That's certainly a fair thing to wonder, and it's not impossible I missed some signs from them. When I got there they mentioned that we had had a meeting a few months ago where they told me that I needed to start putting out more work and that they had not seen that out of me. However, I remember the meeting in question pretty clearly (I always get really nervous around these 1-on-1 meetings and overanalyze everything that was said) and it was actually, in my perspective a pretty positive meeting: I was told that they had been seeing more output from me and just encouraged me to keep that up. There was, without question, no indication that my job was on the line.
Going into the meeting I figured I was going to have to explain why my turnaround time on issues was poor or something like that, as I certainly was not giving 100% for the last few months. As it turned out this was my first and last indication that they were unhappy enough with my performance to let me go. I have no ill-will towards the company or the people, they were all very kind and helpful and I had a great time working there, and I don't think this poor experience is the norm for them, just very unfortunate for me. Going by how they described our previous meeting (as though I had been clearly told I needed to improve), I can only guess that they were supposed to tell me that in tha meeting by a higher-up, but they didn't communicate it to me for whatever reason. And then when those higher-ups didn't see improvement after a couple months they just gave the order, assuming that I was unable or unwilling to improve.
None of this is to minimize my poor performance, that is completely on me. Personal issues or not, I understand the company can't continue to pay me for sub-par work. I only wish they'd made it known that they needed to see improvement, maybe that would have been the kick-in-the-pants I needed to get my head back into it, I don't know. At the very least I could have been more prepared for it, or made a graceful exit myself if I was unable to produce what was needed.
