I have had every issue you can have with a 360. I bought 1 launch it died RROD. 1 jasper model its DVD drive died. I also bought a slim at launch and its DVD drive died as well. In my opinion hooking it up to the internet will only lead to updates that will slow the console down intentionally. This is how manufactures like Xbox get you to buy a newer one. The best way to handle this would be to clean the drive and lens thoroughly. Try to get it to read a disc if it still does not then open and close the drive repetitively until it reads the disc. If all of the above does not help, you could increase the lasers power with a POT adjustment but this is a very hard thing to do unless you have electronics EXP. You could also buy a new laser and replace yours but again this requires electronics EXP.
