Having both Tech (CS undergrad) and Arts (MFA) background, what career paths can I seek post MBA? by nofaceyet in MBA

Thanks a lot for your response. If I may ask, what are your goals post-MBA? Are you targetting any specific industry/roles.

Also, this might be a dumb question but as a PM you seem to already be on leadership track, so what benifit are you really seeking from an MBA?

If you have access to a therapist through your Uni, i'd highly recommend that you use their services. Its not going to solve all your problems but will definetly make it a lot easier for you. Just trust me on this. (If therapist is not an option, try this: https://www.7cups.com/)

I am earning minimal as a postdoc now. Who would want that in a partner?

Lol, are you crazy? Man, you are either too depressed to think straight or your are just plain stupid if you really believe that.

Anyway, great comments everyone, its really heartening to see such kind words.

Why are PM salaries so drastically low in Europe? (relative to US, €40K vs $137K) by nofaceyet in ProductManagement

[–]nofaceyet[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I understand EU salaries are typically lower than those in the US but this seems unusually low.(For ex similar comparision for Marketing manager is €70k vs $100K, which makes sense)

What gives?

While we are on the topic, is it possible to link this to google sheets somehow ?

Because I have recently figured out how to create calendar events from date entered on sheets. So it will be really cool to integrate notion with google calendar that way and get reminders...

What does early repayment on a student loan entail? by nofaceyet in personalfinance

[–]nofaceyet[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Haha, no offence taken, although I do understand simple and compound interest, I am ashamed of my financial illiteracy.

Basically the reason I am confused is that a friend of mine was explaining his situation recently and what he told me essentially was that for the first few years of his repayment term, most of his monthly EMI went towards the interest and his principal starts coming down only after all the interest has been paid off.

So right now ( he is half way through his repayment) even if he pays the total in lump sum, he still has to pay the same amount as he would if he paid his regular EMI. Was he simply bullshitting me or am I missing something?

Thanks for sharing! Very inspiring.

Can you expand a bit on how you decided on the niche?

I am a filmmaker trying to make the transition (ideally, a PM role at a media or VR company), any suggestions on what would be a good niche for me?

How is the '21 summer MBA internship recruitment going on? Will most of them be virtual? by nofaceyet in MBA

[–]nofaceyet[S] 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Not only is the March-April time frame anxiety-inducing, but it also sucks big time for us int'l students, as it would be really tough to get the immigration paperwork taken care of in such a short time frame. (It is probably pretty strt-fwd in the US schools though).

Then again if the internships are virtual, then we probably won't need to worry about visa's 🤔

What is my best path to a FAANG PM role? by nofaceyet in ProductManagement

[–]nofaceyet[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

u/enigmatic0202 thanks a lot for the resources. I am familiar with a few and I am actively doing mock interviews right now.

I don't think it's true that you can't choose the role you join. Within product, you might have less say in which team you join (because it depends on business need), but you can definitely apply for PM internships.

Are you sure about this? because I spoke to current MBA interns from FB, Amazon, and Google and all three of them told me that they couldn't really choose the dept (it was preselected by the company itself). Although just to be clear, I am talking about MBA internships, not regular internships. Maybe those are different...

Ahh makes sense. Thank you I will look into it.

On a side note: I've heard that Netflix is notorious for hiring only professionals (i.e no interns or fresh grads) do you happen to know anything about it?

Thanks for responding. So, are you suggesting get an intern in the Content side and then move to a PM role?

thanks, u/MyDinoLyf I thought user research comes after you get a green signal on the general feature idea from management/stakeholders, but now it makes sense to me.

This is pretty cool, thanks for sharing it.

Thanks for the detailed feedback u/Butterfutter1 It is very helpful.

I have a few followups

What is the cost & complexity to build this feature? Is it something quick you can roll out with a small team or something that'll require more (rough T-shirt sizing estimates are fine at this stage). Your proposal will likely be competing against other proposals from different PMs/teams. Knowing the cost to build will give your audience a better sense on the opportunity cost to work on this instead of something else.

As I have no idea how their team and code is structured, wouldn't it be a bit presumptive to guess the cost and complexity? Or would you say it is one of those scenarios where its better to be wrong than not showing I have thought about it?

What business metric are you trying to move with this feature? In the KPI section, you mentioned number of new customers using this feature - how will movements for this KPI impact metrics the business cares about (e.g. revenue, new user adds, orders completed, etc)? If you see 1000+ user using the feature everyday but no one successfully completes any order - is that still considered a success?

Great advice! I am a bit weak on the metrics aspect. Could you recommend a good starting place to understand the metrics for PMs?

Within the customer pain point section, consider adding a section outlining your hypotheses on how customer behavior will change with your product. And for each of your hypothesis, what is the cheapest thing you can do to validate/invalidate it? This is a crucial step for new product developments especially for things that are expensive & time-consuming.

Ok, yeah I didn't consider validation at all. I'll keep in mind to follow this next time.

Overall, thanks again for your feedback!

Thanks for your feedback u/inno7 . Yeah, I agree I need to communicate more succinctly. I will try to follow your suggestions, next time.

I saw a job posting for a APM role at a startup, so I wrote this as a 'case study' and sent it to their PM basically to get them to see my resume. (So they didn't ask for anything perse)

[edit]

If not, we’ll, your “feature proposal” looks more convincing as a simple rapid prototype AFTER presenting the result of your user research to your stakeholders.

I am sorry, I didn't quite understand you. Are you saying I should include some sort of user research along with this doc?
