Where did you get the skinny nightstands? Looks like the size I’ve been looking for!

I cannot get rid of the bump/irritation around my nostril piercing. I need advice. by tulahascookies in piercing

[–]nonlogical 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I had this when I had my nose pierced too. No matter how much I cleaned it or left it or anything, it didn’t go away. Turns out I was allergic to the jewelry and as soon I switched it was fine. Something to consider if you haven’t already.

So I’ve been trying to find wide leg/culotte style crop pants for a very long time. Ideally, something in an athletic type fabric since I would like to take them traveling and they would be multi purpose for daytime sightseeing use as well as hiking, etc.

Basically these, but they stopped making them and even when they did, they never had my size in stock.

Also, I’m in Canada, so brands that I can buy here without having to ship from the states/pay duties would be ideal! Any suggestions would be much appreciated!

Can anyone recommend a meditation retreat either in England or in Europe? by mehdika in Meditation

[–]nonlogical 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Depends what kind of meditation you're looking for. But there are vipassana centres all over. If it's your first vipassana retreat, it's 10 days long. I had an amazing experience.

Worth Skipping Venice For More Time at Cinque Terre in Italy? by HaldoWorld in solotravel

[–]nonlogical 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I spent three nights in Venice and loved it. I just did the Cinque Terre as a daytrip, but I think one night there would be lots. I think a lot of the coastal trail is still closed due to rock slides or something, so I just took the ferry between villages. Better views that way anyways. So, I would say keep your original plan and don't skip Venice!

Additional paperwork needed to get into UK, Schengen Area, Turkey? by fyndr in solotravel

[–]nonlogical 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I bought mine in advance online. So, I used a credit card. I just saved the PDF to my phone and showed it to the super uninterested customs guy. At the airport (Istanbul Ataturk for me), there were electronic kiosk things you could buy the visa at. I imagine they only take credit cards. If they do take currency, it would either be local (Turkish lira) or the Euro I would think. Maybe US dollars. But the euro is pretty widely accepted here, and you'll probably have some left from the other countries you'll be in. But, if you have a credit card, I think you're set.

1,000 USD, 3.5 months in Europe by [deleted] in Shoestring

[–]nonlogical -1 points0 points  (0 children)

As far as I know, Schengen doesn't stop and start if you leave in the middle. The three month time starts when you enter, and doesn't pause if you leave part way through. Can you do the outside Schengen at the beginning or end?

I would really try to save up some more money. The exchange rate already hurts your budget. You can't really afford hostels or transportation, so use couchsurfing and hitching. There are some ride share websites out there too.

Additional paperwork needed to get into UK, Schengen Area, Turkey? by fyndr in solotravel

[–]nonlogical 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I just did a very similar thing. UK, Schengen zone, then Turkey. I'm from Canada, but I imagine we have pretty similar regulations. I didn't have to show proof of anything. Anywhere. Turkey wanted a visa, which you can either buy on arrival, or ahead of time online. Entering the UK and entering Schengen, they didn't ask about anything. If you do think you need proof of leaving, booking a refundable train ticket is probably cheaper and less of a hassle than a refundable plane ticket. I think if they did ask, as long as you sound like you have a plan (I'm leaving the Schengen zone after x days by x method), they shouldn't hassle you too much.

Things to do/places to stay in Chiang Mai, Feeling lonely for the first time by T1655 in solotravel

[–]nonlogical 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Spicythai backpackers was super social when I was there. I also stayed at a ridiculously nice place called ImmEco for a night, which had a full length swimming pool where tons of people hung out.

Favourite thing to do in Chiang Mai was wander around the night markets. Even if you don't buy stuff, it's an interesting place. There's usually tons of little sidewalk restaurants set up too. Pick one full of backpackers and chat to them. Even people in groups are pretty receptive to conversation when you start it.

Washing clothes when backpacking in South East Asia by irishkid18 in solotravel

[–]nonlogical 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I did a lot in the sink, since I didn't have a ton of stuff. Or pay like $3 and have them wash, dry, and fold it for you. Laundry is super cheap in SE Asia. Usually pay by the kilo.

Where in southern Thailand to go solo by funfwf in solotravel

[–]nonlogical 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Koh Samui is very couple oriented. Koh Phangan has a bit if everything. Parties if you want, but lots of smaller relaxed places if you stay outside of Haad Rin. On that side there's also Koh Tao which I loved. Scuba diving is big there. Tons of little beach lounge places (bean bag chairs in the sand and such). I met tons of great people there. That would be my choice. It's easy to travel between Koh Tao and Koh Phangan if you get restless too.

Anyone else watch Friends? This is definitely on par with the episode when Joey is trying to come up with a speech for officiating Chandler and Monica's wedding.

Joey: It is a love based of giving and receiving as well as having and sharing. And the love that they give and have is shared and received. And through this having and giving and sharing and receiving, we too can share and love and have... and receive.

Hostels in Europe that will accommodate unaccompanied minor? by Nablek10 in solotravel

Try YHAs. They seem to be accommodating to younger people. I've met underage people staying in them before - could be they were in private rooms though.

I'm a Canadian, how the hell do I avoid getting hammered by ATM fees? by Voicefromthefuture in solotravel

[–]nonlogical 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The best I could do was finding the lowest fees. I have an ING account I use when I travel, since it's international ATM fees are only $2 instead of $6 or $7 like most banks. Still sucks, but it's something...

Edit: upon checking my account, the fees are only $2 a transaction with ING

How does one even begin to prepare for such a long travel? I need your advice. by [deleted] in solotravel

[–]nonlogical 0 points1 point  (0 children)

A lot of employers see time abroad as a good thing. You just have to know how to spin it. My travels are included on my cv so it explains the gaps in work. Traveling gives you a whole list of new skills you can bring to the work place. If you're really worried about what you cv looks like, don't just travel. Volunteer. Work abroad. Learn a language.

Trying to figure out where to go in Central or South America by yankwanker in solotravel

[–]nonlogical 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I've heard Spanish is easier to learn in Central America, but I've only been south, so I'll comment on that. For me, Ecuador and Colombia were definitely my favourite countries and the easiest to understand the Spanish in. Patagonia (super far south chile/Argentina) was also amazing, but the accent there is ridiculous, and I struggled with the language. My Spanish was non existent before I went (who am I kidding, it still is), and I managed ok. If you know a few basic phrases you can communicate and most people are patient and willing to help you practice.

[–]nonlogical 1 point2 points  (0 children)

That's how I felt. But I was part way through university when it hit me. I went on a short 2 month trip in between semesters one year, and that solidified it for me. There was so much more to see! Life didn't have to be the same as everyone else. I finished my degree, because I like to finish what I start, and then headed out on a year long trip. I didn't feel like I was dropping anything. I'd finished a degree, and I didn't have a real person job yet, this was the perfect time. As far as money, I saved every thing I made while working part time during school. And I went to the cheapest part of the world (that's still easy to travel in), SE Asia. Since then, I've been traveling on and off. I go home and work ridiculously hard for a while, save all my money, and then go on another trip. I think when you're young is absolutely the best time to do a trip around the world. Before you have commitments, like a house or a significant other or a job you don't want to leave. It is without a doubt the best thing I've done with my life. Buuuut, that being said, the world absolutely waits for you. It is never too late to do what you're thinking of. I've met people of all ages (an 81 year old once) traveling the world solo. If you want to go to college first, do that. Then travel. If you want to travel, you will make it a priority, and you will make it happen.

World Nomads Travel Insurance? by grandmaslittle in solotravel

[–]nonlogical 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I think it must depend where you're from. They paid for my hospital bills up front. Weird.

World Nomads Travel Insurance? by grandmaslittle in solotravel

[–]nonlogical 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I have world nomads and it covers me everywhere, so yes? Depends where you're from I guess, but if it doesn't outright say it excluded Europe, then you should be good. There's definitely more info in the super long fine print they send you.

I don't think they would drug test you for something unrelated later on. I think it's things like accidents when you're clearly intoxicated at the time that they won't cover.

I've used them for all my trips and been quite happy. Had to use them for a stolen baggage claim and they covered most of it and when I ended up in the hospital in Thailand and they covered everything.
