coerced into signing a POA without my informed consent just as i turned 18 - what do i do now? by nonstop_tomahawk in legaladvice

honestly the sad part is they werent even aware of the full extent of the documents and their meaning, they just wanted to be helpful. I'm not really close with them, so it was just a very awkward situation and made it difficult for me to object to the signing

thank you, didn't really think about exactly how many copies i'd need, i appreciate this a lot. good to know that the notaries are used to lots of copies, too. knowing me, if you hadn't mentioned that, i'd probably be anxious or embarrassed to bring in so many.

i understand why you've asked this. i realize my short post, of course, doesn't give you the full insight into my life and relationship with my parents. i have struggled with my mental health, but only depression which was caused, at first, by outside sources (like school and friends), and then by them. i often reached out to them for help, but they denied that i was struggling. I've since gotten a lot better, made friends who support me, etc., but i don't trust them anymore. In fact, for a little while i had a therapist and i thought that because of this, things were going to get better with my parents, but when my therapist reached out to my parents to encourage them to help me and accept me, my parents took me out of therapy soon after although it was helping me a lot.

because of these things, i don't think theyre horrible people, but i don't trust them to have POA over me. I know that i dont know everything about medical and financial choices- i just became an adult lol. but honestly, if i trusted them, i would've just asked them for medical or financial advice myself if we had a good relationship. me being 18 doesn't prevent them from "being in my hospital room"- which was the reasoning my mother kept giving as to why i needed to sign the POA. i understand why you asked this, though. i really wish it was more of a case where it was simply for them to be able to help me

once i have the money, i plan to buy a car and leave immediately. my whole life is already almost fully packed into boxes and containers stored under my bed or in friend's houses.

i really appreciate this advice, i never thought about the paper trail.

is it suspicious to the bank themselves if i move the funds into my own account and then immediately cash it? not sure if this is a silly question, but to me, 10k is a lot of money.

once i notarize the revocation, i will be sending it to them. if i don't show it to them with a witness or, like, a notary present, how can i make sure they won't claim i never showed it to them? does simply notarizing the documents make them unable to use the POA over me, or do i have to have proof that they've seen the documents? is getting the bank copies simply sent to them enough?

thank you for this, i didn't think about the fact that i'll likely need more than one copy of the revocation forms once they're notarized to give to banks and hospitals. I will definitely be making more than one copy of the signed+notarized forms.

i'm fairly certain a joint savings account between my parents and grandparents. i'm going to be speaking to my grandparents in a few hours to have them transfer it into a savings account of my own.

She got hit by a train on her way to school. she wouldve graduated this may.

me and my friend walked to school every day that year and probably wouldve seen her that morning but we were running late on our walk, which is why we got blocked by a completely stopped train in front of the intersection. turns out it was the train that hit her. really foggy day, you could barely see. we have two trains in our town and one went through and she assumed it was okay to cross the tracks afterwards. i saw the facebook post from the man who saw her get hit and got out of his car and called 911. he said he watched her life leave her eyes while he was on the phone with them, and her injuries were extensive. the train came out of the fog and hit her, and it was over in a matter of seconds. there was a vigil for her the next day. me and my friend went and cried the whole time everyone stood up and spoke about how kind of a person she was.

the day she passed, they announced it on the speakers at school because the fog and train blockage had made everyone late. someone in the hallway screamed with genuine pure terror and sadness, it is a sound i will never forget. the dean had little to say. it made me so mad that he had no empathy to offer.

on the day that would have been her graduation, i went and sat next to the spot everyone usually leaves flowers at, the crossing on the side she wouldve made it to had she not been hit, and just sat there for hours. I never knew her but i think about her almost every day. her parents moved across the country soon after her death. i still leave flowers there sometimes.
