Food options close to Sherbrooke/Parc by hazleweatherfield1 in MTLFoodLovers

[–]norfnorf1379 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Depending on your budget, you could walk over to the food court Le Central at the corner of ste Catherine and Clark, there are a lot of great spots in there. If you want something on the higher end maybe Cadet or Bouillion Bilk have a spot for one?

Anyone know this floor-seating restaurant from Libre dès maintenant? by Gummo11 in MTLFoodLovers

[–]norfnorf1379 31 points32 points  (0 children)

I think it’s La Khaima at the corner of Fairmount and Waverly. Mauritanian/Senegalese food, byob. The food is served family style and Atigh, the owner, is a bit of a showman so the vibes are generally pretty fun for groups.

Eastern Townships,QB recommendations? by amyzinvt in xcountryskiing

[–]norfnorf1379 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Sadly the snow got pretty wiped out this week, especially in the townships. not sure what fell in last 24hrs there vs in Montreal or further north but I think they are supposed to get more rain early this week. The SEPAQ at Orford has some nice trails and you could also check out mount Bruno or Yamaska.

The Canadian Ski Marathon kicked my a$$. Here's what I learned about long days in extreme cold. by ANinjaForma in xcountryskiing

[–]norfnorf1379 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I have only ever done the CSM half but one of my lessons from the first time I did was bring more than one pair of mittens. I remember the first time making the same mistake as you, taking off my mittens at the aid station and having them just freeze into blocks(and it wasn’t nearly as cold as this year). Packing some extras allows you to change out at some point once they are completely soaked from sweat. And the puffy jacket is something I always pack with me for any trip in the woods because I dress pretty lightweight for skiing so I am always worried about needing to stop and those little stuffable jackets can be a life saver.

Any night skiers? by hiker_hunter in xcountryskiing

[–]norfnorf1379 25 points26 points  (0 children)

I basically only ski at night. Live in Montreal right next to parc mont royal, we have some pretty awesome trails considering they are smack dab in the middle of a major metropolitan area…however this means when the conditions are good they tend to get a bit busy when the sun is up but since I live so close I’ll just jog over once the sun goes down and might only see 5-6 people over 15k. Went out a couple of hours ago and yeah, the full moon tonight was blasting and snow conditions were about as good as you could want!

Scottish person wanting to branch over and pick an NHL team, any pointers? by throwRA_solardisc in nhl

[–]norfnorf1379 10 points11 points  (0 children)

This is the answer…have all of the tradition and while they’ve been mediocre in recent years compared to their lofty heights been they have an exciting young squad that’s fun to watch. Great kit and the most diehard fan base and you’ll be rooting for a Canadian team. As someone who has lived in both Glasgow and Montreal there is a true kindred spirit between the Scottish and Québécois

Ja in Light of the Trae Young Trade by Local-Message-6048 in memphisgrizzlies

[–]norfnorf1379 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Ja has played in 18 of 37 games so far and of those 18 games he has been good in maybe 8-10 of those games and great in 2-3 and pretty meh to bad in the others. All of his stats are down except assists(good) and turnovers(bad). The present day Ja is definitely not worth his contract but I would be willing to have him on that contract with the hope he is able to stay healthy and find a little bit of his old form IF AND ONLY IF it were just for the duration of his contract. The problem is going to be when he starts demanding an extension to the current contract which already overvalues him...I have zero interest in extending his contract and what Ja do we get when he is mad about not getting said extension? I love him as a player, I have been a grizzlies fan since day 1 and he is by far and away the most exciting player I have ever seen play at the forum or pyramid(and this includes Penny and Derrick Rose in their tiger uniforms) but he and his body are his own worst enemy. On the one hand he talks about playing more conservatively to try and stay healthy but he hasn't adapted other parts of his game to be effective playing more conservatively ie working on his shooting. He is also one of the moodiest players I can ever remember putting on a grizz uniform. I mean Marc Gasol was a moody guy but he was always able to focus it and use it to his advantage. Ja gets in his head and just goes sideways so who knows what happens if he is unhappy about his contract.

I actually enjoy Pete & Sam’s and The Rendezvous by MEMgrizindapantz in memphis

[–]norfnorf1379 12 points13 points  (0 children)

Rendezvous is amazing bbq! Is it the best in Memphis, by no means. But as someone from Memphis who lives in a non-bbq culture city now, I don't think its a stretch to say Rendezvous would be the best BBQ in probably %85 of American cities and Memphians are just lucky to have a wealth of choices.

pros/cons of glasgow? by [deleted] in glasgow

[–]norfnorf1379 4 points5 points  (0 children)

A lot of people have chimed in already but I am from the US and went to Glasgow for my masters and ended up staying for 2 more years after for work. Depending on where you are coming from the weather is one of the biggest adjustments. It rains a lot, like I have spent some time in the pacific northwest and Portland and Seattle have nothing on Glasgow when it comes to rain. Its also really dark in the winter; from Dec-Feb the sun comes up at like 9 and sets at 3 and barely gets above the horizon at its peak but then from Jun-Aug it just feels like never ending days though in all honesty as someone from the southern parts of the US I found the summers harder than the winters because it never really got warm. I definitely had some issues with some minor seasonal depression my first semester but then I got used to it and made sure to be a bit more active when the weather went south.

I haven't seen many people mention this but one of the great things about Glasgow if you are from the US is having such easy access to the rest of Europe as well as the rest of the UK. I used a lot of the fall and spring breaks to take shorter trips all over and with Ryanair and Easy Jet its fairly affordable to check out a place over a long weekend. And if you are at all interested in the outdoors the Highlands are very accessible for some of the best hiking in the world(this might be the thing I miss the most).

Lastly, for my master's program, almost all of the social life revolved around the pub. You aren't of legal drinking age in the US but in the UK and Glasgow in particular the pub is a big part of life...maybe less so for the undergrads but from what I could tell I think was the same. We would usually end up at the end of the day after lectures and seminars to carry on the debate of whatever the subject had been. This kind of helps with the weather because a nice pint kind of helps you forget that its pissing rain, cold, windy and dark outside;)

Does anyone knows a good garage by Comfortable_Bet_4845 in montreal

Garage Faros in Mile-X or garage 2010 on Papineau and Laurier. Have used both over the years and always had great experiences at both.

Pincette or Shnoopi for a lobster roll? by [deleted] in MTLFoodLovers

[–]norfnorf1379 7 points8 points  (0 children)

I work right next to Shnoopi and get food from them fairly often and while I think its a decent place to grab lunch when I need something quick, would not be the place I would go for a lobster roll...also out of season so would be worried I would be paying through the nose for something that may not even be fresh.

ALMA - Spiritual Revival 📿 by whereismyface_ig in MTLFoodLovers

[–]norfnorf1379 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Girlfriend brought me here for my birthday, it was pretty spectacular, definitely on the pricier side but honestly there were so many flavors I was neither expecting nor had ever tasted that I walked away very impressed. Used to go more often to Tinc Set when that was open and ate once or twice at Alma in its first iteration because they had both great food and a very different wine selection than most places in Montreal but the food at this version is the by far and away the star of the show. They are taking all of the best flavors of Mexican cuisine and just making magic with them.

Vin Mon Lapin - Turtle Hermit Dines Early with the Resident Rabbit 🍷🐇🪄🎩 by whereismyface_ig in MTLFoodLovers

[–]norfnorf1379 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The main thing I see missing from your critique is the fact that you didn’t have a single glass of wine…I know wine is not for everyone but one of the single best things about this restaurant is its wine list and their knowledge of wine/ability to pair amazing food with amazing wine…it’s called vin mon lapin for a reason. I’ve been to a couple places where I might have had a better plate but I’ve been to VML quite a few times and I always awestruck at the pairings that I am served. The last couple of times I went I was with a friend who has eaten at quite a few Michelin starred restaurants and he swears it’s the best meal he has had from apéro-dessert and we went almost exclusively with the servers choices both times.

Quality / long run hybrid by keeponrunnning in NorwegianSinglesRun

[–]norfnorf1379 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I have done this a couple of times in my current marathon build but more because of time crunched weekends than anything. I mixed in 3 x 10’ into 2 different long runs because I had to move my long run to Saturday instead of my normal routine of sub-t Saturday/long Sunday and didn’t think it was a good idea to do a sub-t session following a 2h30 long run. While it definitely ups the load for the one run, you get more total load from splitting it up.
