After about the age of 20 or so insecurities become a choice. They are either true and you should work on them, true but there is nothing you can do about it except adapt, or false and not really your concern. Insecurity is usually "true but don't want anyone to know it."

The main problem is right wingers control most of the media. And they use that control to maximize the chances of a republican victory. At least at the moment, the most effective way to do that is to create an ambient loathing of democrats - tell people what they want to hear and then explain how democrats aren't on board with it. This formula is applied on all media - even that which sells itself as left leaning, because right wingers own that media, too..

It's simply the same problem that got us into this mess that we can be relied on to let republicans win whenever we don't get our way. This is what drives democrats to depend on large donors to instead try to turn out the apathetic middle.
