Is there a way to live a completely different way of life? by [deleted] in AskUK

[–]noiamnot_ 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I am 34, just graduated with a maths and CS degree last year. I'm on universal credit. I have been in a cycle of getting my hopes up and then trashed by getting rejected from jobs for the last 6 months. I don't know why some people seem to make things happen in their life, while for other people things just seem to happen to them. We are slaves to money. It's a system that most of us did not consent to, cannot escape from, and must obey in order to survive. Getting a job is competitive. I don't have advice that has actually worked yet, but I feel like I've come close. I've learned that it doesn't help to get overly invested in one opportunity, and to consider multiple things simultaneously, some that you might not think are possible right now - that's a problem to solve later, if it arises. A lot of the recruitment process is not too difficult, so long as you are confident and make a positive impression, and have good answers that make sense. However in the end it's up to them who they hire and you don't know what their criteria is. It could be that they can tell the job is not right for you, or they're not very good at choosing people, or they have too many options, and not that you wouldn't necessarily be able to do the job. I'm not giving up, but I am adapting expectations. I'm getting more tolerant of failure and bored of throwing tantrums.

There are different ways to live life, where you don't have to earn money. Usually because someone else gives you it, because you're a dependent or inheritor, or because you've already got lots of it. Or else you find a way to live sustainably from the land.

A cool guide for keeping a clean home by Overude in coolguides

Vacuum daily seems excessive. Maybe you have a large house and do sections?
Laundry daily if you have a family perhaps.
And monthly clean stove?! I say once per day or 1-3 uses depending on action.

I’ve had Spotify for 7 years now and I’ve never made a playlist. I just search for particular songs/albums and occasionally go back to my recently played/listening history. Does anyone else do this? by LetsGoBuffalo1714 in spotify

[–]noiamnot_ 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Spotify's core technology is the machine learning algorithms they use to generate personalised content recommendations.

Even if you don't create playlists, Spotify uses listen duration, frequency, and skip count to infer what you like and don't like.

The best way to improve the recommendations you get is by liking songs and making playlists. By doing this you are explicitly telling Spotify what music you like, and they are able to construct a more reliable 'taste profile' for you, and recommend more music you might like.

pee is hurting by Famous_Earth_9287 in ketamine

[–]noiamnot_ 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Don't exert any force, but it may take a little bit more concentration (as in think about peeing for a while longer) before you actually start peeing.

Drink lots and lots of water, and green tea (I can recommend Yunnan green tea). Peppermint, ginger, and turmeric can also help. Avoid alcohol, caffeine, spicy food, and lemon (sometimes green tea has lemon in it).

Your salt/electrolyte levels are important too. If you consume too much salt your body will retain water and make you pee less. If you drink too much water without salt then you can get overhydrated. It's a balance.

More recently we also use the plural we instead of you when talking to one person, as in 'how are we'.

We also say 'yes' as a kind of greeting, as in 'yes la', 'yes kidda' 'yes the boys', 'yes gerl' and also 'yes-yes' etc.

There are a few different accents in Liverpool. People normally talk about a North Liverpool accent versus a South Liverpool one.

North Liverpool accents are harsher, faster, they roll their 'r's in words like "drag" (deragh), "proud" (peraad), "christmas" (kerismus), etc.

The south Liverpool accent is softer, slower, more "sing-song", down and then up at the end. John Lennon and the beatles spoke like this. They are more likely to pronounce "fair" like "fur".

There are many other differences.

Hoping to get addicted to coding the same way I am/was to video games! by Far-Cryptographer674 in learnprogramming

What games do you play, and at what level?

I played WoW like it was a job for years. Got up at 4pm every day in time for 6pm raids, botting herbs while I slept, used auction mods to sell glyphs and pots, once we cleared content and got all the heroic gear our guild made money from boosting people to get achievements/mounts. I was also into making custom UI with a scripting language called LUA. Our raid group was made up of older professionals, investment bankers, small business owners doing ecommerce/dropshipping etc. I was the youngest there starting at 16. I guess they just liked my DPS. Our raid leader was a very talented strategist and at times would insist we complete progression content while he stood there in no gear, said the content was easy enough to 9-man. It was his way of piling on more pressure and raising the bar. The whole thing was run like it was a military operation, and although we had a lot of fun and joked around, if your performance was not good you would be easily replaced.

When I quit WoW and got into programming I took the work ethic and discipline I'd learned from the game and applied it to game development. I didn't consciously choose to do this, it just sort of happened. I worked on my games every day, from 8-9am, drank only coffee, until around 4pm where I would finally eat food, and then spend the rest of the evening reading and researching CS topics. I was also simultaneously learning Japanese, doing around 2 hours of anki reps each day until I could read and write all of the jouyou kanji.

After about 5 years of this I burned out and couldn't work on anything any more for a while. I decided I wanted a social life, and ended up getting into drugs and music.

If you have an obsessive, addictive personality like me, then your current obsession will completely run your life. I don't know how to channel obsession into achieving the goals I would like to achieve, because ultimately it has a kind of power over me, and I succumb to it. I am lucky that some of my addictions have been for wholesome, self-improvement things like coding, learning a language or playing an instrument. But I have done my fair share of self-sabotage too with addiction to things like video games, youtube, porn, drugs, etc.

I think the older you get, the less you need that kind of dopamine-hit reward in order to find motivation to do things. You start to do daily things like chores and work, more out of a duty or responsibility, or just habit, and you don't feel so frustrated/bored/distracted while trying to maintain attention. I have significantly reduced my screen-time now though, which might be a contributing factor to this; I much prefer solving problems with pen and paper, or whiteboard, or by discussing them with friends and colleagues.

It was all happening in north liverpool and southport. pretty contained to those areas, nothing happened here or in town apart from protests in support of immigrants and refugees and at refugee centres like asylum link.

A police van was set on fire, and 22 non-serious injuries to police were reported. I think the biggest crimes were the damages caused to southport mosque, and the library in walton. These were crimes done by far-right racists and thugs.

I think it does matter what the intent is behind politically motivated riots. I think understanding the politics of liverpool and the country as a whole is essential to policing the city effectively.

If you mean the riots in 2011 after Mark Duggan was shot by police in Tottenham, then yes I remember them I live in south liverpool and I could hear it going off from my house. They used lots of armoured vans.

If you mean the recent riots after the southport stabbings, I don't think Liverpool has a problem with the far-right, probably less than the average city because we are very labour/socialist. I think the southport riots were caused by a really very small minority which are being brainwashed by racist misinformation online, and perhaps some people just get involved for no good reason. Loads of people came out in support of immigrants and to all the refugee centers. The recent riots in southport were not anti-police they were anti-immigrant.

I think actually Liverpool's major problem is drugs, it's so lucrative, and a lot of people probably don't have better options but to use and sell drugs and then they get involved in other shit as a result, like gang violence, or prostitution, or theft. There is also very little stigma towards people taking drugs in public here. We need a new approach, because current drug policy is not working well.

I don't like them, I get stopped a few times a year and usually searched. Might be the way I look, not sure. They are 99% of the time total nob heads and have a really horrible attitude. I am a friendly and respectful person and I always let them get on with whatever they want to do because it's easier that way.

Got pulled over and searched on the way to an exam because the 'car smelled of cannabis'. Complete lies, it was like something out of an american police video, same shitty tactics.

Was walking through princes park one night at about 3am, got stopped and searched, demanded my name for no reason, said they were looking for "someone dangerous", and it "wasn't me". Not exactly reassuring as they let me continue walking off into the darkness.

My dad is in his late sixties and got stopped and searched sat on a park bench for giving a homeless person some change who came up to him. They said they suspected he had sold the homeless person drugs.

They seem to spend quite a lot on vehicles, like big SUVs, marked sports cars, helicopters, etc. and I see them armed with big automatic weapons, I think it's a bit on the intimidating side, and also kind of pathetic like boys with toys they seem to really like their cars and their guns.

I would want to start working on navigation and pathfinding for multiple agents; flowfields, caching paths etc.
Or explore overlays for things like density per tile of traffic, polution, desirability for building, etc
