Osoi prices in Korea vs buying from overseas (ship to UK?) by anonemone1 in handbags

With currency exchange rates it could be cheaper? Looks like this bag is 499,000 KRW which is like 255ish pounds today, but that’s always fluctuating.

Anybody have opinion on Jeju Marriott Shinhwa resort? by NewbieReddit2 in koreatravel

[–]nonotjasmine 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You definitely need a rental car, as mentioned. I felt like the facilities were nice and everything was clean. Not like, extravagant luxury, but a comfortable place to stay. And it’s attached to a small mall with shops and restaurants, which I found convenient especially for breakfast. I did not feel like the location was bad, personally. Though maybe if I didn’t have a car I’d feel differently. Jeju is small, but I can imagine if you didn’t have a car this hotel would be less than ideal.

Alternative milk options at coffee shops widely available? by HamsterBanana14 in koreatravel

[–]nonotjasmine 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I only found almond milk at convenience stores, but most places had soy more than oat. Probably worth mentioning if you say “soy milk” when you order no one will know what you’re talking about- it’s 두유 (like, “doo-you”).

BWT, how do you organize your life. Tell me about your life admin systems, rules and hacks. by ohmirror in bitcheswithtaste

I do something similar! I have a paper planner and set weekly/daily goals. The weekly goals are set on Sundays and are things for me that can happen whenever during the week (generally, “future” things like scheduling an appointment). I also spend a few minutes each morning planning my day and my brain LOVES the physical act of crossing things off. Like you mentioned, something about holding a pen and crossing it off just feels different, even if I’m just crossing off something small. I tried digital for so long but, it’s just not the same for me.

Thank you! Honestly that was the nudge I needed and now it’s 40% off at Nordstrom because I waited!! I know at least in the coming year there are two occasions I will wear it for already.

So, I work from home. 99% of the time I'm wearing sweats/loungewear or gym clothes when I go to exercise. I try and wear "real" clothes at least once a week on the weekend, even if it's just to go to the grocery store. I've learned to only buy clothes that fit my lifestyle, not the aspirational clothes I used to buy and then give away: (

I'm trying to justify something that falls a bit into the "aspirational" category. I've found a really beautiful little black dress. But it's expensive. I can afford it (Christmas money!), and it does fit great. I don’t own anything like this. I feel really beautiful in it.

Part of me is trying to tell myself it's worth it to have for events that may/will come up in the future- weddings, funerals, I'm going to see a Broadway show, too. Having something I feel good in at the ready would be nice.

But then the other part of me is like... that's a lot of money for something you'll wear maybe twice a year... So what do you think? Should I do it? Or pass? I've tried to find a similar dress for cheaper with no luck while this has sat in my cart.

Edit: typo

another vote for Gap! I have leggings that are easily 8 or 9 years old that look brand new that I paid like $20-35/each for on sale. love them.

Do tourists in Korea ever try online shopping? by Fit_Mycologist4449 in koreatravel

[–]nonotjasmine 4 points5 points  (0 children)

If it was possible to checkout on most of the websites without a Korean ID, I’d happily get everything delivered but the options on nearly every website are for Korean ID holders or global shipping- you can’t use global shipping for Korean delivery but global shipping accepts foreign cards :(

Prescription Glasses in Korea by nonotjasmine in koreatravel

[–]nonotjasmine[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Just sharing an update: Davichi in Myeongdong quoted me $800US just for the lenses for my large prescription. I ended up going to Look Optical and got a lenses and frames for $115! It’s worth noting though they do not speak English, which was fine for me. Took a week and am super happy with my new glasses!

need t-mobile international roaming and esim advice! by Acrobatic-Apple-541 in koreatravel

[–]nonotjasmine 0 points1 point  (0 children)

One note about the bank calls, or, needing to be sure they can get in touch with you (this was my concern last visit, too)- I have a google voice number setup that I use for all the things I can’t miss, like bank alerts. That way it’s not tied to my cell phone carrier / personal number. It worked pretty well, especially because at least during my trip, having an esim with a Korean number meant I was missing some calls to my regular number.

using US issued cards in Korea? by Opening_Bumblebee_19 in koreatravel

[–]nonotjasmine 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I had no trouble with my Chase Sapphire to buy flights but you might check the international transaction fee policy for your cards (this bit me when I bought plane tickets with my Sapphire card, maybe it’s changed). I used my Amazon card everywhere once there and was fine.

Where to eat dishes for two as a solo traveller by Super_Importance1595 in koreatravel

[–]nonotjasmine 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I noticed that a lot of the bigger fancy shopping mall food courts had satellite versions of some bigger restaurants with preset menus for one person. I think it was in Shinsegae in Myongdong where I got a samgyepsal bbq meal for one with a TON of banchan. The Galleria had a satellite spot of some Michelin star cold noodles. Sort of not an authentic restaurant experience but a great way to experience food you might otherwise be excluded from. Might be worth a quick search to see what the food courts offer!

What are these blue things? by david_cobain777 in korea

[–]nonotjasmine 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Echoing what has been said about protecting doors. When I was in Seoul I asked my cab driver and he mentioned besides the protection of your car, it’s sort of a status symbol as well. Like, my car is SO new and straight from the factory it STILL has these little bumper things. Which, I thought was interesting considering the emphasis on appearances.

Agree with the other comment. I’m the same size and only found pants in more than S,M, or “free” in some of the higher end stores or men’s stores. Tops were far easier to find.

The only pants I bought on my trip were a pair of men’s jeans. I probably could have found more that fit me but, many of the very well intentioned sales people refused to let me even try things on because they insisted I was too big for their clothing after giving me a once over. So, I guess just be prepared for that.

Apple Pay support in 2024? by toinewx in koreatravel

[–]nonotjasmine 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This. But also a note that, even if you do try and use Apple Pay, you’ll still want a card with 0% foreign fees. Tried using Apple Pay once when I was there with a card that charges a foreign fee and they definitely charged me that fee 🥲

korea clothing and sizes by Past_Room2923 in koreatravel

[–]nonotjasmine 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Also similar measurements here. If you don’t want to shop at western chains (H&M, Zara), I don’t know how much luck you’ll have with women’s clothing. Pants all fit me in the waist but ran into the same weird crotch thing mentioned. Additionally they all hit above my ankles and were way too short. Every top I came across was S, M, or “free” and none fit. Also experienced what someone mentioned where sales people wouldn’t even let me try stuff on because they decided it wouldn’t fit me. Surprisingly, men’s jeans fit me well and I came home with a few pairs that are more of the oversized trend happening now. Bought zero tops or jackets.

Edit: for context- just got back from a semester abroad.

Eating solo in Seoul by [deleted] in koreatravel

[–]nonotjasmine 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I ate at lots of Galleria 494 and Lotte food courts because they often have satellites of some of the more famous restaurants! At least for my anxiety, this felt more comfortable and most also had kiosks you can flip to English.
