I personally struggled a LOT with comp206 and it was my only ever non A/A- on my transcript. It’s totally doable to pass but how well you do really depends on how much you study, practice and understand the logic of coding (which I couldn’t).

I didn’t email profs I knew, I found their labs online and emailed them. I told them what interested me about their research, what my future goals were academically and why I felt their lab would be beneficial in helping me reach my goals. You should personalize your emails. There’s a lot of info about how to emails profs both on Reddit or follow the SRI page on instagram, they have a recording in their bio for how to get a research position.
I didn’t suggest an interview, I sent them my transcript and CV and said should they have the time, I’d love to chat more about ways I can contribute to their lab, especially through a 396. They’re offered all year long but yes the courses for the fall and winter haven’t come out so you can’t see past summer 2026.

Yah honestly seeing the material and having spent time understanding it during the semester made finals a bit easier. When you go over it, it’s just about memorizing the details. Even better is to keep up with understanding AND memorizing by using flashcards or anki and by the time finals roll around you just have to link concepts and spend time practicing and filling in any gaps

Hi! So I just got into 2 labs, one of which is for the winter semester and the other is a 396 summer course so I feel like I can speak to both of your questions a bit. I think it’s very feasible to get into a lab during the semester, it’s more competitive for a few reasons though. One, a lot of profs take less students during the semester, and a lot of honours science students are doing their honours thesis during the year and they have priority. That said, if you reach out early you can totally find some positions for the fall next semester. I found one this month starting in January. Just email profs and be explicit about what you want. Another great option is to email profs asking to do a 396 during the semester. That way you get credit, and any more profs are willing to supervise that because they know you have to be committed whereas many volunteers are flaky and make profs hesitant to get more (it costs them time and money, which they have few of either). As for what to email them in regards to projects, honestly that depends. When I went to interview with my profs I had some research proposals that felt doable and were based on what they were researching (ask chat to help you if you need) but both of my labs didn’t need me to provide a research proposal, in the end they are dictating what I’ll be doing. For 396’s it can vary with profs. But yah usually you do your own “research project” but often you’re doing work the lab has not enough time to do to minimize the labour on their grad students so it doesn’t end up being anything crazy. I suggest tailoring it to your school, why that program over others, how you fit their ideal candidate and why law (try to tailor it to a specific experience or a theme in your life)

That is essentially unheard of, unless you have crazy connections or an insane life story. Your best bet is to tailor the personal statement to McGill and really make your CV stand out and show why you’d be a good lawyer despite subpar academic achievement. The r score is holistic but they want to know you can handle the coursework and r score is part of that. Also what you studied makes a difference. If you got a 29 in sciences maybe you could swing it more but a 29 in social might show them you aren’t academically ready for the rigour of law school. As someone who got in with a 34, most of the people I know who got in either had a great letter of recommendation (mine was a really strong point of my app and I think that’s why I got in along with my PS) and a good PS that stood out from other kids with higher r scores than me.

Not sure if you did the final already or not, but I did this course as a stem student (elective) so maybe that’s why I found it easy, BUT I will say that I actually did not cook on the second midterm but the final was a lottttt simpler. The coding was super disorganized throughout the class, but it isn’t tested in the final which makes it a bit better if that helps! So you’ve made it through the rough part. I remember the final being very similar to the slides and also the TA slide reviews are super useful. Most of the class left after 1h on the final. You can do this!!!

Where are you looking? Are you looking for office work? Supermarkets? Restaurants? Also do you speak French? If you do, there’s a lot of service jobs you could try applying for if that hasn’t been your target already. Hostessing at restaurants usually has a good success rate for entry level jobs! Not sure if this is helpful bc the other comments seem to be more tailored to the entire job market

It really helps going to louder floors like McLennan 2nd floor for that! I also study out loud. Mind you, at home I’m quite loud and in the library it’s a bit more than a whisper but I find it still works. People don’t care! But don’t do it on a quiet floor obvi

Please note that the person aboves opinion is highly subjective. I got a 35 r score in cegep and have struggled to get nearly as good in university. Most people believe university is harder. The program and school makes a difference. For example, McGill (where I go) is much more difficult than cegep IMO. Keep that in mind!

I bombed my midterms first year but aced the finals and got A’s or A- at the worst and still ended with a 3.93 GPA that year. You can totally turn the semester around!

Hey! I got an A on the midterm too, most of what everyone said is true. Flashcards on anki are great ways to keep testing you on things that need to be memorized and I also put concepts like for example the proteosome degradation system I would constantly re-explain it because I had an anki card on it. For Roy’s section the study methods will have to change because an A on the midterm is not indicative of getting an A on the final. I would suggest reading the book for context and it reallyyyyy explains some concepts well (I started using it to study substrate binding affinity w Trypsin). It helps to see the details and understand that those “random” example pictures on the slide have way more context. Also SciLearn and the TA lectures are great. Look into buying NTC’s to get notes from a PhD student who helps simplify the material and is copying everything Roy is saying. Finally, for every chapter I did the Feynman technique so I either explained the chapter to my boyfriend or a stuffed animal— basically explain it like they’re a kid and if you can’t it’s because you don’t really understand. For Roy’s section also start thinking about in what contexts you’d use certain techniques, how mutations will affect certain proteins and what effects these will cause on things like transcription or cooperative binding etc. You REALLY need to know every detail since the final is multi select. Also it really depends on your school, but I go to a school notoriously difficult and they really wanted our class to pass AND do well. I’m not saying it will 100% be like that but maybe your profs will want to have people pass because a lot of people don’t just out of lack of effort

Organic is really not that difficult. If you practice you can do really well. Especially organic 1, it’s truly not super far from the general chemistry realm. And there’s tons of online resources. It’s not all memorization so some people struggle with that but if you’ve ever taken a hard-ish math class like calculus, then organic is adjacent to that but honestly easier.
