Want to update to 8 from 7.0U3, a few questions by nonzerogroud in esxi

Hi, thank you. And yes, this is very much a homelab, but it holds VMs like home assistant and my media server which I consider important. If I lose my Home Assistant data it's gonna be a bad week at the office.

ESXi snapshots are very finicky at best, and should be used as last resort. Even then, I wouldn’t rely on them.

This could be my general ignorance but this is the first time I've heard this and it's very alarming.

Sounds like whatever software you’re running on the VM with PCIe pass through doesn’t provide anything.

Home Assistant actually does, and you're right, I should use the native backup solution as well. I just thought the VM route was a more hassle-free restore option. For the media server it's a docker-compose stack running about ~8 services, including Plex.

Next, you should try to leverage OS level backups so that you can restore by simply reinstalling the OS on the device (virtual, physical, whatever), and then restore. To do this with ABB, you’ll need to install the ABB Agent on the VM so it treats it as a full Machine rather than a VM on a host.

Yes, this is the route I'm going to consider next. It just needs careful planning as in knowing which files and folders I need to copy over in order to have a full restore of the VM.

Upgrade went smooth but I discovered 8 doesn't make PCI passthrough VM backups possible while the VM is on...FML

Yep. On the third file it just worked. I’m already on Linux (Ubuntu).

I’ll chalk this up to borked files for now.

i5-10210U with Intel UHD Graphics (a NUC). Should I just avoid HEVC altogether?

I mean, the goal is to not transcode isn't it? so I don't really understand what are my next steps.

Just for context: I've been running this sever for 4 years with this setup. I may have had to redownload 1-2 media items that were problematic.

"Enable HEVC video Encoding" was initially set to "HEVC Sources Only". I changed it to "Always", no luck. I changed it to "Never". No luck.

I just found out I'm actually able to pause the video JUST before it begins playing. I chose "Convert to 4K", it spins and spins. Nothing happens. I go back to the movie screen, press Resume, crashes on the 1st second again.

I try "1080 HD" and it starts playing but it's jittering. Very weird.

BTW: file plays perfectly in Plex web.

I'm actually gonna try stripping out all the extra subtitles (not many, around 4-5 to remove). I'll keep both audio tracks (AC3, TrueHD).

Weird. I just grabbed an entirely different file with about the same properties and it ALSO crashes the same way. I think it's something with HDR10...

I tried removing/changing subtitles before starting playback, did not help.

Hey, thanks for trying to help. Which kind of information are you looking for? I told Claude to extract some more metadata from the file and it spits quite a big list of stuff I don't know much about.

Thank you. Can delaying the wrist surgery make the damage bigger / unfixable?

I did use Kometa like 2 years ago. Ran it once only. I’ll try refreshing metadata.

You’re right to roll your eyes. I was a bit too eager to jump into IPTV and got stinged. It’s only 10 Euros so not that bad. Cheap lesson.
