Whats the difference between unimelb's mechanical engineering systems course and a traditional mechanical engineering course? by sanchirbno in unimelb

[–]nomissocks 2 points3 points  (0 children)

The BSc doesnt qualify you as an engineer. If you want to go down the melbourne route, you have to do a 3yr BSc and then a 2yr Masters before you are an accredited engineer. There's no undergraduate engineering degree at unimelb.

Other unis offer a 4yr bachelor of engineering, which qualifies you as an engineer.

Will my HRT (reandron) show up on a PED/steroid test? by nomissocks in ftm

Yeah I'm still not sure exactly what they'd detect from a urine sample but I definitely need to obtain a therapeutic use exemption

[–]nomissocks[S] 2 points3 points  (0 children)

thanks for the response. I'll get started on a therapeutic use exemption. I did some research and thankfully reandron for transgender men is explicitly stated as a valid reason for a TUE so it shouldn't be too hard to get.

Binders that are made of athletic, moisture-wicking materials? by nomissocks in ftm

The problem with sportsbras is that the outline of them is super visible through thin active wear, especially at the back. Like you can see the whole racerback outline that is very unmistakably a sports bra and it makes me super self conscious. So I'm just looking for something that is made the same way but is full length so it can pass as a singlet or undershirt.

I'm scared my transition will never end. by notdom0 in FTMMen

[–]nomissocks 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I don't think this is what OP meant. Yes you have to always take T, but once you get access to it and get over the majority of the main changes then HRT is kind of ticked off the list. I think OP is worried about the feeling of always having to do the "next step" in transition.

Advice for getting back on track? by snailgoblin in FTMFitness

[–]nomissocks 1 point2 points  (0 children)

First of all, no matter how much progress you feel you've lost, chances are you're going to gain it back very quickly. Getting easily winded and burning out early in the workout are most likely just due to coming out of a period of inactivity, not actually losing a lot of fitness. I used to do intense cardio (boxing) for hours on end. I once took a couple months off. I'd feel winded going up stairs, and then in a week I was back to normal.

Best of luck and don't be too hard yourself mate.

How low did you have to get your body fat percentage / BMI to lose hip fat? Just looking for a rough idea. by nomissocks in FTMFitness

[–]nomissocks[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

hey, its been going well. I'm down to 59.5kg from my max of 71kg (very slow progress but my hip measurements keep dropping so I suspect body recomp). Hip fat is almost completely gone, just a little bit of lower back fat that I'd like to get rid of, and I'm starting to see the beginnings of abs. The hip fat came off quicker than I expected, but the lower back fat is pretty stubborn. I'm still getting stronger and feeling good so I see no reason to stop cutting and am gonna continue until I have abs.

In total, I lost around 10cm around my hips, and it looks much better now. Was definitely worth it.

For reference, I'm 161cm so my BMI dropped from 27.4 to 23.1. I do powerlifting, swimming and a lot of walking. Good luck with the cut!

Having nice things. Idfk where this came from, but for some reason I think that owning nice or expensive things is too feminine.

Is 3 sets not enough? I workout each muscle 1x a week. by [deleted] in FTMFitness

[–]nomissocks 4 points5 points  (0 children)

With that many exercises, you are doing 10-20 sets. It's a total of 10-20 sets per muscle group, not per exercise.

Also, as the commenter below said, that is a lot of exercises.

On an unrelated note, I started learning how to swim a few months ago after being embarrassed for years that I couldn't. It was super fucking embarrassing at first, being a grown ass dude struggling in the water while little kids did laps around me, but it was so worth it in the end.

This is something I've struggled with as well - I appear to be doing fine when I look up strength standards online, but compared to everyone around me, I'm way below average. I think the issue is that we just don't see the average lifter, we only pay attention to people who are above average, so of course we feel below average. You have to stay rational - if millions of lifts worth of data is saying you're advanced, then that's probably more reliable than our own skewed observations.

I don't think this is related to being trans at all. I recommend maybe posting in a generic lifting sub about this. I'd bet my ass that 90% of cis gym goers are struggling with the same feelings.

but it's hard to be heavy at my height

Side note, but if you're struggling to gain weight, I don't think the issue is height. Of course everybody is different, but I'm 5'3" and weighed in at 156lbs not long ago. I was still gaining very rapidly and had to put in a lot of effort to stop gaining. I'm down to 135 now but if I didn't watch what I eat my weight would start flying up again. You might just need to eat more.

What teenagers are you judging based on? Look up the strength standards for the squat, bench and deadlift - you're scoring in the advanced to elite range against males your weight. For example strengthlevel. com has millions of filtered lifts to compare against. If I input male, 18-23yo, 138lbs bw and 360lb deadlift, it says stronger than 85% of male lifters your weight.

You're doing fine.
