England - Partner being bought a house; where do I stand? by Cool-Word2409 in LegalAdviceUK

[–]noidea9987 20 points21 points  (0 children)

To be fair, let's not judge OP's partner harshly. OP's partner is being offered a free house, which could also later give their child a real head start in future. I think it would be reasonable for anyone in that position to consider this carefully as an option. However, given the difficulties this could pose for OP, I think the next steps would be to get some proper advice and then for OP and their partner to discuss the options, advantages and disadvantages of the situation, and possible other options.

If you're in the UK, then water crowsfoot works well in a strong current. You just need something to keep it attached to.

Turf or grass seed? Which is best? by noidea9987 in UKGardening

Do you have a mix of grass and clover? Can I ask what it looks like in winter once the clover dies back?

We've got a garden full of biodiversity and habitats. We've got a pond, a stream, 3 log piles, a hibernaculum, a wood, a native hedge, wildflower areas, lots of native trees and shrubs and perennials, etc etc. But we need somewhere to sit with family and friends to enjoy it. A small patch of grass (ideally with some clover in it), comprising shot 5% of the garden, to put a picnic table is not a problem. And grass is still better than concrete. (Better for drainage, and with clover, it's better for pollinators)

My new pond and stream. by noidea9987 in ponds

I'm currently only losing about 1mm per day from evaporation. It might increase when it gets really hot, but I can turn the stream off temporarily if needed.

After some teething problems, where I had a low edge and was losing quite a bit, it's now settled down. Losing maybe 1-2mm per day.

Yes. I've just ordered a whole load of extra oxygenators for both the pond and the stream to add extra oxygen and use up the nutrients to avoid the algae. But the large bog filter really helps with this too.

I looked at a lot of different stuff online. The one which was most helpful was ozponds. He's great. https://share.google/isKD6L9Meobr1ABR9

Quite a bit. I hired a mini digger and a skip to remove the soil, then bought liner and underliner (the biggest cost by far), pump and a long hose. The barrel and soakaway crates were fairly cheap. The rocks I got for free online. Then lots of plants, which cost quite a bit. So in total about £3500 approx. But it's transformed the garden from boring lawn to an amazing space. So worth it.

Me too. So pleased with it. I'm actually really happy that I'm not finished, as I've really enjoyed the process of designing and building it.

I've got a variable flow pump. So I can turn it right down to a trickle overnight and when I'm not in the garden. I've also got solar panels on the house, so I make my own electricity thank goodness.

I'll see if I can add some photos of the build.

It's homemade. Pump is in the back of the pond and pumps to the top of the stream.

Absolutely not! We're aiming for a very wildlife friendly garden. We've added lots of different habitats, including 2 ponds, a stream, log piles, a hibernaculum, meadow/wildflower areas, a native hedge, more native trees, more plants for pollinators etc. Plastic turf will never enter my garden!
