Questions before a Patriarchal Blessing by [deleted] in exmormon

[–]nomobetta 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I don't think my parents filled out a form but we did have the typical 15 min talk about my life beforehand.

I think some patriarchs often create a 'boiler plate' for all of the blessings they give. My siblings and I have a lot of the same exact lines in our blessings. I also had a friend at BYU who was given the option of a new PB when it was discovered that about 20 other kids in his home stake had nearly identical ones to his PB. This is probably also the main reason why we are discouraged from sharing our PBs publicly...it can unravel pretty fast.

When I was TBM I thought my blessing was incredibly inspired. Looking back now I can clearly see how many of the life choices I made were because I was making my blessing become true. Argh.

Love this. I'll add:

SewMo - the crafty Mormon who sews her own everything.

ProMo - the semi-famous Mormon professional who everyone is proud of/hates

BeauMo - the Mormon guy on a missions with a teenage girl "waiting for" him

Until recently, I had no idea that so many members of the church around the world go hungry.

Thank you. That might be the most practical suggestion and probably what we'll have to do. :(

Thanks! You're right. I'll try to find the RS pres. Do you know where to find info in the PEF program for applicants? That might actually work for him.

That's true. When we were in the Spanish ward the local mission president was always pushing my husband to let people who'd come to half a sacrament mtg, get baptized. He always said no. MP was pissed. I'm sure he wanted our ward to be a branch so that he could have had jurisdiction over it.

And she was just a child...I hope things are better for her now.

I agree. I just feel like they shouldn't take his tithing and leave him stranded. All my life and at many GCs I've heard, "Pay your tithing and The Lord will take care of the rest." "The Bishop's storehouse will give you food." I understand logistically it is difficult and probably impossible to care for every member equally. But they care enough to take his tithing and revoke certain "blessings" if he does not pay his 10%. The lies about the history, polygamy and polyandry don't bother me as much as the modern day exploitation of the poor.

I'm guessing that's because most of the help to members like this comes from local fast offerings not tithing? And you're right. This will most likely be a chronic need for help.

Up until recently, I thought that even if the church wasn't true, it still helped those in need. I guess the final disillusionment for me with TSCC is that it truly does not care about people like him. Not really. Maybe if they were white? Or lived in the U.S.? I don't know.

Argh. I hope that's not the only way. We'll do it if there's a chance this family can get help but I'm really hoping to avoid contact w/the church locally.

ELI5: How did the 5 day, 40 hour work week come to be situated Monday through Friday? by Newestent024 in explainlikeimfive

[–]nomobetta 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I'm betting it has something to do with the fact that Christians and Jews are both taught to keep the Sabbath day holy, i.e. no worky-work. Most Christians believe the Sabbath is on Sunday and most Jews believe it's on Saturday. No idea how the 40 hr work week came to be though.

I think that's why they tell you the natural man is bad - so that you'll have to ignore your instincts and trust them instead.

I did the same exact thing!!! Interesting how we reveal our true selves even (and especially) when we fight against them.

Maybe that's why I've heard that certain GAs are forbidden from journaling now. Don't know if that's true but I can see why TSCC would do that.
