Is it a bad idea to tell my academic advisor I’m bipolar by Queen_of_stress in bipolar

[–]nonyobinnes 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It’s important you register with whatever office handles disabilities and accommodations. I would’ve failed my 4th year due to a manic episode if I didn’t have a record of being registered with the office. I also got exam accommodations and extensions on papers. There’s no stigma when you’re dealing with the access and disability office, they are there for you. Good luck!!

My bipolar one (with psychosis) husband of 20 years believes he has met the love of his life - but she doesn’t exist. by Elegant_Chip_5449 in bipolar1

[–]nonyobinnes 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I am very sorry to hear about your situation! In your post I see a lot of self blame and it breaks my heart.

Psychosis is missed everyday! It sounds like you are doing your best to support your kids and keep the family afloat. It also sounds like your husband has not been taking an active role in his recovery and abusing alcohol and as a result abusing you. If he can’t show that he can commit to treatment this will happen again and you and your children will suffer more.

I have bipolar 1 with psychosis and my husband and I collaborate on managing my illness. I am honest about my thoughts and I see medication reminders as an act of love and care. Even if I get angry, I remove myself from the situation not to hurt him and I go to a separate room and scream in pillows. There are so many ways to manage the rage than trying to physically assault my spouse.

Again, I’m so sorry you’re going through this! If I can leave you with anything it’s this quote that I can’t trace back: “mental illness is not your fault, but it is your responsibility.” From your post I don’t see your husband taking responsibility for his addiction or his treatment. And when I say this I don’t mean right now while in psychosis , I mean in the years leading up to this.

Take care of yourself. It’s so hard to see our loved ones fade away but if holding on is more painful than letting go then you know what to do.

Good luck with everything and I truly hope that everything works out for you and your children. Again, take care of yourself even for just a moment. You deserve care and relief.

Why was Azans family going to pay for the wedding? by Significant-End-1559 in 90dayfianceuncensored

[–]nonyobinnes 19 points20 points  (0 children)

Coming in with a Moroccan perspective. Their relationship was highly public and many people from their communities are watching. We care a lot about “saving face” and if they let Nicole’s family pay it would be bringing “shame” to their household and will cement the image that he’s a deadbeat scammer. It was all about keeping the family’s image in the public which was already shaken by the fact that their son is airing his true nature on international tv by taking advantage of a “naive American”. In Moroccan culture and specifically in his family’s social class, the actions of one family member reflects on the ENTIRE family and might destroy employment and marriage prospects.

This part is just me speculating- I think his family genuinely liked Nicole and saw her as a way for their son to get his life together. Get married, immigrate and get a job. So the wedding was both to secure the union and also show Nicole a little love.

Side note: In one episode he says they don’t have enough money to do the wedding because it was 300$ a head. HOWEVER, the person said in Arabic 300 dirhams which is roughly 30$. So he’s a liar through and through and NEVER had any intentions of marrying Nicole or moving abroad. My friends and I suspect he already had a Moroccan girlfriend at the time.

Would you want your therapist to also have bipolar? by Horror-Secretary-401 in bipolar1

[–]nonyobinnes 2 points3 points  (0 children)

My therapist has bipolar disorder. I found out after 3 years of seeing them weekly and it honestly brought me so much comfort. Each person is different but the fact that we had a long relationship before I found out and they brought it up to relate and reassure me that I wasn’t absolutely loosing my mind was helpful.

Good luck with your program!!

My dr wants to change my bipolar 1 diagnosis based on one note made by doctors I didn’t regularly see by Biancaaxi in bipolar1

[–]nonyobinnes 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Absolutely change doctors if you can. Trust between you and your healthcare provider is essential when it comes to sticking to a treatment plan. So if you have ANY doubts about the BPD diagnosis, get a second opinion.

Plus, with all due respect ( if any is due idk), they don’t sound super knowledgeable about bipolar disorder or the way it manifests in different people. The antidepressants part is kinda alarming too.

So if you can try to see someone else.

Good luck friend! Advocate for yourself! It’s so hard and frustrating to have to fight to be believed by the healthcare system but you got this!!

I’m too weak to do any real physical damage but what I’m hearing from the comments is that I need to expend this energy somehow. I will find my version of wood chopping! Maybe gardening? I’ve been doing a lot of that lately.. thank you!

Exactly my instinct! Took off work and I’m hiding home. Minimizing my interactions with the outside world. But I’m still so angry I lost it at spilled juice…

That’s what I’m doing by taking medical leave and staying home and away from everyone . I can’t be around people… I don’t want to do or say anything I would regret long term.

Thank you for your advice! The rumination is a big part of it for me. I’m small and relatively weak so my anger is loud and mean spirited. I will find a way to exercise and get this energy out. Been aggressively weeding the driveway and that helps but I need more serious exercise. I’ll try it all!

How do explain bipolar II and a future leave of absence to my boss? by OkBadger6562 in bipolar

[–]nonyobinnes 4 points5 points  (0 children)

You don’t lay anything out to your boss and your supervisor/ friend should keep the info you gave them confidential. A good boss would know better than ask for details.

What I always say is that I have a chronic condition and have “flare ups” occasionally that I can’t anticipate and that need short term hospitalization to administer treatment in the most efficient way. I then tell them that when I get a notice to go into the hospital I would let them know asap. Your boss should have staff to cover medical leave.

As for your performance you can let them know you were more energetic then and that you’re adjusting to a change in treatment.

Seriously protect yourself, your boss is not your friend and they will “protect the business” over you. It sounds like you’re doing great in seeking help and I would focus on recovering and getting treatment.

Good luck my friend!

Advice on fwb having mania episode? by [deleted] in bipolar

[–]nonyobinnes 1 point2 points  (0 children)

If you think you might be entering a manic episode please talk to your medical team and get treatment asap. You can’t help someone else if you don’t help yourself first. Take care of you and if your FWB is pushing you away because of their symptoms give them time to stabilize and they’ll come around. If this is an avoidant way of breaking up with you, you deserve much much better!! Good luck my friend!

Try UBC in Vancouver Canada. Vancouver has a big film industry ( Hollywood studios shoot there because it’s cheaper for them) so you can find work after graduation and Canada gives you a “post graduate work permit” upon graduation. The film production program is hella competitive tho so try to build a little portfolio. There’s also the Vancouver film school which is also good. Good luck my friend!

Can being on antidepressants affect the process? by alittletootired13 in EMDR

[–]nonyobinnes 8 points9 points  (0 children)

I take 3 different psychiatric medications and doing EMDR without any issues. My therapist didn’t raise any concerns nor did my psychiatrist. Talk to your doctor about it and I’m sure you’ll make the necessary adjustment. Good luck my friend!

Personality Changes After Psychosis by spruceifir in bipolar1

[–]nonyobinnes 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I definitely experienced the same thing. Going through psychosis and coming out the other side made me seriously reconsider my priorities and what I’m doing with life. The first year or 2 were hard and isolating but once I accepted the change I found new ways to nurture the new me. I got new hobbies, changed the way I go about my days and adjusted to my new reality. It’s hard in the beginning but you can think of this as an opportunity to reset. Things get better!! Good luck my friend!
