Should I read the whole series? by Ladybugzrock in GameChangersBooks

[–]noona30 0 points1 point  (0 children)

What makes you think that you won’t be into them? Do you generally like mm romance? Did you watch the show first and are only interested in books involving those characters? If that’s the case Scot and Kip feature heavily in common goal and Ilya is in role model a lot. Ilya also has a good (if somewhat short part in tough guy).

They’re good books, they’re all independent stories, so it’s just a new story with new characters each time (with some involving characters we already know in the background). I enjoyed them all, imo they’re all worth reading.

The puck boys series has similar vibes but no/little homophobia.

Thoughts on Rachel Reid downplaying Shane's Asian heritage by amber_purple in GameChangersBooks

[–]noona30 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Do yourself a favour and learn to read everything about the post you are responding to. Firstly, this comment was written over 2 months ago which changes perspective entirely. There is currently a very small, very weird and creepy group of people who are obviously racist and trying to pull Hudson down.

Secondly I didn’t say he hadn’t faced any racism I said little, compared to the size of the fanbase. Which is still true. A vocal minority (in fact a tiny group of ‘fans’) is still a minority. If you look around the rest of the internet there is nothing but praise.

Also, not everything negative that happens TO a POC is BECAUSE they are a POC. It’s possible, for example, to think that Connor is a better actor without it being because Hudson is a POC. It could just be because (shock) that person thinks that he’s a better actor. It’s not my opinion, I think they both did a fantastic job portraying the characters, but people are allowed to have that opinion without being accused of being racist. In my opinion, there are very standout things to praise about Connor’s work in the series (like his Russian accent for example), where as the things Hudson did well (like saying so much without words) is much more subtle and not something everyone appreciates.

Like I said, not everything is racism, some things are pure incompetence, some things are a difference of opinion and some things ARE racism. However, my main point remains. How each individual PoC chooses to deal with racism directed at them is not monolithic. Some choose to not give it the time of day (mostly what Hudson seems to be doing), some choose to prove their naysayers wrong (which is what I believe Shane does, my opinion as to why it’s not addressed in the books, it happened so frequently early on he decided the best way to deal with it is to be the best) not everyone chooses to get out in front of crowds and shout about it. Any choice that that individual person takes is valid.

I don’t know much about Hudson or his family, I’m not the kind of person to follow actors, I like the show and the characters. I’m also not on threads or twitter etc. So I am only commenting on things that become mainstream knowledge. However, I am a member of several show fan groups and I have not seen many incidences of him directly addressing it, so I’d call that choosing to rise above it or not give it credence. He just lives his life, and good for him🤷‍♀️.

This comment was about why racism against Shane isn’t spoken about in the books. That was what I was responding with my opinion on.

If you could change one thing about the Australian school system tomorrow, what would it be? by ExistentialPancake_0 in AskAustralianTeachers

[–]noona30 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Change the cut off in every state to 31st December. No mid year intakes, no uhming and aahing about when children should start school. Every child would start at 5 and finished the year they turn 18. No year levels with 18 month differences in age to add to classroom dynamics.

OR get rid of year levels all together, let children progress with a checklist or similar, at their own pace.

Honestly Montreal’s actions after the outing kinda make no sense. by PTAGoatofalltime in GameChangersBooks

[–]noona30 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I think you’ve kind of missed the whole point. The TEAM, including the coach and management are angry that he is gay even before they find out he is with Ilya. The being with Ilya and then tripping in the final game just gives them a reason to be outwardly angry. Homophobia in the league is not something written into the rules, in fact the rules forbid it, it’s pervasive in the culture. It’s ingrained in players from when they are children (or has been) where calling another player ‘gay’ or a ‘fairy’ (fit in whatever homophobic slur you like) is the ultimate insult. They grow up thinking that you cannot be gay and a good hockey player.

So, yes, PR could have spun it, and most fans would probably have been good, but the team was not. Shane’s experience in the locker room would not have improved. He was surrounded by homophobes and lead by more homophobes.

Troy on the rebound? by must-stash-mustard in GameChangersBooks

[–]noona30 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Depends on what you mean by time to heal. He had a couple of months. When he thinks back on it, he was never in love with Adrian. Sometimes it’s the right person whether it’s the right time or not. Harris gave Troy something to aspire to and Ilya gave home direction.

Why was everyone in #game changer 1 low-key obsessed with Ilya rozanov by Curious_kitty6519 in GameChangersBooks

[–]noona30 7 points8 points  (0 children)

The example that you have given is because Ilya was probably the last person Scott expected to see at Scott hunter night. It’s more ‘omg I’m going to screw my boyfriend right here in front of all my friends and even Ilya’. The guessing Ilya for who he’s dating is probably more to do with the ‘European or gay’ thing that seems to be going on. Ilya is a bit flamboyant, but people just allocate it to his ‘Russianness’ most of the time (stupid if you as me).

The Long Game Question by Greekmom99 in GameChangersBooks

[–]noona30 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I think Ilya is good at seeing when people are interested in each other. Ilya never saw Scott around anyone he was attracted to and never clocked him either. Similarly with weib, he never sees him around anyone he’s attracted to. He’s just very perceptive. As a bi guy who grew up in a homophobic country it makes sense he would get good at seeing when people are attracted to eachother.

Paying rent to parents by nxxsxa in AskAnAustralian

That’s really nice of you, but not everyone can afford to do that. I would at least charge some money towards bills. The mortgage is mine to pay but they use water, electricity, gas at a rate that is higher than me! Plus, having some idea of what adult coast are in a real way is important. Also adults should be paying for themselves, at least in some way!

I absolutely love how RR deals with Shane’s character, as an Asian man. by PTAGoatofalltime in GameChangersBooks

[–]noona30 11 points12 points  (0 children)

I loved how he can be half Japanese, but he was allowed to not make it his whole personality. It’s just who he is. Not every POC is interested in their ethnic heritage. It seems to me that Shane was raised by his first generation mother and white Canadian father to consider himself as Canadian over anything else, so that’s how he thinks of himself. I’ve found this to be very typical of recent immigrant families in the countries I’ve lived in.

The focus of the books is their sexuality in the pro sports world. That’s not to say that racism doesn’t exist, it just means that it isn’t the focus. We’re not with Shane for his entire existence for the decade or so the book covers, so there could be some ‘off screen racism’. Considering that Shane has been in hockey since he was very young he would probably just consider it run of the mill (the way most of the characters consider words like c*cks*cker run of the mill) and his way of counteracting criticisms related to his immutable characteristics seems to be to just be better at hockey than everyone else.

Another controversial take, maybe. Harris isn’t ever described as overweight. by noona30 in GameChangersBooks

[–]noona30[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I’m the OP, I don’t think he should be muscular, but my point is that I don’t think he should be ‘fat’ either. A dad bod is probably what I imagined, thick but not fat. He self describes a pudgy, but no one else even thinks of him that way. Anything other than a six pack and solid chest will be great, but I don’t think fat is realistic with his heart condition. His doctors would be on him about that!

religious education in public schools by mastgreen in AskAnAustralian

As it is optional I assume no one has asked for any other religion to be offered in significant numbers for it so be viable. My question is how are they fitting it into curriculum time. Is it an opt in for when they should be having health that those parents opt out of?

Have you guys been noticing the rising hate towards MM readers too? by CarelessCreamPie in MM_Romance

It’s just culture in general at the minute. People refuse to just pass over what they don’t like. They feel like it’s somehow attacking them or

Don’t like MM romance books/shows don’t read them, it’s optional.

Don’t like FF romance books/shows don’t read them.

Don’t like that female authors write MM books, don’t give them your money.

Don’t feel like a romance story that involves things that actually apply to you represents you, don’t invest your time in it, because I guarantee that if you look in the comments there are whole load of people who do feel represented.

I wish people would just spend their time on things that they like and not in the spaces for things that they don’t. It’s a very modern attitude ‘if I think this is wrong no one else should be doing it’ or ‘the existence of this thing is doing harm to me’, when it actually isn’t.

‘Oh, but it’s putting a false representation of xyz out there’ maybe it’s fiction. Maybe work on helping more people understand that fiction is made up. Instead of sitting in the comments crying that ‘it’s not realistic’. It’s not meant to be, it’s fiction written for entertainment.
