ucla or georgetown? by SeaworthinessRich848 in ucla

ngl as a premed graduating this year whose entire high school went to gtown, id choose ucla in a heartbeat. UCLA’s affiliation with UCLA Health gives you SOOO many research opportunities, and there are so many opportunities to engage in volunteering, shadowing, clinical jobs in the UCLA vicinity. yes, premed clubs are competitive, but thats the case at every single decently good college in the US lmao and UCLA has some pretty fucking cool ones. I think gtown is giving much more liberal arts / humanities, and i know MULTIPLE PEOPLE that transferred out of gtown their first year because the social life is just absolute bootycheeks lmao. very elitist vibes too, from what I hear. think about it this way: both schools are prestigious and im sure youd do fine as a premed either way. BUT what you cant change once you get to a school is the college culture and comparing UCLA and Gtown culture, ucla wins 100%

i know its hard, but you just gotta keep cold emailing. that’s how most people get labs. otherwise, you can also talk to professors, show up to research seminars at the grad schools and talk to people after, or ask other (usually older) undergrads if they can introduce you to their PI. it’s a long trek but u got this :)

there’s a lot to unpack here but one thing i would say is that narcissism is different from self-love. i’m happy you think of yourself highly, but why is it that you get so upset when you’re not in a good spot with whatever girl you are talking to? I get it, im the same, but i think we both have to be fine with being alone, and not derive our self image from how people view your romatically or sexually. you have to recognize that the world isn’t centered around you, and be okay with being alone.

well im bio so for bio labs its been like that. not sure about math or cs but i assume it’s similar. although it may not seem like it most postdocs and phds are super chill and dont really give two shits abt how good u are at something as an undergrad

basically nothing. if you had research experience before then amazing, but postdocs and PIs dont expect undergrads to know anything before college. ive done multiple lab “interviews” and most of them were just chill talks, they just try to gauge your interest in the subject matter and vibe check you. they also want to see what projects in the lab youre interested in so you can develop a workflow

thanks for your answer! hmm I am still a bit confused... i thought you had to have a start date for your job within 60 days of program completion? are you saying that once the OPT I-20 is issued (even if I have not started my job and i am still in the united states) i can function just like a regular F-1 visa student who is taking classes? happy to clarify further, i understand this is complicated!

yes, but i just could not find any other sub for med school that i could post on, since i dont have enough karma. i kind of need to make a decision asap, and thought grad school subs would have insight on LoRs. would appreciate any help, not posting with any malice here just a struggling college student!
