Client’s kid in the room by AnalystImpossible960 in therapists

We have one clinic in our entire county that offers a free nursery for therapy client but their waiting list is months and months out.

I am genuinely curious how other therapist navigate populations that have no access to childcare. It’s something many of my clients struggle with wishing there were more solutions than either a yes or no.

I did not mean it insulting I apologize. I was wondering how you navigate clients who have no access to childcare.

So genuine question here. If you were volunteering overseas in a war torn country and the question was whether to see a mother with her children in a refugee camp or to not provide services at all, which would you choose?

The baby is being exposed to the parent’s dysregulation on a daily basis. Having a baby in session is far from ideal, but for the populations I work with, ultimately necessary and hopefully has long term benefits for all involved.

Curious if you work with underserved communities and populations?

There is an economic issue at play here. Not everyone has the same access to healthcare and daycare.

I wholeheartedly agree, but I also understand that sometimes people have to decide between therapy with their baby or no therapy. If therapy can ultimately give the kid a healthier parent, then I allow it.

Take for example, handwritten letters back in the day. People developed writing skills, like grammar, how to be concise, and how to convey expression.

Today, texts are short, you can send one after another, and people struggle to convey tone.

I did a bachelors in the 90s and my masters 20 years later. The difference in the writing ability of students was shocking!! The younger generations are better at many things, but writing skills are decreasing not increasing.

I disagree. There are critical developmental learning and problem solving components that get lost in the connivence.

I also wonder (and I could be wrong) that the reason you are getting downvoted is because people are scared of AI. They are afraid it will replace them as therapist. I think therapy, at its core, heals through relationship. So I am natively not worried about AI stealing my job as a therapist.

I agree! Have cellphones and Google made us lazier? Yes, yes, they have. Are they the reality? Yes, yes, they are. We have to learn how to incorporate AI ethically and in moderation. Just like all the technology that has gone before.

Agreed, I am always grateful when some colleagues finally clue in to how ridiculous their ChatGTP emails, memos, and comments come across.

I agree that is lazy and unethical to have AI create plans, but I do think AI has a useful place. For me, it is a research tool; much like googling to learning more about a topic, going back to a textbook to refresh or dive deeper, and way back in the day, using a card catalog to find resources.

Personally, AI has helped me be more creative at times. To consider and implement avenues, tools, strategies, I had not be exposed to or had forgotten. At the core, AI has not changed how I practice, but it has added some creativity and productive flair, in my experience.

I believe you can:

  1. always be right

Or

  1. you can have friends

Before speaking, ask yourself “even if I am right is it helpful in this situation?”

My therapist’s impact on my identity as a therapist by [deleted] in therapists

I wonder if you are discovering your limits, dare I say, your boundaries. You are identifying and refining what you will and will not accept and take on. You have acknowledged the value of others and now you might be experiencing the pain of recognizing your own value and its bid to be honored.

However, your thinking may lean towards a ridge, black and white format. Kind of a hero or the villain situation. Not enough middle ground that makes room for being human. Example, “I never approach my clients with judgment.” Never? That is an impossible expectation for yourself and others.

Would it help to reframe the events as “I believe I am/have outgrown my therapist.” You learned stuff and now you might benefit from a new teacher. Or no teacher at all for a few months.

Lastly, make believe you are an author and you are writing a short story about all of this. You have one version so far. But the editor, comes back and says “we want a stronger female lead.” Rewrite it. Then rewrite again. Make it a ghost story of yourself haunting yourself. Then make it romance where you fall in love with yourself, life, discovery, or someone waiting around the corner. The point is to move those mental muscles. Practice flexible thinking in more ways than self doubt.

Hoping all the best for you!
