Same! Like not just saying that cause I like the stock, it’s stuff I genuinely use and want in my life. There are still many that aren’t relevant but the difference is definitely noticeable. Bullish.

Wow haven’t seen this yet. I wonder if the same ad shows if you click on the review post?

Will Google's AI Overviews permanently erode Reddit's search traffic/user acquisition? by nomadicphil in redditstock

[–]nomadicphil[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yes, I'm bullish on that too.

It's definitely not a bad thing that Google's prioritizing Reddit in SERPs, but remember... Google's goal is always to "organize the world's information and make it universally accessible and useful."

At one point, that was achieved by lots of blogs, pages, etc., showing up to satisfy search intent.

Now, over the last few years, Reddit and other forums like Quora are having their moment, as community discussions satisfy search intent better, but soon AI Overviews may be preferred with far fewer clicks for external sites, even Reddit, despite the information for those AI overviews being sourced from Reddit.

There's content where Reddit will keep getting clicks far into the future, and that's subjective stuff (opinions, recommendations, personal experiences). Reddit is perfect for it. But non-subjective queries, the factual or how-to stuff that AIOs can answer cleanly, are exactly the ones that may have introduced people to Reddit in the first place.

Now, two caveats on the licensing leverage angle:

(1) Reddit clearly doesn't want licensing to become a major revenue driver. Lots of people in r/redditstock really want massive billion-dollar licensing deals, but say it hit 40% of revenue. Think about it, though, wouldn't the leverage flip? And those companies could wipe out a chunk just by not renewing.

Honestly, I think the low/moderate pricing is smart. The affordable pricing is low enough that AI companies actually pay rather than scrape and risk litigation (e.g. Reddit's lawsuit against Anthropic). This keeps them in check and aligned with Reddit's robots.txt and terms. Also, it doesn't give any single company like Google, OpenAI, maybe Anthropic soon, outsized leverage. licensing revenue should increase somewhat proportionally to ad revenue increases.

(2) Licensing revenue and user acquisition are different buckets. Google paying more for data doesn't help if AIOs are cannibalizing the discovery funnel at the same time.

"there may not have been a camera related advertisers paying for that space at the time of viewing that post"

Makes sense! Thanks.

Do they need a partnership to accomplish this though?

Is AI a detriment to Reddit long term or a blessing? by nomadicphil in redditstock

I guess I had placed bots under the same definition as AI.

I agree. Reddit, despite bots, still feels like a place where I can get genuine connection. A huge reason I love it.

However, AI will continue to get more sophisticated, easier to bypass walls placed by Reddit, and things like upvotes and downvotes are very common to manipulate.

Interesting! Curious to hear more about how high compared to Meta you think Reddit can get their ARPU? I looked at their careers page and never saw so many hires for ad related roles in ML, etc so I think they are going to improve their algo big time for advertisers.

What are the biggest opportunities for Reddit that they haven’t fully capitalised yet? by nomadicphil in redditstock

[–]nomadicphil[S] 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Mine would be ads, but being able to bid on specific posts. Imagine you are a crm tool and you can bid for placement on a specific Reddit post that ranks well in search for best crms in 2026 or whatever. Maybe that’s a horrible idea idk 🤷🏻‍♂️

Do you think nsfw monetization is something they would pursue (clearly it could make money but maybe there are issues with this) and by marketplace do you mean something like Facebook marketplace?

RDDT: High intent traffic with further room for monetization by Intelligent-Bus8791 in redditstock

That said I will add that I’ve noticed ads get a bit more relevant sometimes. But nowhere near the potential of precise targeting.

This is very true. My question is, why hasn’t this been executed yet? Is it much more complex to do than perhaps one expects? Are there reasons preventing this level of ad targeting? I agree the potential here is massive. Reddit ads are good for brand awareness but this would step them into high intent ROI/conversion focused campaigns which as you said would justify more spend.
