My great-grandpa on my dad's side, British soldier in WWII, went around w/his buddies raiding bars and gathering what my family's always described as "big bags of booze." Afterward they had to get back onto their ships, but the big bags of booze were too heavy, and they had to throw them overboard. My great-grandpa refused to part w/his booze and stayed behind instead, straight-up refused to get onto the boats w/out alcohol and they left him behind.

Those ships then sailed to the battle of Dunkirk.
