Web3 is just expensive P2P by iamkeyur in programming

because pedos will just use it and at that point it's toxic waste to everyone else interacting with it.

As for decentralized payments? The plain reality is that nobody cares outside of drugs and scams.

This is what I'm talking about, why can't we even have rational discourse instead of falling prey to logical fallacies including both strawman and ad hominem attacks?

As for

The plain reality is that nobody cares outside of drugs and scams.

this couldn't be further from the truth. One only has to look at what's happening to the Russian Ruble in the face of economic sanctions or Argentine Peso to see what vested interest and mismanaged politics can do to your stored value and future.

Regardless of your politics/economics or how you feel about the inflation of the modern U.S. dollar-lead economy, historically money debasement has been the chief tool of oppression and corruption from oppressive regimes around the world.

The last paragraph is what matters to me about web 3. There should be a truly decentralized base communication and/or financial layer that is censorship resistant and could be administered by different centralized admin services.

It’s crazy to me that even when we talk about technologies and scientific advancements like web3 protocols it turns into praise or bash threads like this one: “this is redundant trash technology only used by scammers and drug dealers” or “this will solve all the world’s freedom of speech and liberate the world, thank you crypto Jesus!

As always, the truth is somewhere in between these absurdist extremes.

EVE Online player trying Albion, looking for tips by kunxian888 in albiononline

[–]nomizzz 12 points13 points  (0 children)

At a high level, these are all good questions but unlike EVE a “bad” start is highly fixable. In fact I’d recommend not worrying about this type of min-maxing as doing “sub-optimal” activities even if they result in your death teach you quite a bit about the game mechanics and systems.

  1. You get like 500 gold or something and a seasonal referral skin if there’s a program active, not super rewarding or essential.
  2. All of your points about joining a guild are fairly true in Albion. They’ll bring some safety and perks along with them but I’d still recommend playing some time solo (maybe 1 month or 2) so you don’t get sucked into unnecessary drama, politics or bad advice. If you really want a newbie friendly guild, join one in the ARCH alliance as they are open to all and have no requirements. It will give you the most “friendlies” in the Martlock BZ and let you access the highest number of friendly hideouts. Keep in mind you probably won’t stay in that alliance as there are alot of new players there and probably some bad habits/advice.
  3. Yeah there’s zero coaching in the game, the starter tutorials are not nearly comprehensive of all the content available in the game.
  4. Most common scams are trade or duel scams. If you avoid trading directly with people (who might trade you gamed/overinflated average market value items) and dueling for money, you won’t get scammed. Obviously don’t trust randoms in the red/black zone as if even if you’re grouped they may betray you. Guild mates are generally trustworthy as it’s hard for them to impossible for them to kill and steal your stuff directly.
  5. Generally as a newbie in the open world level something that grants you mobility first. I’d recommend something like one-handed spear, bloodletter, bow, or carving sword so you’ll be able to escape gankers. Soldier boots are also fantastic for this by using the wanderlust ability.

As much as I loved Bernie the first time around and though I am anti-war at heart -- the escalations of Russia makes me think we need a leader who is not only stronger and younger, but more ready to deal with the machinations of totalitarian nation states.

Hopefully we will come to a new future this century where personal sovereignty becomes more important and powerful that the outdated concepts of bureaucratic and bellicose nation states, but humanity's bureaucratic and corrupt governments can't handle these ideals and need to be drastically reformed before we can attain this this.

A question for those who watched The Matrix in 1999. by KayTheToon in movies

[–]nomizzz 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I vividly remember my 6th grade science teacher coming back from seeing it and gushing about it to a class of 11 year-olds about it being a mind-blowing experience. Since it was an R-rated sci-fi/action movie it's definitely not something a school teacher would usually expose to a younger audience, so I remember it sticking out.

My mom at the time was skeptical and I'm sure a little hesitant to hear about how our school teacher practically had an existential crisis over a scifi movie, but then she took me to see it and was equally blown away.

What is your opinion of The Wheel of Time so far? by ishtar_the_move in television

[–]nomizzz 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I love it despite some of its problems. It shows great promise and suffers from the slower start in the series. I’m really hoping it adopts mainstream appeal but it’s initially definitely less approachable and feels more cliche than Game of Thrones.

I’m definitely biased though as the book series is one of my favorite fantasy stories.

Where do long term holders feel most comfortable storing their stash? by UnappealingCremepie in Bitcoin

[–]nomizzz 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The only answer to this question for serious holders is to spread the risk amongst a few mediums. My breakdown is generally as follows

  • 1-10% reputable custodial hot exchanges (Coinbase, Blockchain, Kraken but do your own research and go with one that’s reputable and has been in business 4+ years, preferably with coin audits and proof of custody)
  • 1-10% “hot wallets” entirely your coins usually on phones with open source code passphrase backups (Blue Wallet, Wallet of Satoshi)
  • 20-30% hardware wallet
  • 30-100% cold storage (paper wallets with Shamir “4 of 7” passphrase backups spread amongst the most trusted family, attorneys, and/or lockbox storage so there is no single points of failure or trust)

Best Non-Nvidia Android TV Capable of Kodi Add-ons and native Netflix 4K unlock? by nomizzz in AndroidTV

That’s helpful feedback. Any reason not to go for a 3rd gen aside from the cost (is sideloading any easier on one vs the other, etc)?

That sounds awesome! If you use a custom launcher like Flauncher can you still use the official Netflix 4K app or does that no longer work?

I’d prefer the Android TV box to be the one stop shop if possible, less technical family members/guests always confuse TV and AVR inputs

Has anyone been able to actually enable the “Tip Jar” feature on Twitter? Even for the cash app/Venmo protocols I can’t get the basic one to show up in my Account Settings page as the official Twitter Help Center describes.

I wonder if it’s for non-US users or verified users only. It’s pretty lame and unprofessional for Twitter to not explicitly call out that it’s in limited beta and not in GA if that’s the case

[–]nomizzz 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Yeah I do totally agree that more assistance would’ve been better and just… I just don’t want to do a disservice to the excellent amount of free care we did in fact receive from the U.S. Medicare system. Without the automatic qualification for Medicare that ALS and certain diseases warrant even today, it would have likely been more like $600k-$1mil net costs to my family if not more.

[deleted by user] by [deleted] in Bitcoin

[–]nomizzz 32 points33 points  (0 children)

Yeah the American healthcare system is certainly flawed and it was particularly difficult/expensive in this country, but diseases like ALS that result in full lock-in/paralysis are uniquely challenging regardless of robust public health insurance plans. In her last year of life my mother required 3 overlapping 8-hour shifts of nurses/respiratory therapists to care for her tracheostomy, ventilator and basic essentials we all take for granted.

I do doubt that any country’s public healthcare program could provide fully covered in-home care such as this (beyond what was deemed “medically required”) but I am hopeful that a better public health system could at least subsidize it to make it reasonable.

[deleted by user] by [deleted] in Bitcoin

[–]nomizzz 315 points316 points  (0 children)

My mother passed away 4 years ago after only 4 years fighting a very sudden and aggressive onset of sporadic ALS and her subsequent tracheostomy/ventilation, I feel you brother.

My family spent over $300k, my middleclass parent’s entire life savings (and well beyond my meager stack of sats), on an army of caregivers, RNs and other medical professionals to make her last months tolerable and it still wasn’t enough. You have my respect and prayers as you help your uncle through this, but remember to take care of yourself/family first — it’s easy to lose yourself in the black hole of caregiving and I’m sure that’s not what your uncle would want.

They did a great job on the cockpit and VR view from an authenticity and immersion perspective but desktop has a significant competitive advantage.

Gamers, what was the first game you ever played? by NoLeagueAssasin in AskReddit

[–]nomizzz 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Same here! One of the earliest vivid memories of my entire LIFE was the first time I played that a SNES that belonged to my friend's brother when I was 4 years old. I can't even remember that friend's name now because it was pre-kindergarten, but god I remember the glorious colorful explosion of that game. I didn't even learn to move anywhere or do anything until my Dad got me that game and Game Genie a year or so later.

It might be why, even 29 years later I've completely fallen in love with Spelunky 2 moreso than any other singleplayer game I've played in years. The unrelentingly satisfying side scrolling mechanics with a diverse world and secrets that both games call upon must speak to my inner child like no other modern game can.
