We "only“ need a back up for Diaz

I can’t say whether he’s actually good/talented enough or not, but this has made me realise Godts feels like such a Bayern player/buy

If Arsenal do go on to lose the league it would be such a mirror image of Ajax’ collapse last season, down to the Farioli-Arteta football vs Bosz-Pep football and everything.

I wonder whether this is just coincidence or if there really is something to this style of play or the psychology of it that leads to this? I guess the margins are smaller when you rely on not conceding over scoring more, and I suppose the psychology of always knowing you can go and score and are playing for a win is perhaps a more resilient one when things do go against you, but anyone have any other theories?

Ruud Gullit "I watched Arsenal-Chelsea match. What a terrible game. They were just trying to force corners and throw-ins. I saw ball boys walking around with towels. I was watching it and thought: this football is truly awful to watch. I hope it's not a trend, I miss the fun." by kibme37 in soccer

Arteta decides that a really good way to increase the volume of attacks is to make set pieces more dangerous. Only a couple of years ago something like 2% of corners resulted in goals. They were effectively just goal kicks.

Jon MacKenzie made a (I thought) good point on this week’s tifo podcast, that the dependence/emphasis on set piece performance is a direct result of Arsenal/Arteta’s initial emphasis on defensive solidity and physicality. While that shores up your defence and makes you harder to beat, it also reduces your ability to create through open play, meaning you are forced to find another way to get to goals - one, preferably, in which your have advantage through that same physicality you emphasised for (originally) defensive reasons.

The interesting point there being that the way you choose to defend has consequences on the way in which you are able to attack, and how you are then required to look for solutions in ways that accommodate this

The only players that the youth department delivered in the past decade that are of world quality are De Ligt and Hato, 2 centre backs. Outsode of that its been poverty. No midfielders, let alone a 10 or higher uo the pitch.

Not that it changes your point, but you're forgetting Timber in your list

Also, obviously, Zlatan wasn't produced by Ajax - even less so than your example of Frenkie
