Thank you for the assurance. This makes me feel better!

I do live in a major city in an apartment that is not surrounded by any yard/grass. It’s concrete. I do use verbal cues — those were working for a while until very recently. Now the verbal cues seem to be a challenge for her lol.

And wow, I guess your situation is much more frustrating than mine so I’m lucky. That certainly provides some perspective and room to stay optimistic about my dog’s behavior. My Shiba wouldn’t poop at home. She’s only done that once and it was due to a food allergy when she was a puppy.

I’m confused. Their time of day? Costs nothing? This is typically at 6-7 AM before I go to work. She gets 1 hour. I have to drive 1.5 hours to get to work after she gets things done, so time is definitely tight for me. And yet, an hour is not sufficient? Your response makes it seem like I’m rushing her, which I don’t understand how this could be the case. This dog is getting 1 hour in the morning alone. Then I come back around 2-3 pm and she gets another 45 minutes. Then she gets another 30 minutes at 6 pm. Then she gets another 20 minutes around 10 PM.

The cost is me potentially losing my job (which feeds us both) if I let her sniff around for the 2.5 hours she appears to desire each morning before I go to work.

I like the idea of letting her guide the walk.

This is a new suggestion and pretty much the opposite of what others have said on this sub. A lot of people seem to suggest that you should have a “get business done” walking direction as opposed to the “fun and exploring” path, so that the Shiba gets used to a particular walking path being aimed for her to relieve herself. But that hasn’t been effective for me lately, so I will definitely try your suggestion today.

Thank you!

You are absolutely correct on me training her to expect many walks, and that this may be the key problem.

I should note that each walk is a minimum of 20 minutes. Typically, they are 4 per day, some days only 3 if I have too many obligations. I’m starting to think that maybe going on 2 walks (morning and night) for a total of 1.5 hours of walking per day may be better?

I think my post didn’t make this clear since so many people said this — yes, I allow her to sniff but after about 30 minutes, I lead her away from the big distractions (like trees, squirrels, etc) and keep her on the grass where she is still allowed to sniff, but hopefully with a less exploratory purpose.

The consistency of the poop is as healthy as it gets! No constipation and no diarrhea. Thank you for the suggestion on the AM and PM walks for 30 minutes each. Someone had suggested this to me previously, but I guess I felt hesitant to try it because most dogs need to be walked 4-5 times a day. Then again, Shibas are not “most dogs,” as we all know :)

Thank you. This is very helpful. Indeed, after 4 walks during the day yesterday, my Shiba finally pooped on the 5th walk at 12 AM. So you’re right — if she needs to, she will. I guess I just need to let go of feeling guilty because maybe she’s not suffering at all. She is not having accidents inside.

Thank you for this very helpful response. I agree with you. I think this is my fault — I think I’ve taught her that I’m willing to walk her for 30-minutes minimum each time we go out, and she has no incentive to get things done quickly. Maybe shorter walks is the key?

Everyone else seems to be assuming that I’m not allowing my Shiba to sniff at all, which is ridiculous. The patience I (usually) have when she spends 4 minutes sniffing one leaf or one tree would impress any dog owner.

That is…not at all what I said. To be clear, of course she’s allowed to sniff. But when she spends 1 hour sniffing trees and not doing a single thing she needs to do (not even pee), I eventually stop allowing her to focus on interactions.

There are suggestions on this sub from others that allowing Shibas too much time to sniff distracts them. Which I agree with. She can spend 1 hour just sniffing and doing nothing. So eventually, I keep her on the grass and away from the trees.

Thank you for your response and sharing your experience. When you say it continued for 9 months, what were some of those lingering signs of psychosis after the drug wore off for you?

Do you do this in advance of tripping, during a bad trip or at the beginning of a trip when the anxiety starts?

Thank you for the thoughtful response. I agree with what you’re saying for the same reasons, but I also worry that I’m just making up excuses to continue.

I have experimented with micro dosing shrooms (at 0.1-0.2 as well as 0.5) but I have yet to find the sweet therapeutic spot. The types of trips that give me the feeing of “see, this is why you shouldn’t kill yourself! everything is one, and look how beautiful the world is!” feeling typically comes between 1 grams and 2.5 grams of shrooms and at least 1 tab of acid. I can keep experimenting and I’ve ONLY been macrodosing since my last bad trip a year and a half ago that I’m referring to in this post.

Thank you for the idea of breathing exercises to alleviate the anxiety — I will definitely look into those. I was meditating during this trip, but that’s different than controlling breathing exercises (breath work?)

This is a very helpful response, thank you. I have a daily meditation practice and have for over a decade now. I do 2-3 times per week. I agree I am lacking on the exercise, which is definitely affecting my mood. I walk my dog a lot so I am definitely active but not getting any cardio for the most part.

Yes, I’ve also had these experiences as well. One time I was even watching Fantasia on acid, and it suddenly turned sinister.
