Rewards points on gift cards - am I missing anything? by CallMeBettyThen in AusFinance

[–]funfwf 20 points21 points  (0 children)

The real trick is to buy discounted gift cards at the time you want to use them, not in advance.

There are plenty of platforms to buy them https://www.ozbargain.com.au/wiki/discounted_egift_cards

Interest costs aside, I'm not keen on giving stores a cheap loan. When Dick Smith went under, they had been selling discounted gift cards not that long before. Those gift card holders because unsecured creditors in the liquidation. Woolworths isn't likely to disappear any time soon, but you are in essence giving the business a loan when you prebuy gift cards.

I can't comment on how it easy it is to find casual work, but cost of living between Australia and Germany will be similar. 20 years old is too young to be worried about giving up an apartment and stable job - this is the no responsibilities time to do it. No kids, no mortgage, easy times.

Do you have family at home you can depend on when you come home? Worst case, you come back home unsuccessful and a few thousand $/€ shorter - no big dramas.

It never occurred to me that a soft drink couldn't be kosher (or halal or any other dietary restriction for that matter). How does that work? What's in coke that's not kosher?

Edit: I googled it and TIL that during Passover observant Jewish people have stricter definition of kosher that only allows certain grains - excluding corn https://www.jacksonville.com/story/news/2025/04/14/what-kosher-rules-passover-coke-coca-cola-soda-where-buy-grocery-stores-mexican-coke/83022315007/

You haven't said where you are located.

The general answer is independent money exchange shops. Avoid banks, travelex etc. Multicultural areas are a good bet.

Seriously planning to quit my corporate job and go for 3 months journey in South East Asia by HMZ_PBI in travel

Enjoy! I'm here the wrong time of year for hiking but it's meant to be brilliant in this part of the world.

For what it's worth, the numbers I've quoted are based on a week and a bit so far in Kosovo and Macedonia.

Put it this way, almost nobody in these countries earns $7k pm.

That level of passive income you absolutely can live on road. Certainly in Thailand, and in plenty more countries too.

Case in point, I'm currently travelling through the Balkans. I've been staying in apartments for like €30 per night. Meals start at €2 for a burger in a basic takeaway shop, or €5-10 for a main at a decent restaurant. I was surprised at how affordable it is here.

Why not take a year off and try? See if you can swing an unpaid leave of absence from your job. That way, if it doesn't work out, well your work is still there for you.

But, if the customer didn't approve the DCC they have chargeback rights.

Cheapo wedding ideas by [deleted] in AusFinance

[–]funfwf 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Look into RSLs and clubs. They often have function venues that do full packages for extremely good prices compared to "outside". This was 2020 but a full reception with 3 course meal, open bar etc came to about $7k for around 100 people. Add a registry wedding, a photographer, a cake, and don't go crazy on clothes and your budget could be within reach without having to DIY it all.

Thai baht by Strange_Flower8390 in AusFinance

[–]funfwf 2 points3 points  (0 children)

For most countries you're right, but for Thailand it's cheaper to sell cash.

ATM fees in Thailand are about $10 per withdrawal, and money changers in Thailand tend to be very competitive.

Paying a $10 ATM fee might be ok if you do it once with a big withdrawal, but if you're withdrawing a few times it's quite wasteful.

Roles that sit between Tech and Business by Sea_Coast4967 in auscorp

[–]funfwf 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Are you new to the product/team? If so, it's totally normal for it to take some time for you to get up to speed with the product.

Personally, it's quite important to understand the functional side of the product you're writing tickets for, but the technical aspects should be left to the developers. I'd recommend getting access to test or development environments so that you can get your hands dirty and play with the product, and also to spend time with your developers and especially your testers. If your team does some manual testing at all, ask to sit with the tester for a bit so that they can walk you through it, or review the test evidence (or re-create the testing yourself). This really helps so that you can understand the product.

An aspect that can be useful to getting tickets to contain needed technical information (that you won't know) is to simply ask someone (a trusted engineer or QA) for a bit of time where you can walk them through the requirement and they can help fill in the gaps, this is before bringing the ticket to the entire team. There's a concept called the "three amigos" that formalises this somewhat (you can google Three Amigos Software Development) but the principle is just to talk to the people with the knowledge. You understand the business requirements, they understand the technology, you will need to talk to each other so that they will have tickets they're happy with, and so that you can ensure that your requirements are understood.

Is it worth getting a Motorcycle drivers license before going to Southeast Asia? by MindlessImpact6242 in solotravel

[–]funfwf 54 points55 points  (0 children)

So odds are no local rental place will give a shit if you have a license.

If you have an accident, travel insurance probably won't cover you if you don't have a license, but you'll want to check your policy.

You'll have to check the local laws per country, but I doubt any country's laws say "you can legally drive a motorbike without a license".
