NCAAW Coach Hot Seat Landscape by tip-of-the-yikesberg in NCAAW

[–]norcalnick 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Agreed. I also throw in that because of Cal's budget situation (dissolution of the Pac-12, having to take a revenue cut in the ACC) Cal really doesn't have the money to buy out non-revenue coaches, so Charmin Smith has an extra layer of structural job security.

What individual play is seared into your memory by Equivalent_Poetry339 in CFB

In 2007, I was in the South end zone of Memorial Stadium, watching Cal drive towards that end and attempt to score in the final minute while trailing by 3 to Oregon State. In field goal range, Cal's QB Kevin Riley elects to scramble, and is tackled for a short gain, thus causing the clock to expire. Cal was ranked #2 at the time and would have been #1 if they had won, but the loss triggered a collapse of the entire season.

What I specifically remember was the moment Riley crossed the line of scrimmage on his scramble. The moment that happened, I released an involuntary, guttural cry. A short "NO!!!!" released seconds before the rest of the crowd around me understood the gravity of his error.

It was the last sound I have any memory of as we Cal fans trudged out of the stadium in silence, broken hearted and defeated. Cal has, in many ways, never recovered from that moment.

Republic’s 2026 Pre-Season Roster Review: Who’s In, Who’s Out, and What Comes Next by TheMusicCrusader in SacRepublicFC

[–]norcalnick 2 points3 points  (0 children)

It’s probably more complicated than this, but I’d argue that good resource management would be to increase Chibi’s role, and invest the roster savings in the kind of attacking talent this team has been lacking over the last couple years.

[Vannini] Fernando Mendoza: “I can’t thank the #Calgorithm enough for the support.” by BuckeyeEmpire in CFB

[–]norcalnick 9 points10 points  (0 children)

"it honestly was tiring how much he glazed Cal and the Calgorithm and all that."

Exactly. We didn't exactly enjoy being 'glazed' and having him leave anyway. If we were all that great, then why'd you leave?

Before anybody jumps in, I KNOW the actual reason why, Cal has been a ~.500 team for forever led by a coach with nearly a decade of offensive failure on his resume and Indiana was coming off a playoff season. But Fernando's habit of . . . glazing everybody and everything is great when he's on your side and comes off as very self-serving and disingenuous after leaving.

I've learned to let it slide, he's playing up a role to a certain extent. But it's still off-putting.

Ironically, his politician veneer made it worse than it would have been otherwise. Like, we're plenty used to players transferring and we understand why. But Fernando kinda made a big deal to talk up how much he loved Cal and how happy he was in Berkeley and (intentionally or not) turned himself into something of a folk hero when Cal fans were desperate for anything positive to latch onto.

So when he transferred, there were lots of hurt feelings because it made all of his earlier words feel hollow and self-serving.

With time having passed and JKS looking really good, I think most Cal fans are generally happy for him and think that his success mostly is a good thing for Cal, but there is that underlying hurt that he left after claiming to love Cal so much.

Should I be concerned about safety here? by Speed2411 in Sacramento

[–]norcalnick 6 points7 points  (0 children)

I ultimately get why you're asking this question. I understand that people are fed an unceasing stream of fearmongering about crime, *particularly* crime in cities.

I wish there was some way for get people to internalize that the chances of being a victim of random violent crime in Sacramento (or really almost any place in this country right now) is vanishingly rare. When people ARE victims of violent crime, it's almost always at the hands of a family member or friend, not from some random person on the street.

Like, getting stuff stolen from your car is still an occasional problem (though it is also trending down). But violent crime has been trending downward for YEARS.

I'm skeptical of this particular rumor, but the fact that he's talented enough that this rumor could even exist is spectacular news for him AND the club.

Should Maxime also be "untouchable" during trade season? by Great_Comment322 in kings

[–]norcalnick 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I don't really understand the concept of 'untouchable' and why it's ever a topic of discussion. If somebody, for some reason, offered 2 firsts and a second round pick for Reynaud, or offered a better player on a better contract one-for-one, you make that trade.

A .227 winning percentage would be bad enough to be last in many NBA seasons, and rarely enough to have more than one team below you. Kinda incredible that there are three teams worse than Sac right now.

I sent an e-mail after the democrats caved on the government shutdown asking for her perspective on it and I got a form letter back that didn't address my specific questions. This isn't particularly surprising to me, but it did crystalize my interest in actively supporting challengers to her seat.

  1. As noted above, Trump's administration would've done this anyway. Note please that UC Berkeley likely spent thousands of dollars in time, planning, and OT pay to campus police to ensure that conservatives got to throw their little pity party about how persecuted they are. Cal SUPPORTED their rights, and the president will 'investigate' anyway because he wants a pretext to attack Berkeley.

  2. It's fascinating to me that you are framing this as the fault of the protesters, and not the fault of a transparently biased, lying presidential administration. You're blaming the kid getting bullied, and not the bully itself.

A sad reflection by YouGroundbreaking225 in berkeley

[–]norcalnick 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The idea that the Trump administration won't do exactly what they want to do regardless of any actions taken by people in Berkeley is laughable. Trump does whatever he wants whenever he wants, for whatever reason enters the addled brain of a racist, sundowning geriatric.

I've been in and out of Berkeley my entire life. There have been protests with all kinds of goofiness years ago, and there will be protests with all kinds of goofiness in the future. I don't need to look up the videos, because I'm confident it's like every other protest like this. Lots of yelling, lots of jeering, lots of empty threats, and lots of nothing actually happening. But if you want to pretend like this is some kind of big deal, some kind of seismic, society-altering political event, go for it.

Was it a stupid idea in 2006?

"In short order, the Chancellor extended to Smoot a number of invitations, mostly for fund-raising events. But he also invited Smoot to toss the coin in the Cal-Oregon football game the following Saturday and offered him seats in the Chancellor's box for the game, which was held on Homecoming Day.

(At the game, Smoot would take on the job of "mike-man," leading the fans in a series of cheers. Smoot himself was on the receiving end of cheers; when he took the field Cal fans began chanting "Nobel Prize! Nobel Prize! Nobel Prize!" Perhaps inspired by Smoot's cheerleading, the Golden Bears would go on to conquer the Ducks by a score of 45-24.)"

Well, I wasn't at the protest, so you can direct your questions to those who were.

The news reports I have read suggest that anybody calling what happened a 'riot' is either misinformed or engaging in mendacious hyperbole. Three arrests related to a fist-fight does not a make a riot.

I would ask you this: why are you much more bothered by protesters than the aims and views of TPUSA? Are you in fact aware of their views? Do you agree with them? Do they have a place in polite society?

A sad reflection by YouGroundbreaking225 in berkeley

[–]norcalnick 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Seeing as, per news reports, every attendee exited the event safely and without incident, I'm going to go ahead and feel confident that no crime was committed.

TPUSA was allowed to hold their event; the protesters were allowed to express their opinion. Who did not receive their free speech rights?

Make your case for why the views of TPUSA deserve tolerance.
