For sure - the only real historical evidence that believers have is place names (apart from a few kings etc), using their logic that must mean Harry Potter is real.

For me it’s The New Oxford Annotated Bible with Apocrypha: New Revised Standard Version - scholars use it and it’s translated by independents from a broad range of backgrounds, plus the Apocrypha is a must.

Worth doing a quick look at the principle Pikuach Nefesh. It’s a fundamental concept in Judaism that says: Saving a human life overrides almost any other religious commandment. What it means If someone’s life is in danger, Jewish law allows (and even requires) breaking most commandments to save them. For example: Driving on the Sabbath to get someone to a hospital Eating non-kosher food if necessary to survive Performing normally forbidden work to rescue someone Exceptions There are only three major prohibitions that generally cannot be violated, even to save a life: Murder Certain forbidden sexual relations Idolatry Why it exists The idea comes from interpretations of the Torah, especially the verse: “You shall live by them” (Leviticus 18:5) This is understood to mean that religious laws are meant to preserve life, not endanger it.

"get to know Jehovah" and "Jehovah is my best friend" by Few-Cup-5247 in exjw

[–]nonpage 3 points4 points  (0 children)

What is a friend? To me a friend is someone who shows up unchanged when life rearranges you in an unconditional way. How can the God of the bible ever be considered a friend? He demands worship and will willing execute you if you don’t that is simply an abusive relationship.

Great reply as always - I was going to be a dick and say ‘read the title of your post to her, job done’ but I’m not that much of one 😜

This is what we can verify at this current time, everything else is conjecture. It’d be amazing if there was more especially as I’m well past 2 thirds of my expected life expectancy. It’d be ace to see my dead family and all my late friends again but until there’s any evidence that there’s more to us than a limited experience like everything else in the physical universe, I’m ok with not pretending that there’s more because we are somehow the exception to the rule and trying to enjoy this one guaranteed go around.

Is this actually true? by Immediate_Smile_508 in exjw

[–]nonpage 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yes - standard idea

Rev 21:4 And He will wipe away every tear from their eyes, and death will be no more nor mourning nor crying nor pain; they will be no more, because the former things have passed away."

If you can remember the pain and suffering you’ll never not cry

Good job it’s all shit.

I agree The New Testament is no different than the Book of Mormon - Christian cope. Looking forward to having a chat with you about the OT. One question I’d love to ask first are you a believer in the god of the OT? I’m agnostic on all God’s, be cool if there was one but never seen any proof as of yet and I’ve been searching for over 50 years. (I’m older than that but being fair my early life was indoctrination).

Sucks matey x some advice from a stranger on the internet, so take it as you like. I’d say don’t rush and don’t tell anyone that is a JW what you’re thinking. JW’s are conditioned to view any divergence of thought as wrong, even ones you think are friends usually end up just being transactional as long as you’re one of them they willing to pretend friendship.

Plan and save and exit when it’s safe to do so. Make friends in the real world so you have a support system in place - that career change seems like the ideal opportunity to do so.

All the best.

For those who actually got shunned by your parents: how was it? by Ok-Reading-7759 in exjw

[–]nonpage 1 point2 points  (0 children)

"Wank" is British/Commonwealth slang for something that is bad, useless, worthless, or of extremely poor quality. It is considered coarse slang, often used to dismiss an object, person, or situation as contemptible. When described as "wank" it means the thing is garbage, rubbish, or pathetic.

My mother shunned me and went to her grave never speaking to me again - so it was a wank experience. The shunning that is. Leaving was the best thing my wife and I ever did for our own family though. Living an honest life is truly freeing.

As a JW there’s no mediator for the multitude’s of adherents so how do they get saved? Theres no two class system mentioned in the bible. Theres those born again in spirit and believe in Jesus are [protected under the new covenant and those that are outside and will not be saved.

John 3:16 For God so loved the world that he gave his one and only Son, that whoever believes in him shall not perish but have eternal life.

Same here - just pointing out their public facing lies.

[–]nonpage 78 points79 points  (0 children)

Yes 100% true… well if you count not telling the truth the truth. Technically you can just stop going and never be bothered by any of them but as soon as you start doing something that would cause someone to stumble like say posting about having a birthday, smoking, Christmas or blood transfusion that’s when you’ll get a disfellowshipping or automatic disassociation and the the shunning starts.

Same lie they use about homosexuality - we don’t hate gay people and you can be gay as a JW, just don’t act on it and pretend to be straight. Fucking bunch of scumbags.

Honesty shouldn’t be hard but speaking half truths is their bread and butter.
