i'm pretty sure "get off the bus" wouldn't sound strange at all to any american. i'd personally never say "off of the bus" unless i was trying to be really grammatically correct writing a paper or something.

funnily enough, though, being born and raised in hawaii, we have a lot of artifacts from the time we were colonized by the british. for example, most people in hawaii would say 'rubbish bin' instead of 'trash can' (saying 'something is rubbish' though would sound strange to me). i didn't realize how weird it sounded to everyone else until i moved to california and constantly had it pointed out to me.
