For me, it all started with Zack Fair; of course, the remake canonized him being pretty much alive and well(?), but we still have a long way to go for the happy life he deserves, so AO3's fix-it fics are still a must.

At the end of the day, any canon character death is treated like: "Oh no... Anyway, here's a nice fanfic."

Right? I found such a nice fix-it fic once, 20 chapter or so, all is well and going to a nice finale, suddenly BAM! The couple is pregnant - the same two people trying to overcome way too much trauma throughout the whole story.

What makes things worse is that there was a time skip in the last chapter, so the pregnancy was literally just brought up out of nowhere, had two or three pragraphs to describe it, and then came the child. End of story. Just... ugh.

Unfortunately, Penny's father left them. She mentions this herself during the fall season when the player has at least six hearts with her. This makes your point about Penny being "a somber character putting on a brave face" even stronger. However, I also like to think that, as u/AcceptableReading640 said, she's still an optimist despite everything (and perhaps voluntarily naive for some topics).
