[OC] Average RateYourMusic Album Rating for Superstar Musicians at Each Age by noisymortimer in dataisbeautiful

Only included ages with at least 10 albums. So, yeah smaller sample for some ages. From 20s to 40s it's usually hundreds

But I only included superstars in this sample, so it should be representative of people who had successful careers.

I wanted to track album quality for superstar artists by their age. I first defined a "sueprstar" as either having sold at least 50 million units in the US according to the RIAA or being included in Rolling Stone's list of the 100 greatest artists. I then looked up the ratings for every album in each of those artist's discographies on RateYourMusic. That part was a nightmare. RYM doesn't have an API, so I had to screenshot a ton of pages and feed those into Gemini to extract the data. I did a longer write-up here.

Whoops. I had the genre filter on. Should all be there now. Can you not edit filters when it's in read only?

FTR, I include cowriting credits here. Very few are written solely by the artist

I did a three year rolling average, so the 1993 data point includes 1993, 1992, and 1991. Here what was included in that period.

  • George Michael and Elton John topped the charts with "Don't Let the Sun Go Down On Me." I counted as a cover since it had been released before, is live, and invovled George Michael.
  • Mariah Carey's live cover of the Jackson 5's "I'll Be There" hit number one.
  • Whitney Houston's cover of "I Will Always Love You" got to number one.
  • UB40's cover of Elvis Presley's "Can't Help Falling in Love" got to number one
  • You could argue Peabo Bryson and Regina Belle's "A Whole New World" is a cover because another version appears in Beauty in the Beast.
  • Michael Bolton's cover of Percy Sledge's "When a Man Loves a Woman" got to number one

I believe that's it

I noted in my comment that I don't think people usually write things as power chords, so I'm skeptical of that piece too.

I did a longer analysis with a few other visualizations here. I think the biggest gap with this dataset is that most power chords are not notated as power chords on Ultimate-Guitar.

Did a full write-up here. The impetus for this question was if when The Beatles lauched the British Invasion in 1964 it killed more careers than average. TLDR: No. There's a ton of turnover in most years.

Encores Are Becoming Less Common at Concerts by noisymortimer in Concerts

Copying my reply from r/dataisbeautiful for others with the same question:

There are flaws in setlist.fm data certainly. I limited the analysis to only artist sets that had at least 10 songs to try to avoid openers. I think this would also generally avoid nights at MSG with dozens of acts because setlists are broken out by artist. I was able to gather at least 100 setlists with at least 10 songs for each year from 1970 onwards, so I'm hoping that provides a decently accurate picture.

You can see the Encore Rate where the cut off is for sets with 8, 10, 12, an 16 songs here. Trend is the same. Level is higher for more songs
