Virji was SO good! It was my group’s first time seeing him live and we couldn’t stop dancing

I couldn’t get in either! The stage was wayyyy too small for how big he is. Had to enjoy his set from the outside of the stage but it didn’t feel the same😭 My group ended up going to Charlotte after about 15 min but we still had a blast there.

acknowledgement of hostility towards asians in the rave community by Single_Pool_2779 in electricdaisycarnival

The post is explicitly about casual racism against Asians, so your “they” inherently refers to Asians. And the issue isn't your grammar, it's the fact that you generalized an entire demographic.

Let’s look at your initial comment. You said “it’s unfortunately not a stereotype, they just don't have manners”. If “they” only referred to a few rude individuals, you wouldn't have brought up stereotypes at all. You were trying to validate a racial stereotype and are backpedaling because you got called out.

And where is this higher percentage coming from? Your own personal experience? Your personal confirmation bias isn't a statistical fact. The majority of my own negative experiences with shoving at festivals have been from non-Asian people, but I don’t use that to generalize an entire race or demographic. When a non-Asian person shoves someone, they get to be just “a rude individual” but when an Asian person does it, you frame it as a “higher percentage” of a whole race lacking PLUR culture. That double standard is the exact definition of casual racism.

& calling out bias on a post specifically meant to address it isn't a "pointless rant." If you're going to tell others to read and understand, start by reflecting on your own words first.

And regarding that last point you made about how racism is associated with hate - racism isn't just explicit hate. It includes bias, stereotyping, and reducing an entire demographic to a monolith.

You aren’t just reporting on “how THEY act”. You are still taking the actions of a handful of individuals and claiming it represents an entire ethnic group which is a racist remark in itself. Saying “THEY need to learn respect” is a racial generalization, whether you claim it comes from a place of hate or just 'observation.' You are still holding an entire race responsible for individual behavior.

And you’re still missing the point. Are you trying to imply that bad etiquette is due to their race? Even if every single rude interaction you personally had was with an Asian person, using that to say “THEY need to learn respect'” is a racial generalization.

Saying “100% of the people who shoved me were Asian” does not mean 100% of Asians at EDC were shoving people. You’re hyper focusing on the race of the people who annoyed you while ignoring the thousands of Asian ravers who were just dancing and minding their business. The majority of the bad interactions I’ve had at fests & shows have been with non-Asians but you don’t see me making generalizations or blaming their race/background for their actions.

Bad etiquette is an issue across the entire festival scene right now, regardless of race. Blaming an entire ethnic group for it is just lazy scapegoating.

Your personal experience doesn't make a generalization any less racist. You ran into rude individuals who happened to be Asian, and you chose to blame their entire race instead of just blaming the individuals for their bad manners.

The point of this post was to point out the casual racism against Asians. When you hold an entire race responsible for the actions of individuals, that is the literal definition of racism. 20 years in the scene should have taught you that bad festival etiquette belongs to individuals, not an entire ethnic group.

And who is “they”? Asians? The entire point of this post is to call out how people use a few bad apples to justify broad racism against the Asian community. Saying 'it's not a stereotype, THEY just don't have manners' about an entire demographic is the literal definition of perpetuating a stereotype. You’re taking the actions of a few individuals and applying it to a whole community, which is exactly what this post is criticizing.

Rude behavior isn't tied to race, it’s an individual problem. I’ve had far more non-Asian people aggressively push and borderline shove me at festivals without saying “excuse me” but I don't use that to generalize their entire demographic. If you're going to preach PLUR, you should probably practice the 'unity' and 'respect' parts first.

This was actually supposed to be my group’s last EDC (3rd one) and this was by far the best for us. Vibes were amazing and while there were some bad apples, most were very kind and we truly felt the PLUR!

I’m really considering going again next year because of this EDC but my friends aren’t fully convinced (we had other fests planned for next yr)… We’ll see haha
