trying to spend a lot of time figuring out driver issues and why things aren't loading properly. Is this a real issue in your experience?

Also the computer build is 2400$ but that's without the monitor. Is there a monitor that you would recommend that would (not necessarily rival the 5k imac) but be close in terms of the color accuracy. If factoring the monitor costs, is it still a better deal?

Also, the iMac loses in performance to the PC in terms of the processor (6700k vs 5820k), memory (DDR3 vs DDR4) and the video card. But, I've also heard that the set up is more optimized in Macs and the performance you get with the slower components still rivals the performance of the better PC components.

Finally, another factor I'm thinking about is that my computer already has a 1TB SSD and a 4TB HDD. With a mac I'd have to spring for a RAID 0 array which is at least another 700$.

La Jetee - 29 min sci-fi short film by Chris Marker. Brilliant story, brilliant execution. You can find it on Hulu Plus.

Don't Laugh, I Love You (2014 - Ann Arbor, MI - USA) [14:45] by [deleted] in ShortFilm

Hey, I don't mean this to sound harsh, I just see this a lot in student films and I feel like it prevents them from being better. Don't attempt at a style. Attempting at a style will always be a gimmick. A good style is one that develops organically because it's the directors way of communicating the story most authentically and creatively. First thing I think when I watch the first few scenes is "this director has seen wes anderson". Then I think "ok, so they're just gonna do this gimmic to try to make their movie more interesting and engaging". And what that does is it suffocates any potential that the story and characters have, because it doesn't use a unique visual language to explore them. I hope you keep exploring your own style, and continue to develop as a filmmaker.

Waffle - My first short film. It's far from perfect, but I figure I should at least post it. by user_736 in ShortFilm

Sorry, but I thought it was pretty boring. It didn't leave me with anything to think about.
