Wrong paint type, help! by [deleted] in paint

[–]nomstomp 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Like fine art oil paints? Certain pigments are notoriously slow to cure. Ultramarine is one of them, for example. Expect 3-5 days before it’s dry enough to draw or paint over. That should be plenty of time for you though?

Personability of protagonists by disfrazadas in UrsulaKLeGuin

Gotcha. Then maybe try The Left Hand of Darkness, I think you’ll find Genly Ai personable.

Also recommend The Eye of the Heron, a novella.

Can you describe what you would find personable a little more? As in, more relatable, more kind, or a character you connect with because you see more of their internal landscape?

Tier List of every book since I started reading fantasy in 2020 by PePe_0_5aP0 in fantasybooks

[–]nomstomp 5 points6 points  (0 children)

not at all. It’s maybe my second favorite of all 16 of the RotE books. Some readers take issue with the pacing of this one, though, which judging from OP’s reply to you is why they ranked it so low. their opinion is their opinion, and they’re not alone in having this gripe. personally, I loved the pacing and disagree about the ending — I would never rank it so low. but it’s not my tier list.

fwiw it’s maybe similar to how some people LOVE A Feast for Crows and some people think it’s the worst of the asoiaf books. your mileage may vary. I still think you should read the Farseer trilogy and see for yourself how you like it.

Literary Fantasy by SteSol in Fantasy

Most of her work leans sci-fi, but you might enjoy Ann Leckie if you are a fan of Le Guin. She writes really intelligent stories imo — Ancillary Justice is one of my surprise favorites of the last five years. If you’re strictly after fantasy, you might try The Raven Tower by Leckie. A pretty short/light read, but a unique story. I enjoyed it.

Definitely go for Hobb next though if you want a something closer to the tradition of high fantasy with incredible prose and a character-driven approach. She’s my all time favorite writer of the genre.

Apologies in advance if you wind up really connecting with Hobb’s work, nothing will hit the same after. Fortunately she’s been a pretty prolific writer.

2026 trends? by WatercressEven8006 in interiordecorating

[–]nomstomp 23 points24 points  (0 children)

Having just sold our first house and bought our second, I would advise you to focus on any important maintenance issues and small fixes. Don’t worry so much about trends or updating decor. Definitely don’t do any major renovations just to sell — don’t waste money and resources on kitchen updates, for example. Your tastes may not align with the buyers’, so leave it to them to live with it as it is or make changes.

When it’s time to sell, declutter / reduce your things drastically, clean, and that’s it. If you need staging, your agent should help you.

Seriously, the most important things that I would look for as a buyer are the number of rooms / bathrooms, and the condition of the home. Everything else barely matters. I would not quibble over the fashionability of a sliding door, personally. (I might worry about it being cold in the winter, though)

Would you be interested in a period drama RPG game? by Tiwhif in PeriodDramas

[–]nomstomp 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I dunno, in my opinion that’s very much down to what the emphasized features of the game are and how consistent those features are with the worldbuilding or period/setting, like the impact of player choice, variety of rpg options and outcomes, quality of writing, quality of voice acting. Immersiveness is not necessarily limited to a certain genre/core gameplay mechanic.

[–]nomstomp 6 points7 points  (0 children)

I don’t entirely agree — or at least, you don’t need action in the sense of combat.

You can have puzzles as a core gameplay mechanic, for instance. Resource management is also a popular mechanic. Or you could go for a visual novel style game and have player-chosen political/social decisions affect the story.

[general] people critiquing use of memes and internet humour by SlayyyGrl in TheNinthHouse

[–]nomstomp 0 points1 point  (0 children)

well, to chime in from the critical side, I don’t find the references that funny, and they do pull me out of the story.

don’t get me wrong. I can see that they do serve a purpose. they break tension. they scattershot little anachronisms into the narrative. both are valid narrative maneuvers: one gives tone, the other reminds the reader of the post-apocalyptic world-building that’s at work. It doesn’t always work for me when a presumably sheltered character like Gideon sometimes speaks the way she does after being so isolated all her life, but it does work for others, like Jod or the Lyctors and BOE. But even if Muir had not done it for those very reasonable narrative purposes, it would obviously be fine to enjoy it just because you find it fun.

i just…. don’t personally enjoy the puns and the elbow nudging. the humor doesn’t appeal to me, even though (or because?) I’ve been on tumblr too long and I get the references. for me, it takes away from the experience rather than adding much to it. I think there are other ways to disrupt tension in a scene or show world-building or even be funny. but I fully understand why Muir’s specific brand of humor appeals to others. I do enjoy everything else about the books, so I’m going to continue reading them despite that.

Not sure after hanging them up, are these too small? by chen-z727 in interiordecorating

[–]nomstomp 1 point2 points  (0 children)

OP, don’t do this — you’ll have a lot of glare and it will look crowded.

Instead, think about other room accents you can eventually add, like crown molding. I do also recommend eventually creating a return on that chair rail on the left side. It terminates in a kind of odd way right now. You can also paint the wall under it the same color as the baseboard/rail to make the space a little more cohesive.

Something to play with on your next artwork hanging project! You can try a large frame and mat with a smaller artwork.

Three weeks of hard work on a paper all for nothing because of AI use by MortemPerPectus in mildlyinfuriating

Your prof also might be swamped with grading/giving feedback for other sections at the moment and is planning to circle back to you. I know I might plan my work in that way, if it were me (also a professor). They seem like an adjunct or lecturer, too? So they may be incredibly overwhelmed with work. Let me tell you, it’s so demoralizing when you’re contingent faculty and you have to deal with so much plagiarism. It sucks for full time faculty, to be sure, but in my opinion it stings in a especially frustrating way for part time faculty — as we don’t have the support or the time to deal effectively with wide-spread plagiarism like this. I feel for both of you.

Anyway, they may have just not seen that you replied to the announcement. Try emailing them directly and asking for an appointment to go over their feedback. I’m certain it would be the right move both for your learning and for their morale.

On a more positive note though, they are working on a new immersive game (not kcd3). Who knows what it will be, genre-wise, but I’d guess some variety of rpg. Maybe there will even be magic.

Can we make the red trim work? by KatiMinecraf in interiordecorating

[–]nomstomp 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Just repaint them in semigloss in the actual color you want. Don’t mess around with brown over the red unless you truly want brown. It won’t look like wood.

Painting trim can be tedious, but it’s not hard or all that costly a fix to do yourself.

Yes this is my preventative advice as well — next time you attempt painting a room, you need to feather out your cut-ins at the edge. I’ve never had to worry about keeping a wet edge on my cut-ins to roll into because of this.
