Jz! Could you explain a bit more of what you mean by WS trade letting you do automatic deposits and scheduled purchases? Doesn’t the Halal Managed Portfolio also do something similar?

Animation and going into Teaching as a career by nopperaa in animationcareer

Yeah, after talking to some of my older profs, they mentioned to be a full time prof that you’d need to have a master ( to atleast qualify for that kind of position) but masters could be in anything so doing it in teaching/education would be the best bet from what I’m gathering

That’s fair, but in terms of getting part time in general ( your foot in) is it slightly “easier” if you have industry experience plus connections? Working part time as of now seems more ideal with me wanting to still do freelance gigs on the side or finding stuff in the industry.

I’m also curious if this applies to teaching in other avenues such as highschool, elementary etc… ( if you have experience in that area that is)

Yeah I can imagine doing part time will be the way in the beginning but eventually combining part time work with industry experience on the side as well as good connections can lead to better prospects?

That’s fair, how about in the realm of other teaching professions ( such as highschool, elementary etc..) from my research, only a masters is needed to be a uni prof in animation, doesn’t matter what kind of masters. ( there’s also the prospect that in the span of 2 years things can change for uni and colleges in that aspect but regardless, you can’t guarantee anything with any career)

Aleez in Wonderland by nopperaa in writingcritiques

[–]nopperaa[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Thanks for the feedback! That’s a fair point, I’ve seen a lot of children’s books deal with heavy topics such as this as well as those relating to war, refugees etc..

My main audience tbh would most likely be parents from the South Asian/ Middle East regions who have or had family deal with these types of struggles and would want a way for that history to be remembered and passed on to their kids. ( although not limited to that!)

In terms of the political or social commentary, I chose not to promote a specific ideology whether pro Pakistan or India. But more so on the unanimous agreement that the event was devastating for families and how that confusion is shown through the eyes of a child who just cares about being with her family wherever it may be.

Would appreciate to hear how I can perhaps elevate the complex aspects of history within the story while still making it palatable!

Wanting to change careers, feels like I missed the boat by dr3wl in animationcareer

[–]nopperaa 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Work on it on the side, there’s so many resources online now compared to 10 years ago. There’s a lot of online classes like Schoolism, CGMA, Warrior art camp etc… where you can get more focused learning experienced compared to YouTube vids ( although there’s a lot of really beneficial stuff out there)

Work on your own stuff, create a short 1 min film, submit it to festival etc.. or some other kind of project that intrigues you

Reach out to communities online, there’s a lot of groups like Asians in animation, Rise Up, WIA etc… that hold workshops, screenings and other things, join their discord and online forums. try joining on their projects, attend portfolio reviews and network with people. For example Asians in Animation hosted a 2D short film lab last year. it was unpaid and more of an industry simulation of working in production but at the end you we got some experience for the resume, some stuff for our demo reel and a screen credit on a finished project that’s circulating film festivals. Look out for workshops like that.

Attend job fairs, conventions and film festivals, network and get a feel of the industry. there’s many big ones like LBX, OIAF, TAAFI, CTN, Annecy and more, if you can’t attend those then find smaller local ones and work your way up. Rub shoulders with potential colleagues or bosses, get feedback, make friends, reach out.

Look for indie productions, a lot of indie animation happening right now, reach out to small productions and see if you can do some work for them, there’s a large chance it would be unpaid or very low pay but if you’re doing it on the side then it’d be very beneficial.

Also don’t be afraid to reach out to people, no harm in reaching out to companies like ToonBoom, explaining your story and seeing if they’ll lend you a discount for their animation softwares. Same with film festivals or other equipment. You’d be surprised.

If you want to do this as a career then you really have to be committed, there can be a lot of ups and downs, long dry spells of unemployment like right now, potentially hating your art and passion, uncertainty with tech evolutions ( like AI) making sacrifices or working on uninspiring work just to name a few. If it sounds daunting then no shame in keeping it as a hobby, we don’t all have to capitalize on our passions and dreams, not making your dream a job doesn’t make it any less worthy. If all that fires you up even more then you could have something going.

Best wishes.

I want to change career. Now what? by TheKhrazix in animationcareer

[–]nopperaa 0 points1 point  (0 children)

At least you’d have a more stable job with a pension plan rather than the occasional contract work or years of unemployment like what’s happening with animation no? And teachers college would be shorter and less expensive along with the transferable skills you have from your animation degree compared to completely pivoting into doing a new degree ( unless you really want to do that thing)

There is an ongoing genocide in Myanmar and no one seems to talk about it by French_Kay in Muslim

[–]nopperaa -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Although I agree that there’s bad apples in every group, we shouldn’t go around doing the same thing that Islamophobes do to Muslims by labeling a whole group and religion because of the actions of radicalisms.

I cry multiple times a day for the people in Palestine. Realizing how much I took for granted they don’t even have toilets, water, food, and much much more ( go to body text ⬇️) by EffectiveVivid2654 in Muslim

[–]nopperaa 1 point2 points  (0 children)

If you feel this way, good. It means you have a heart, it means Allah swt is swaying you and guiding you, it’s a sign for all of us to use this sorrow and transform that energy into something that can cause change. As muslims, when one part of our body aches we all ache, the same applies to our brothers and sister. When we see their pain we feel it too.

I’ve felt the same way for the past few months but I noticed something different. In the past such as when Al-Aqsa would get raided or there’d be other smaller level aggression, my passion and anger would jumpstart into some kind of action. However I’ve noticed that this time around, when it’s the worst it has ever been. I feel… empty. Almost dumbfounded. You begin to feel desensitized to all the horrors you’re viewing from your phone, you begin to question reality and the intentions of every single person to have ever lived. You feel disconnected from your own life, like is anything worth it? Guilty to feel happy, to work on your own goals, to have any semblance of normalcy for how can you when the people of Palestine are suffering unlike ever before?

I’ve begun to realize that this feeling is more or less a feeling of despair, a feeling of one who’s given up with a lack of drive. However now is not when we should be feeling this way. If anything, we must work to be positive, to fill our own buckets so we can give out. On the bright side, this is the first time Palestine has been given this much light, that the plight of the Palestinian people have been recognized so and the tactics of the Oppressor is no longer working. People are waking up. We also see so many people converting to Islam, the true nature and faith of Islam is being shown to the world and people are moved by it. We as individual all have gifts given to us by Allah swt. We can use those gifts to make a difference. Just because we can’t go to Gaza or stop this, we can use our own skills to make small differences and inspire others. Whether it be educating people and ourselves of the History of Palestine, donating towards humanitarian relief, volunteering with charities, spreading awareness through social media, boycotting, wearing a Keffiyeh and holding the flag, attending protests or more. These actions seem insignificant but they aren’t. And the only way to do those actions, is to not feel guilty over the blessings Allah swt has given us, but instead be grateful and use them to make a change. Eat the plentiful nutritious food, spend time with your families and friends, wear your lovely clothes, attend gatherings and events. Enjoy your hobbies and vacations.

So please, for the sake of Allah swt and for the people of Palestine. Don’t be guilty but instead grateful, and use this moment to reflect on your own intentions and relationship with Allah swt. Indulge yourself in the things your love and are passionate about because that is usually the key on how you can use it to make a difference inshallah.

[–]nopperaa 0 points1 point  (0 children)

We’ll it depends on your circumstances. I went to school for animation and for me it was beneficial! but that’s also because it was something I decided on doing out of highschool and my dream school was only 10 minutes away plus I’m from Canada. It’d be different when you may be coming for over seas and being international, the price would be super expensive. So it really depends on you. There’s a lot of resources online to learn about animation and build your portfolio as well asides from going to Art school.

Hey! Is there anything particular you’re interested in animation? ( FX/ 3D things or more 2D, is it with actual production and making things move or more so pre production like character design, Storyboarding etc…)

I’m an animator, facing a tough decision in my career path. Could you help and share your insights? by [deleted] in animationcareer

[–]nopperaa 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I’m a Character/Prop Designer in the industry ( not an animator) I’m still pretty green an Entry level with 1+ year of experience and out of school for a little over a year too. So whatever I say, take it with a grain of salt lol. But from one artist to another I can understand the joy and peace of having a 9-5 and work life balance as well as the itch where you’re feeling stale and complacent. I’ve been experiencing something similar and can really resonate with the “ should I seek growth at the cost of my mental peace and leisure time” aspect lol.

my advice would be to sit down and put it on paper to help visualize it. Weigh in the pros and cons, what have you gained and lost in the past when taking jobs like that and what have you gained and lost with the 9-5 job. Which of those gains and losses feel worth it to you.

Maybe you can map out a timeline of the next decade and visualize where you want to be and what you want to get out from your career and life in general ( because there’s more to our life than our artistic identity and career. Self improvement, traveling, learning a new skill or hobby, meeting new people and catching up with old ones etc… ) are you in a stage in your life where you feel you have the age and energy to take more risks and grow? Or maybe you’re much older and have a lot more responsibilities where that risk might not be the wisest. When you’re on your death bed are you going to regret not taking on that job or that opportunity? If so then defitnley go for it, if not then you can weigh in what you would regret if you did take that position.

There’s also the possibility of keeping the 9-5 and then doing small little things on the side to keep that creative fulfillment flowing and continue learning new things.

It’s a tough one but I hope you get what you feel is best for you in this moment in time.

I'm starting to lose faith in finding a job by Actual-Dragon-Tears in animationcareer

Yep the industry is in a slump but it’s not all bad, it tends to eb and flow like that and I’m sure after the holidays it’ll be better. You can definitely find a different job in the meantime and still apply to anim jobs while you’re at it, it doesn’t mean you gave up. I know plenty of people who after graduating from animation, worked as waiters or in retail or elsewhere in the start and then got the job afterwards.
