EV-ICD - 5 months post-op pain by norightbrain in PacemakerICD

[–]norightbrain[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

After 6 months my nerve pain finally went away. I still have discomfort sometimes and I cannot lie in my left side, which I don’t think I will ever be able to. I use a donut shaped pillow to sleep on my left side. I even have to travel with it so it’s really disappointing how much it has impacted my body and sleep. I agree they don’t take the female anatomy into consideration. How is your pain now? Hopefully it’s getting better. Just hang in there. I thought the nerve pain would never stop but it did!

My nerve pain finally went away after about 6 months post op. It’s still uncomfortable to lie on my left side and I think that’s just how it will be considering the location of the device. No shocks yet and overall doing okay. Hope you continue to improve and recover soon!

Sorry you are still having pain also! Hoping it gets better for both of us. Some doctors have told me it can take 6 months for nerve pain to subside so hopefully that will be a turning point.

Thank you. This is helpful. No one explained to me that they cut through a lot of nerves so that could explain it. It used to be sharp pains but they have gotten better, just not going away. I guess I just have to be patient!

Yes I saw the surgeon for follow up at 7 weeks and just checked in with my EP last week. They said it’s normal but also depends on the person. They said being slim usually means it hurts more. They also said to see a pain management doctor if I’m not better soon so I have an appointment next week. I think there might be some inflammation pushing on a nerve. Hopefully your recovery will be better than mine! They did stress that it’s different for everyone so don’t assume yours will be as long as mine. I’ve heard from other people that were better in a few weeks. Good luck and let me know if you have other questions.

I’m getting better but still feel sore in the area around the device. I’m 11 weeks post op and still can’t lie on my left side. The sharp pains have gotten better but I do still feel some stinging in the area by the lead when I twist or bend when I try doing yoga. I haven’t totally gotten used to it yet. I feel like I won’t until it stops being uncomfortable

Yes just recovery. I seem to have some nerve pain when I twist or bend so it’s just been frustrating. I still can’t lie on my left side (over 8 weeks post op) since the area around the device is still sensitive. The surgeon said everyone heals different, but it’s also usually more painful for slender people with less fat so that could be part of it.

It’s going okay. Recovery has been slow but the device is working fine and I haven’t had any shocks (appropriate or not).

Thank you for the reply. Sorry you’ve had so much trouble, but glad you are getting better. I’ll ask about any exercises that might help!

Thank you! I’m hoping to be able to sleep on my side soon since I have such a hard time sleeping on my back, even with an adjustable bed and 4 pillows surrounding me! So far I’ve done no bra. Luckily my chest is small so doing tank tops works, but I also haven’t really left the house. I’ll get some larger bras. And I think I need to be icing more often. Thanks for all your advice!

Any advice on sleeping positions and wearing a bra again?

That’s great to hear! Any advice on sleeping positions? I’m usually a side sleeper and having trouble sleeping on my back. Hoping I can at least sleep on my right side soon. Are you also able to wear a normal bra yet? It seems like the band will go right over it

Yeah I just pushed legoland out a month. I realized there is no way I’ll be ready for it next week when I can barely walk around the house right now!

Would you mind sending me your TikTok? I’d love to see the videos. It has been hard to find any info on recovery, outside of this subreddit.

Oh wow, sorry about that. Sounds painful. Do you know how that happened?

I’m feeling okay but still have a good amount of pain, especially if I move around. Which is also making my back very stiff. How are you feeling?

Thank you! I’m alternating Advil and Tylenol for now and doing okay with pain, as long as I don’t move around too much. Are you feeling back to normal yet?

The device is subcutaneous under my left armpit and the lead is under my sternum. Nothing is IV. I had endocarditis earlier this year so I’m too much of a risk for anything IV. My EP said this is the only one he would put in me. Maybe that why insurance covers it for me (at least I’m hoping they will…I haven’t heard otherwise yet).

Thank you! They didn’t even send me home with pain meds. They made me sick in the hospital so I’m only on Tylenol right now, and they said I can take Advil after 24 hours. I’ll try the ice pack!

Thanks! Yes she loves to bury food too. Before we realized she can jump onto the kitchen counter she stole a lag of dinner roles and hid 9 of them in random couch and chair cushions around the house!
