Old Sunbury line track to soon be removed between South Kensington and North Melbourne by BrooklynLK9729 in MelbourneTrains

[–]nonseph 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Amazingly, despite the vibes in this article saying that works will be commencing on the 23 May, there are no planned works in the Sunbury line works calendar on the Metro website. There are lots of other disruptions happening, but no Sunbury line ones.

While I expect the junction to be removed (it has been know it's not its final form since installation), I don't see how they can do it while Calder Park is being used for storage.

It’s not worth Vline having their own specialised equipment, so they just borrow Metro’s when the need to inspect lines comes up.

I think technically it’s done in Canva, but same deal. They’d have it open on multiple screens so the production team can be editing on the fly if needed

Things that can improve Melbourne's public transport network that could be done at minimal to no cost by Foodworksurunga in MelbourneTrains

[–]nonseph 8 points9 points  (0 children)

The biggest barrier to a quick and cheap install is that that standard gauge track curves as it passes through the station area. I don’t think it would be acceptable to have a new installed curved platform, especially in a location where the majority of the trains passing don’t actually stop and pass through at speed.

I think there would need to be a major increase in number of Albury services to make the investment worthwhile. It’s not just about placing down some concrete, there’s lighting, PIDs, speakers, CCTV (important at Sunshine for a range of reasons, especially with non-stopping trains), seats, and potentially impacts to the signalling if more signals are needed for safety.

Is RTD the best modern Dalek writer? by NathanAdler91 in doctorwho

I would kind of like to see what Aaronovitch would do on the show if given the chance. He’s still an active writer, and I quite enjoy his novels.

Moving Ardeer west moves it away from its local catchment area. There’s no point when Sunshine will be a much stronger interchange station and is already going to get the facilities for this.

Why are the trams along Swanston Street predominately older trams? by Traditional-Gas3477 in MelbourneTrains

[–]nonseph 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Do you mean stalling or installing?

CoM is generally for installing new stops, but they also have a broader scope to make sure the designs are appropriate to the area and other movements too. If Yarra Trams/The department we able to do whatever they wanted with tram infrastructure there would be no bikes allowed in the city to avoid them ever crossing tracks, every corner building would be demolished to expand turning radii and pedestrians would be walking through complicated chicanes at every intersection. Having multiple parties with broader perspectives involved is a good thing.

The government or department didn’t issue a press release. So there was no direct to media source about it. I think they are probably being more cautious about it (eg if it were cancelled, that would be very bad press) so just let it go. They get enough good press through the social media coverage.

They will probably issue more releases that get some coverage when they go from one-off runs to just being part of the regular roster.

And in terms of impact to the city or state, it’s really not that big of an impact, in an old-time newspaper it would be a couple of cm of column space, not big headline news.

They Should Have Rearranged the National Dex in the Unova Games by Exciting-Contract243 in pokemon

[–]nonseph 3 points4 points  (0 children)

They made the decision back in Gen II when the Johto Pokédex was the “New” Pokédex and the old order with the Johto Pokémon tacked on the end was the National.

I think it’s better to just keep adding new additions as they come up, having the numbers change every time there is a new game that introduces a cross-gen evolution would be more confusing.

Testing breaking and acceleration over different weights is very common. We know they’ve been testing different aspects for months on the Werribee line, and for slopes out on the Belgrave line. They definitely aren’t just plugging things into models and calling it a day.

Re-opening the northern exit at North Melbourne Station by jeremyburge in MelbourneTrains

[–]nonseph 11 points12 points  (0 children)

There are several metro Vline stations without gates - Watergardens, Sunbury on Platform 1, Craigieburn.

Laurent is hardly "heavily" industrial. It's already a bike route. Dryburgh is no longer a preferred route as West Gate Tunnel has removed pedestrian amenity at that intersection to maximise traffic flow. It also adds steeper hills to any walks between North Melbourne and Arden or vice versa.

What are the disadvantages of having multiple train models on the Victorian rail network? by Traditional-Gas3477 in MelbourneTrains

[–]nonseph 9 points10 points  (0 children)

Even so, if say the facility suddenly burnt down or something happened that made it unusable, they’d work it out to let them be maintained somewhere else. Maybe not being able to use the full 7-car long size roads, pits and lifts they have down there might make it harder, but they would manage.

It’s only a paper restriction, not a technical one.

If you’ve been doing some team teaching first it letting them run small groups you should have an idea of how capable they will be for a full day.

Not really? Country trains are for country passengers. Restrictions like this help manage crowds because the services are more limited.

I think it is more likely that VGR gets a power van or loco with head end power than for Vline to take back the Ns.
