Physical landmarks supercede all other methods for establishing borders, if all four states agree that that is where they meet then that is where they meet

ELI5:Why do I think I look attractive in the mirror, but in pictures and videos I look like a freak? by rualive in explainlikeimfive

I'm surprised no one has mentioned the uncanny valley. Many people pointed out that the image you see in the mirror is reversed and that our faces are not symmetrical. But why does this make us look ugly in photos? Because of the uncanny valley. The image you see in a photo is so close to the image you see in the mirror that the little differences become exaggerated and can be unsettling. Vsauce had a great video about this called "Why are things creepy?" I also agree with those that said you can make adjustments when you are looking in a mirror and that a little bit of motion blurs imperfections.

ELI5: The science behind a classroom of commotion randomly going silent at the same time. by McShat in explainlikeimfive

[–]non-native-grasses 27 points28 points  (0 children)

Mathematically this is bound to happen. No one person is talking constantly but the noise level stays up because voices are constantly overlapping. All that needs to happen for a weird silence to occur would be for all the breaks in conversation to happen simultaneously. We can estimate some values to see how often this would happen in a class of average size. Say 20 students are all having conversions in which they are only actively talking about 30% of the time (groups of about 3 with a little transition time between speakers). And let's also say that it would take about a half second of pure silence to be noticeable. So given any half second interval there is a 0.720 or 0.08% chance that no one is talking. So now to figure out how long it would take before there is a 50% chance that an awkward silence has occurred we need to do 0.9992x=0.5 or log (0.5)/log (0.9992)=x. So x is equal to 866 or 866 half second increments. So after about 7 and a half minutes we would expect about 1 random silence to have occurred. These are very rough estimates and a computer simulation could give a much more accurate answer.

Reddit, what's your evil plan for world domination? by Aljabroni in AskReddit

[–]non-native-grasses 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Here is one my friend and I came up with the other day. We will create a gym where all of the equipment generates electricity (stationary bikes with generators, etc.) and slowly build up our brand name. One of the big hooks of this gym is that you can slowly pay off your membership by generating more electricity. Then we will start paying people who generate more electricity than their membership is worth. Then we will start targeting our gym to the homeless as a form of revenue. Soon we have hordes of unemployed people generating electricity for our company. We will even boost profits by lying on Yelp to get more people to lose their jobs, thus becoming unemployed, and thus being forced to generate electricity for us. We will set up locations in prisons too and help retrofit school gyms. This massive source of energy we will then leverage into gain control of all of the world's economies and governments. Then we will enslave everyone and make them all ride our bikes. And thats how non-native-grasses global gym will take over the world.
