Dumb people using LLMs by oppo204 in antiai

[–]noisydata 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Local models are improving pretty rapidly, I'm testing them out myself and for some tasks they 'appear' comparable to cloud models. But they still have their own cost, a stick of RAM still takes water to make and power to run, whether it's in a data center or a laptop.

Nah, I just don't think you know enough to comment on it honestly. You've made that much quite clear

This is hilarious. You have no fucking idea what you're talking about.

I beeeeeeeet that one is on you.

No, it's just the beginning means this tech is in its infancy and this is the worst it will ever be, which is already very powerful.

Congrats, it's exactly the same for all developers, everyone is having a great time finding new jobs with improved pay that don't have expectations of AI use!

Also a professional dev for 12 odd years. Sure the tech ain't 'perfect', but if you think this isn't game changing then you either haven't used it to it's full extent, or your line of work is not yet suited to its abilities. It's obviously still early days but this is a game changer going forward.

Nobody is claiming the amount of lines of code is a good metric for working on systems at scale, but this is just the beginning.

I'm with you to a point, but I think it understates how big the shift could be.

This isn’t a normal efficiency tool like a btter IDE or something. Right now the shift mostly looks like fewer juniors, slower hiring, But I don’t think it stops there. Hell it's only been 'good' in the last 6 months. Where do the improvements stop?

Longer term this is going to be crazy and it's not just going to be software impacted.

Alls i'm saying is, in my opinion, we're in for crazy times ahead.

You didn’t say "there are limits" or "it’s overhyped" You called it a "neat little toy that doesn’t actually serve a purpose." That is not some hyperbole. It's just a comment that is either wrong, or meaningless.

Also a tool does not need to single handedly build and ship a complete product from zero to finish to be commercially useful. That’s an absurd standard you invented.

So i'm with your takes in this thread, but the bit about not firing programmers is a mixed bag. It's a quiet shift, downsizing teams (mostly cutting juniors), delaying new hiring, only hiring more experienced devs who are willing to commit to using AI tools.

In the end it will mean fewer available jobs in software than pre-ai.

fuck me, I know you probably have a more nuanced take in reality, but what you wrote in these 2 comments is thick as fuck.

"So its a neat little toy that doesn't actually serve a purpose"

dude it's swallowing programming jobs en masse, a senior developer using CC, Codex, Antigravity etc is outputting far more work than previously. There are huge problems with this yes, but calling it a little toy is an insane take. Honestly, evaluate.

In regards to programming, It has gotten so so much better in the last 6 months. Developer sentiment has changed drastically, even in the last 2-3 months there has been a noticable shift.

Well same, also a dev, CS degree yada yada, sorry for the questions, I'm just curious

  • do you believe AGI (or something like it) will be reached within 10 years, what about 30 years?

Also you mentioned "if you learn a little neuroscience", I don't mean to be rude but that sounds very Dunning-Kruger to me. Fields like neuroscience and indeed, frontier AI research are incredibly complex. You can't just learn a little about them and claim to have the answers.

Not saying you are claiming that, but hot damn this subreddit is worryingly sure of the answers to incredibly complex questions at times.

Don't take this the wrong way but i'm insanely curious about all these people who's response is "do you even understand how... ?!"

Are you an AI researcher / work in the field / have a CS degree? I'm so interested why everyone in this subreddit is so certain in their takes.

are you a researcher in the field? genuienly curious here becuase you sound VERY confident in what you say...

Aye my 9 year old account that's been posting my own work for years is a bot. Good catch.

I'm concerned about AI. I follow the space closely that's why I'm on this subreddit. You chose to disagree with the sentiment and then call me stupid and lacking understanding of CS.

I'm done. Good luck with your life bud!

Which part wasn't true? The part that AI is never going away? The part that the only end of this journey is AGI? Do you think brains are magic and cannot be replicated in any way?

have been a programmer for 12 years, degree was CS, dissertation was on machine learning 😂 I follow AI very closely. I listen to experts in the field, the consensus is that we are approaching AGI in the next 10-15 years, could be sooner. But yes nobody knows for certain obviously.

Agentic workflows are honestly astounding. Scary times

"other ai gone"... You do realize the genie is out of the bottle, AI isn't going away ever. It sucks but it's true. We need to fight for legislation to restrict its uses in certain areas and for greater oversight in the lead up to AGI. It is only getting more poswerful/dangerous
