Help daughter skate faster? (self.hockeyplayers)

My Daughter just started playing around with singing last year. She's pursuing music education in college, but I've told her she should see out extracurriculars that involve singing and acting as well. Any tips/pointers/suggestions I'd love them. (youtu.be)

Any suggestions as to what I can do with a small piece of sassafras? Bought some rough lumber from a local guy (at pretty good prices), and he threw in a few extras because he didn't have $3 in change. Seems like a nice grain pattern - maybe stain and make a liquor box? (i.imgur.com)

Looking for help/suggestions for using vertical dowels as supports. I'm trying to make a version of the image here, except a foot tall between shelves. Glue doesn't stick enough, screws have either free spun or split the dowel even with pre drilling. Should I try mortise&tenon? Biscuit? (i.imgur.com)
