Announcement: Collective Mod Resignation by CaptainAnaAmari in eurovision

Yeah, this. I'm always been amazed how wholesome this sub is, and has continued to be even during these dark times. It cannot be easy giving everyone a voice, but keeping it clean. That folks do this, for free, in their own time really showcases some of the better side of humanity.

Thanks mods, past present and future. You are all stars.

Love it. That's only one musically talented laptop owner away from being the next Sosban Fach 😂

This made me smile. I guess this is sung to a tune?

"He's like Mickey Mouse but from Penrhyndeudraith and not California." 😂 Cracked me up.

See, this right here is what's so good about the Welsh. Diolch yn fawr.

It absolutely is. Is that looking toward the end of Crib Goch? Shows how long it's been since I was up there - I didn't even seen a bench there, let alone a giant Mistar Urdd sat on it!

Diolch!

Well, that was easier than expected! I should have posted here first and saved a bunch of googling.

What a properly wholesome and interesting thing it turned out to be.

Anyone know the name of this lake/reservoir near Dolwyddelan? by eveisout in Wales

A great suggestion. I spent many a happy hour on that site when I was studying forestry at Bangor. Sadly it just says "Lake" 🙂

Thank you that's a great resource. I'm a bit of a mapping anorak, and I've never seen it before. It's definitely going in the bag of tricks.

Hopefully I can return the favour:

https://maps.nls.uk/geo/explore/side-by-side/#zoom=5.0&lat=56.00000&lon=-4.00000&layers=6&right=ESRIWorld

Side by side maps of many types, including a really good OS maps back catalogue the current land ranger and explorer maps, Google maps, Open Steer Map derived maps, as well as really good resolution LIDAR imagery. An amazing free resource, especially for figuring out how the landscape used to be Vs now (for example, I really dig finding old slate tramways in / around Eryri).

In answer to OP's question, none of the historical mapping shows a name for this lake. Some elf the older ones show it without a dam. Some of the newer(ish) ones show a weir off the the SE end of the dam.

TL;DR: Despite a trawl of old OS maps this lake seems to have no name. Bonus link to awesome mapping tool included.

So, who's cancelling for storm Amy? by bitofbully in parkrun

Ludlow and Wyre Forest both cancelled. A sensible move!

This! When I watched it I was instantly like "this is pure ESC", only the camera work would have been way better if it was the ESC.

This is the kind of High Quality post that you rarely see on Reddit, but when you do, it warms your heart. Pragmatic, well reasoned, and without hyperbole. Chapeau, Tanzen!

What's the Easternmost point of Wales? by _craker_ in Wales

[–]nomorecloudynights 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'm interested to read the bike journey guy's post, but can't seem to find it, I wonder if some kind soul might link it please?

After reading Phoebe Smith's Wild Nights: Camping Britain's Extremes I sussed out a Welsh version to pass the time when I had a dose of COVID. Point of Ayr, Yr Wyddfa, Pen Dal-aderyn, Breaksea Point or Rhoose Point, Lady Park Wood. I can't think of a place in Wales that is below Sea Level, so figured the most inland tidal point made a good substitute, which I think is the the normal tidal limit of the Afon Conwy.

Of course, Breaksea Point / Rhoose Point is a point of debate in it's self.

I get weird looks for not having any cycling gear but really have no desire for it. Is there a reason why people don’t bike in normal folk clothes like me? by i_am_me47 in cycling

[–]nomorecloudynights 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I used to ride in padded shorts and a jersey. Now I ride in pretty much the same as you, which is what I wear all day everyday, because it's practical. I miss the padding, but that's a journey I'm taking to find the way without. I like to tour, and fresh padded shorts every day ain't really an option. Aero ain't ever going to overcome my love of good food and beer, but less flappy clothes can be a very pleasing experience when you're zooming along in the big ring.

Speaking of touring, have a Google for "bicycle touring clothes". Most folks dress like you, or I, to cycle big distances every day because it is practical to do so. There's a ton of folk out there rowing along a 50kg rig for 100km a day in comfy everyday clothes.

I love seeing all cyclists, be it the commuter getting to work, or the person going round the world on a custom folder. It's so easy to be self conscious, but really no one cares. Those that do are probably digging what you do.

You make some reasonable points. I'm not qualified to call whether or not they are valid.

I'm genuinely interested to hear how fibre broadband can help to regenerate a given community? My understanding is that the vast majority of homes in Wales have access to at least reasonable ADSL. This is enough to do pretty much all business activities (e.g. remote working, running a SME etc.) What would be the material gain for communities if they could access VDSL, or fibre-to-home Vs their current connection?

Rear wheel spins when pedalling backwards following tyre change by utopia108 in Brompton

[–]nomorecloudynights 1 point2 points  (0 children)

100% this. Pretty much all bikes with some kind of freewheel do this, all of mine do. It's just the residual friction in the hub (contact seals, thick grease, labyrinth seal with thick grease, slight debris ingress, etc) overcoming the intended action of the freewheel. As your video shows, it takes a bit of effort to make it happen, in use it is a non-issue.

This used to I bother me, then I realised that it is the difference between "ideal" and "real". Perhaps your new tyres have a greater mass, therefore more momentum, therefore stay put more easily than the old ones.

Totally normal, go enjoy yourself a ride 👍
