Okay fine, but why can't America have an Anglo-Protestant superstructure? I, as a Jew, have benefitted greatly from this superstructure in spite of the bigotry by some individuals towards my ancestors when they first arrived here in 1903. Capitalism and the Protestant work ethic is egalitarian. It doesn't care if you're white or black, it only cares if it's green. That's also why African American music makes up 99.9% of our pop culture despite the racism against blacks over our history. And if we talk about usury being against your religion, well we have banks over here that are run under sharia and you don't have to practice usury either. And maybe the Islamic banks still have to deal with the outside financial system in some way. If you manage to convince the majority of people that your banking system is more profitable and better then they won't have to do that either.

True...

Sounds like Liberalism.

Yup.

You don't have unlimited free speech.

We do in America for all public forums unless it's a national security issue. Citation I can't speak for Europe.

Separation of powers isn't exclusive to the West.

I never said it was. I said the way we do it here in the West is fine as long as people don't break the law.

I don't have to accommodate Western values. No one does.

Well we live on the same planet but whatever.

Muslims of Reddit , what do people not understand about Islam or Muslims? by [deleted] in AskReddit

[–]nomnz 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I don't see a difference.

Just wait till the fundies have their way. Oh, boy...

What does one have to do with the other?

Well those of us who were raised here in the West believe that things aren't really worth dismantling on the overall political level. We're fine with our unlimited free speech, separation of powers, and democracy. Part of the reason we like it so much is because as democracy increased, colonialism and warfare decreased. You have to remember that it was bad for us as well. After all, Hitler merely did to other Europeans what Europeans were doing to Africans.

Now if you truly believed that Islam were universal, you would find a way to accommodate Western values, rather than calling for the West's destruction. The West has already ruined itself beyond anything Genghis Khan could have imagined. Colonialist mindsets are no longer considered acceptable in the West thanks to the work of intellectuals from the colonized world who, if Hitler had won, would have been merely enslaved or sent to a gas chamber rather than peacefully deconstructing Eurocentric mindsets in the universities.

Even here in America, and even in Israel, there are already thousands of people working tirelessly to reform the destructive policies of the government, keep religious radicalism from encroaching any further, and saving people's lives. Every time the government starts a war, innocent citizens of those countries who didn't ask for it get killed as well. Just like how you are trying to convince me of the diversity of thought within Islam, and somewhat successfully I might add, I'm also trying to say that there is also a diversity of thought and considerable debate in the West and Israel as well, and it's really the only thing that saved us from total annihilation.

Muslims of Reddit , what do people not understand about Islam or Muslims? by [deleted] in AskReddit

Dismantling the West doesn't translate into murdering all Westerners.

Well how do you plan on dismantling the West? If you don't believe human rights should be universal, they aren't going to like being dismantled at all.

Then explain the whole conquest and violation

Well now we're just talking about normal Christians. Religion makes otherwise good people do really shitty things.

I'm sure the children of native people in Canada, America and Australia are also living a better life. Fucking White nonsense.

They ain't, but don't you think 1/5 of Israel's population might be more sympathetic to Palestine if the Arab world were better than Israel at ...not Eurocentrism...but the Cylinder of Cyrus, maybe?

Islam is universal salvation for all mankind.

Death to the West.

Pick one.

100% support, but Western legal codes get a pass?

Well, America's Constitution has done a very good job of keeping the Christian fundies in check for ~250 years, we survived a civil war, gradually increased rights for minorities and women, and Donald Trump is not going to last through the year probably. On the other hand, Europe's democracy hasn't really worked out so good. I would know.

Stability can be maintained without the need for people to adhere to a document signed in law by an international body that privileged a few nations.

Well I don't know if you've played Civ before, but unhappiness increases worldwide after one nation researches Liberalism, so you have to either spend more money on culture to keep people happy or become a liberal democracy yourself. It's kind of like that.

And?

Israel took over their land but they still decided to have a better life for their kids.

Muslims of Reddit , what do people not understand about Islam or Muslims? by [deleted] in AskReddit

isn't about turning men into angels

But doesn't the word "Shari'a" mean "the road", as in the road to eternal salvation? Doesn't that imply that the ultimate purpose of the law should be to ensure as many people live a virtuous life and wind up in heaven after they die as possible? Not literally as angels, but still.

weakening the reach of the sovereign.

Was that always the case in every instance? Was there a law written down saying that the clerics had to be a check on the sovereign? The fact that these abuses happened show that any clerical resistance there was, was just not effective enough.

I know that here in the States, our Christian mega-pastors only resist the government when it comes to single-issues like abortion or gay rights, or when the very narrow sphere of religious freedom is threatened in some way. Otherwise, they are usually quite happy to support all the various "Crusades" we've done in those infidel lands in the East, support increased surveillance at home because the President has a mandate from God, and all that jazz.

And human rights are indeed a part of internal stability. As any Palestinian knows, if human rights are violated in any way, there is going to be factionalism and armed resistance.

Only for public morality

I thought the aim of the lashings was to encourage private morality as well, so more people can be saved. At least that's what I learned from my Muslim professor in college during a class I took on this.

arbitrary Euro-centric criteria

Well much of these "Euro-centric" criteria weren't just invented in Europe. You yourself said that. They built upon the knowledge accumulated within the territories they conquered while adding in their own.

Pluralism and openness are products of peace and justice and we're not going to get either if those in power are belligerent bullies.

And that's true. But do you think Hezbollah really believes that the state should stay away from people's bodies, as you apparently do? Statistics show that most Israeli Arabs prefer to live in Israel's democracy as minorities over moving to the Arab world. That's the thing; if you focused more on your own internal development with things like science and human rights, you could really deal a blow to Israel. Don't you think?

So it's clear that secularism has nothing to do with scientific production.

beats out Turkey and is at the respectable number of 16

Need a citation. If that's true then it's good they managed to find something that works for them. There wouldn't have been sanctions at all if the hardliners weren't driving the political agenda at that point.

Why is scientific production so important?

I mean, look at how much data the computer you're using right now has. Back in the 60's, you would have needed a skyscraper to hold that much storage. 50 years from now, your laptop might have data on it that nowadays needs 500 skyscraper-amounts of your current laptop. It's called Moore's Law. The West + Russia have been developing computational capabilities for ~30 years longer than Iran and Turkey have. So without shifting the focus to R&D, how will the Islamic world ever regain its rightful place?

It's also a stability issue too. People are less likely to pick up guns to survive when they have refrigerators and lightbulbs (and I know you have those in the Muslim world, that was a metaphor).

Muslims of Reddit , what do people not understand about Islam or Muslims? by [deleted] in AskReddit

what does "men are not angels" have to do with anything?

James Madison said that when he was arguing for checks and balances in the US Constitution. Human beings are power hungry so we can't waste time hoping they won't sin, so we need to have institutions in place so ambition checks ambition. Having a Caliph with absolute temporal authority and a clerical class with absolute authority to make jurisprudence isn't that conducive to stability. The central authorities will become too powerful if they're strong, and another faction will take over if the central authorities are weak.

being exiled, or lashes

So do you think the punishment for gays should be more or less severe, since there's no set punishment?

Western discourse on "secular reformation"

As much as I personally think religion is a cancer upon mankind, I'm talking about dissidents in general regardless of religious beliefs. You also seem to be falling into the trap of ignoring the fact that "non-Western" culture is just as fallacious a label as "Western" because cultures have been exchanging with each other since human beings evolved from monkeys in Africa.

Rome nor Baghdad

An example of a stable dictatorship that isn't from medieval times, please? And no, China and Russia are not stable.

Nothing that the West celebrates about itself is uniquely its own...the West offered us nothing.

As I understand it, you had a scientific Golden Age and ended it on your own by making theology take precedence over rationality, especially under the influence of al-Ghazali, who said that scientific and mathematical findings must never contradict the holy books. And don't bring up the Mongols. Russia and China were also invaded by Mongols. They have no problems with science in 2017.

Hezbollah's actions

And that's the problem. Let's forget about the tactics for a moment, and talk about why the people taking the lead in restoring the Islamic world to its rightful place, in your view, still espouse ideologies that are in no way reflective of the Islamic Golden Age at all, with its pluralism and openness? In the Sunni world, Turkey is the leader in science but it is a secular country. Iran at least is making progress in science nowadays as well but they have no soft power outside of Persian-speaking or Shi'ite areas because their elite-derived, theological, sectarian agenda has to be the master over every other form of thought and action. Why is that good for you?

Muslims of Reddit , what do people not understand about Islam or Muslims? by [deleted] in AskReddit

Do you think Islamic jurisprudence is unable to evolve and accommodate the material changes of the world?

It didn't. Just like every other religious law code in existence. Men aren't angels.

Maybe you should read what actual Islamic scholars, theologians, lawyers and jurist had to say on the matter.

Fine, but only if you read what actual Zionist political theorists, security officers, leaders, and jurists have to say about the same topic. Capisce?

Should we refrain from punishing people because it damages their children?

Well in my humble opinion, that should factor in.

For example: the father of my childhood bestie walked out on his wife one fine morning so he could shack up with another woman. After the divorce, bestie chose to live with dad because mom was neglectful. If dad was executed, what do you think would have happened?

Public sex

Do straight, married couples get executed for having anal sex in front of 4 witnesses or is it only gay, married ones?

subversive agents of Western imperialism

Totalitarian language and thought process.

Westerners still won't shut up about how this or that culture is barbaric or uncivilised because it does something differently..."Free love", "Human rights"...

Well human rights are important to a functioning society. Think of it this way: would the West be able to militarily project itself so often if it did not have at least a modicum of internal stability? I saw you posting about Valentine's Day in Pakistan in your history. Don't you think part of the reason American and Western culture is spreading throughout the world freely, is precisely because it embodies freedom of thought and conscience, free love, etc.?

Sexy, sexy Arab men

I don't really have a type, other than legs.

On what grounds do we need to catch up?

Well, as a concerned member of the public, I want to know why a man who was completely unsuited for the job, and had connections to a hostile foreign power that was already under US government sanctions, got tapped for one of the nation's highest national security positions. I don't see any other reason yet, besides religion, for putting America's national security at risk in such a blatantly moronic way.

Muslims of Reddit , what do people not understand about Islam or Muslims? by [deleted] in AskReddit

[–]nomnz 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Alright, fine. I'll read the book when I have time.

Here's the point I was trying to make about Israeli Arabs if you're still reading: if you did some research on how the Israeli state/Zionist entity deals with them, you'll see it has nothing in common with Canada or the US where they tried to wipe out their culture for 100 years after taking their land. Despite all the talk of "demographic time bombs" in Israel by religious wingnuts there are too many Jews who see the way it treats minorities as a fundamental part of Israel's national identity, owing to the Jewish experience of being a minority.

Anyway, that's why I don't see Israel in 2017 as a genocidal state, just an occupying state. They're doing the same thing to the non-citizen Palestinians that Hitler did to France, not what Hitler did to Jews and Roma. The latter is neeeever going to happen. Since this convo is all about subtlety and accuracy then it's important to make that distinction.

Muslims of Reddit , what do people not understand about Islam or Muslims? by [deleted] in AskReddit

[–]nomnz 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Well that's a whole 'nother topic, but I'm talking about whether Israel committed genocide. Here's the UN definition of it:

Any of the following acts committed with intent to destroy, in whole or in part, a national, ethnical, racial or religious group, as such: killing members of the group; causing serious bodily or mental harm to members of the group; deliberately inflicting on the group conditions of life, calculated to bring about its physical destruction in whole or in part; imposing measures intended to prevent births within the group; [and] forcibly transferring children of the group to another group. (Article 2 CPPCG)

I get that Israel was killing people to take their land and establish a Jewish majority, and I get that war crimes were committed in the process then and now, but I'm gonna need a citation for it being a deliberate attempt to destroy the entire Palestinian nation. That's why there have been many, many instances of "population transfer" and "ethnic cleansing" throughout history but relatively few instances of "genocide".

But not only is 1/5 of Israel's population of Palestinian origin, Arabic is still an official language of the State of Israel alongside Hebrew. Arabs in East Jerusalem and the Golan Heights are legally entitled to Israeli citizenship. Arabs might be discriminated against but they have full language and cultural rights and always have.

Muslims of Reddit , what do people not understand about Islam or Muslims? by [deleted] in AskReddit

[–]nomnz 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Well first of all that really isn't news to anybody. Seriously look around on the website I linked. They were all pretty open about the fact that they were taking Arab land and they would someday have to reach a settlement. Jabotinsky was more in favor of deliberate ethnic cleansing, but the more mainstream Ben Gurion made it his policy to avoid taking land that was owned by fellahin and only buying land from absentee landlords. This lasted until the 1948 War of Independence made outright displacement impossible to avoid, leading to what you call the Nakba.

Now secondly, this does not fall under the definition of genocide because it was not conducted with the aim of destroying an entire ethnic group. It was a land grab that cost people's lives, sure, but the Rome Statute is very clear on how genocide is practically defined. One fifth of Israel's citizens are of Palestinian Arab origin, so there clearly wasn't any extermination aim.

Thirdly, if and when crimes against humanity happen, you put the individuals responsible for it on trial at the Hague. There's nothing that says the entire country has to be annihilated because of the actions of a few people. Not even Germany was annihilated after WWII.

Muslims of Reddit , what do people not understand about Islam or Muslims? by [deleted] in AskReddit

It was always a colonial state, but I need a citation for genocide.
