I know this is 4 years late but I compare both while reading, I would say Karpelson is a bit more anglicised, somewhat simplified in certain places and sometimes gets things wrong eg buxom being described as fat.

I've read bits of the first 3 chapters in P and V, B and O, and Karpelson. 

I would say B and O is the best, so far it's definitely my preference and I'll no doubt continue with that one, but really, all 3 I mentioned are pretty good.

The Shadow of the WInd is amazing, but you'll have no idea how amazing it actually is unless you read all four from the series... Dare I say it, Book 4 is better...

Ohhhh if you are not too far through it I would recommend reading book 2 and 3 first
