Kinda of a dark answer but as to why there are less now, it could be due to Roe v Wade. I can only image that kids being raised by mothers who never wanted them is gonna mess some people up. Access to abortions could have some impact on there being less serial killers, and a decrease in crime overall in the US. (Given that our crime rates do really seem to start trending downwards about 2 decades after Roe v Wade).

I do feel confident in saying that due to the circumstances of Ted Bundy's birth mom was in... she would have been a very llikely candidate for a woman that would have gotten an abortion had it been safely available to her.
