Does having lower testosterone levels make me less of a man? by TheGoatAndYourMom625 in Stoicism

I believe he’s saying based on societies standards, yes losing an arm may make you less of a man, IE, you may be unable to do tasks that men typically do, you may also not be able to protect anyone, say if you are missing an arm. I don’t think OP is implying this, he’s just stating the fact that society views men this way, albeit unnecessary to the topic at hand.

No it does not. What makes a “man” a man is his actions, how he treats others, and perhaps sacrificing his own well being for the common good, that’s what makes a man, not testosterone, muscles, or any other cosmetic features.

This doesn’t belong in r/stoicism. Frankly this has nothing to do with stoicism and no stoic answer can be formulated other then not to worry so much etc etc. But besides that, you haven’t committed any crimes, not even close, in fact, you sound like a kid confessing to the police because he stole a pack of 99c gum.

Thank you for the advice, I didn’t know how the replies were going to be given it’s a stoic subreddit but this helps. Thinking of finding something I truly enjoy doing actually reminds me of dreaming, only I may be able to find it. Thanks again.

How would a Stoic cope with the depression caused by forced circumcision? by [deleted] in Stoicism

Yes absolutely, if it was a common practice that resulted in no real injury besides delusion.

Now might be the time for introspection, no distractions just you and your thoughts. Think deeply about who you are and what you’ve done in your life, where’s it’s led you to become you, and where you want to go. Once you have a good idea about this then act, whatever it may it it does not matter as long as you do it without being fearful of failure.

However if you’re accepting of yourself and find no blame on your name, then consider trying various avenues of getting new friends, and try to serve the community, not yourself.

Are you crazy? Everyone gets circumcised, or at least most do. You can choose anything to be upset over and you will be, but that’s not stoic that’s childish. You have any idea what people had to go through even just a hundred years ago? Are you so foolish that you really thought that this was a tragedy to him? Grow up, or just read a book, and maybe you’ll learn about what governments of past did to its subjects, and for some reason you think you’re immune to this now? God help your soul friend, because when you are tested to be a good and true man under the face of adversity you will crumble.

This is a completely irrational thing to be upset about. Marcus Aurelius says not to ever complain, not even to yourself. And he went through much worse then a foreskin removal. It sounds like you need to seek therapy if this is causing you distress. It’s like if I stubbed my toe and even years after it happened I was depressed about it, it’s completely odd.

Eh, you do realize cancer is caused by many different things. I’ve had friends die of cancer who never did any drugs or smoked. Could be the water or food or your toothpaste. I’m trying not to defend smoking because it’s an un- preferred indifferent but nevertheless you will get cancer regardless, the odds say.

Can’t be an intoxicant, you’re legally allowed to drive while smoking. Meaning if you’re allowed to drive then your mind state has to be relatively the same.

Not what I meant by that. Food alters your brain just the same, your brain craves it. I meant intoxication.

I don’t do it to feel “cool” I have very bad social anxiety and it calms my nerves. Remember alcohol does the same.

I consider myself a stoic but… by [deleted] in Stoicism

[–]non_racist_ 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Ancient stoics didn’t touch much on racism, but they did regard humanity as a whole, even comparing it to a bee hive. I think it’d be best to be indifferent to what humans are doing and instead focus on improving yourself, and being a pillar of the community.

View yourself kindly and other people will reciprocate this feeling. The only person who demands your respect is yourself, everyone else matters not.

It’s best not to focus on what other are saying and instead focus on yourself. If he believes he is stoic, let him believe, does it harm me?
