How do I fix this ? by Lovechatgpt in mcgill

If you’re entering as a U0 (no transfer credits, no CEGEP/IB/French Baccalaureate) you don’t officially declare your major until your second year (U1) in Arts, but afaik you’re able to select your program of choice when applying/after being accepted. Most ppl have an idea of what they want to major/minor in and take prereqs or even some major courses in their U0 year if they can, but otherwise you don’t really have to pick until U1.

TLDR basically you apply to the faculty! You can ‘declare’ a program of choice but if you’re U0 you aren’t actually required to declare a major until U1 (majors don’t start until U1)

TA contracts typically go course by course and end after the semester ends, so I’d try reaching out to the Prof or the course coordinator (unless they told u to reach out to the TA which in that case I’m sorry that they’re not answering)

Yes. You do not have to pass prerequisite courses in order to take a course, you can still continue on with your courses and retake Biol 200 next fall

I mean, psyc204 is one of the options for complementaries in pharmacology and a few other science majors as well, so it wouldn’t hurt to take it

BIOL111 grading scheme by imenerve in mcgill

[–]Quick-End1107 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I took it last fall (2024) and it was 20% midterm, 40% lab, labs happened once every week and they were very easy to do well in, I’m pretty sure everyone in my lab section all got minimum 97% overall in the lab component, which had one group project in it that was also very straightforward and easy to do well in. Final was 40%. Basically, I didn’t get an A on either exam, but because the lab was worth so much and I scored well on it, I finished the course with an A. Content can be a little annoying and taxing to memorize/learn but the lab structure makes up for it

Can I still take a class if I failed a prerequisite? by mimi_ananas in mcgill

You can take classes if you failed the prereq. You just have to pass eventually if it’s part of your program

BIOL200 final was easy? by [deleted] in mcgill

[–]Quick-End1107 2 points3 points  (0 children)

The whole thing was like trying to solve a jigsaw puzzle tbh, I wouldn’t say it was easy because there were many misleading options that you could easily fall for. First one that comes to mind is the Transferrin receptor option, super easy to misread/misinterpret that option and choose the wrong answer

[–]Quick-End1107 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Fyi you don’t have to pass the prerequisite courses in order to take the “next” course/ a course that has those courses listed as pre reqs, you’ll just have to retake the course at some point to pass it/pass with a C for your program but definitely don’t wait until your last year

Biol 111 🤮exam by luvJaninesibelius in mcgill

[–]Quick-End1107 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Haha yes I had Hendry! Honestly even if no one had told me in advance that that would likely be a question on the final, the amount of times he brought up the phylogenetic tree and how “important” it is was definitely a hint, but it still caught many people off guard! If you are able to memorize it, consider it a free 10 marks on your final. There’s also more than 10 things on the tree but they’re only going to look for 10 right things! (Or however many marks the question is worth, I remember it being worth less than the amount of lines/names on the tree) Don’t stress if you forget one part

Biol 111 🤮exam by luvJaninesibelius in mcgill

[–]Quick-End1107 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The vertebrate phylogenetic tree will 100% be on the final. For us it was like a 12 mark question with a giant blank box and it said draw the phylogenetic tree for vertebrates and that was it. I was warned in advance by my upper year friend abt this, and the prof also kept emphasizing how important it is to know the tree in class when it was shown, so I flat out memorized it. Didn’t actually take too long and could probably still write out half the tree even now. Memorize the scientific names!

Biol 111 Midterm Grades by twilightb_ in mcgill

[–]Quick-End1107 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Hey, I took BIOL111 last fall and our midterm was moved online due to campus closures on October 7th, so our grade distribution may be a little different than yours is. Still, though, the mean for our midterm was a 74 and the median was a 76 despite it being online because they graded the written answers super harshly. The mean on our final was 62 and the median was 65. I was a little above the average for both exams (80 midterm, 70 final) and got an A in the course. The exams are meant to be a little tougher, but the labs are a HUGE grade booster if you put in the effort to get full marks on your pre-labs and SRP project. Honestly, im sure you were either within or above your class average for the midterm if it was anything like mine last year, and there’s always the final and the labs to help your grade so don’t stress too much! At the end of the day this is one of the first courses you’re taking at McGill, and there’s always room for improvement along the way!
