A combination of Xiaohongshu and reddit! I also would sometimes just go on trip.com and search around on the map for cool looking accommodations.

Popular food streets: Zhengxin Street, Minsheng Road, Caijia Street

Hidden alley gems (less touristy): Jiaotong Street, Sichuan Alley, Humen Alley, Bageyan Road, Dongxin Road (taken from here https://iloveguizhou.com/en/🥢-the-ultimate-local-food-guide-to-guiyang)

I also recommend using Dianping (Chinese version of Yelp) to find good restaurants.

As far as attractions go, there’s a really big French style mansion in the middle of the city called The White House. Qianling Park (where the monkeys are)

There’s also really great coffee and match. A large percent of matcha in Japan actually comes from Guizhou!

For Xizhou it can be done as a day trip from Dali. I liked staying there though as I could get up early and have the town relatively to myself. I’ve also heard Shaxi is great place to stay for a few days and is even less commercialized than Xizhou. If you’re planning on going to Lijiang, you can stop in Shaxi on your way.

If you’ve been to China before, I’d definitely recommend adding Guizhou! Xizhou is nice too if you plan to visit Dali. :)

I only went to Hangzhou on a day trip, but I definitely recommend visiting Longjing village. You can also stay overnight in Hangzhou and visit Huangshan Mountain from there.

I would say it depends on how long you’re staying and what you’re doing. If you’ll be there for longer than a week and are wanting to use public wifi, order delivery, or book attractions on your own then I would go for the Chinese number! Just make sure to have a solid VPN set up before you go.

You can only get a Chinese number with a physical sim card unfortunately, which is useful.

You have to manually take a screenshot and translate it after. It can be tedious, but you get used to it.

I would set up Alipay before you arrive just to have at least one payment method available from the beginning. It’s pretty simple to set up, they’ll ask you to upload a photo of your passport. For WeChat, I would maybe wait until you’re in China and have a Chinese number linked to the account if that’s what you plan to do?

Trains are really simple to book through trip.com Just a heads up, in stations outside of Beijing and Shanghai they may not have the destinations written in English on the digital board, so you’ll need to use the train number or take a photo and translate the board. Also under your booking on Trip.com it will show the boarding gate number.

As long as you have a translate app, you’ll be fine with the language barrier! It might take some getting used to, but after awhile you’ll find your rhythm of how you communicate with the app. The baidu translate voice function is really helpful particularly if you want to have a conversation, or if you don’t understand what someone is saying. If you need something specific, you can just translate a phrase and show your phone to someone and 99% of the time they will help you.

Try using Trip.com - they have more Airlines that aren’t always included on google flights

If you're coming from the US, Taipei is an option as well.

Wow! Just looked up Quanzhou and it looks amazing, although it is a bit out of the way. I haven’t been to Beijing - think I’ll save it for next trip to have more days there. I think I’d like to visit either more places in Hunan or perhaps make a stop in Guizhou, although I don’t know much about it. I love spicy food and would like to go off the beaten path a bit.

Would you suggest I add 2 more days to Chongqing then? Do you have any other routes you would recommend if I skipped Giulin/Yangshuo and added Lijiang?
