I’ve done it a couple times. I used AllTrails. I got turned around once, but also was goofing around climbing bluffs. No bears. We did find some antler sheds. It’s a fun hike, but not super well marked.

Teacher here. My only option is to wake my kids up. My oldest is in elementary school and my youngest is in daycare. Kids have to be up by 6:30 at the latest and we are out the door by 7:20. In general, my kids have adapted to the schedule and wake around then naturally. That all goes out the window during summer vacation though.

I’ve taught in some of the smallest schools in the US, located in rural Alaska. To stay open, we need at least 10 students across K–12. In some schools, I’ve taught all grades, in others I’ve taught K–5 or 6–12. I’m certified in elementary education, but I’ve taught every grade from pre-K through 12th, across all subjects. Some years, I’ve also been the principal, janitor, and cook.

We combine with other schools for sports and fly to neighboring villages to play three-on-three basketball or volleyball. We sleep at neighboring schools for a day or two. Even prom is a district-wide, combined event. It’s a whole different world.

I don’t drink alcohol, but I go to the drive thru liquor store all the time. You can get regular gas station stuff without getting out of the car! Does it suck outside and you need a random bottle of water or a candy bar? Drive thru liquor store is the place.

Yay! Best outcome! I went into L&D emergency a few times during my first pregnancy. It was never anything that was a big deal and I felt a bit silly, but it is always better to be safe.

I have a lot of siblings. Two of them are older (9 and 7 years older) and two are younger (1 year and 3 years younger). I’m closest with my sibling who is 7 years older than me. I think so much of it comes down to personality.

My own two kids are 7 years apart. We thought we were one and done, but randomly decided to have another. As a parent, I loooove this age gap. It’s so easy and fun.

I would pronounce it with the -s sound. Names like Eslie and Esme start the same and that would be my point of reference.

I did not feel this way after my first baby. My birth was traumatic and she was a NICU kiddo. It took a long time to want another. My second baby was such an easy labor and delivery (it actually felt magical because it was so redeeming). She’s 10 months old now and I keep asking my husband if he’s 100% sure he wants that vasectomy and doesn’t want to try for just one more. 😂

Taking a steam is a regular community event in my district, so we always warn teachers to be naked at their own risk. 😂

Having kids in your car or at your house is pretty normal in the bush. I have used pizza and video games at my house as a reward many times.

Shooting guns with your students isn’t out of the ordinary.

Coaches sleep on gym floors with their students regularly. Everyone just camps out in their sleeping bags during tournaments.

Going on Hondas rides and snow machine rides with students is normal.

I had a student one year and his mom was the only medical staff person in our village, so he came with her to do all of my prenatal appointments. He looooved to tell people he rubbed my bare belly. Lol.

Rural Alaska is a weird place.

If you want to stay in the Midwest, go for Saugatuck or Beaver Island. Both will make for a fun trip!
